Mortality, lifestyle and socio-economic status
This paper uses the British Health and Lifestyle Survey (1984-1985) data and the longitudinal follow-up of May 2003 to investigate the de- terminants of premature mortality risk in Great Britain. A behavioral model, which relates premature mortality to a set of observable and unobservable factors, is considered. We focus on unobservable indi- vidual heterogeneity and endogeneity a®ecting the mortality equation. A MSL approach for a multivariate probit (MVP) is used to estimate a recursive system of equations for deaths and lifestyles. This model is then compared with the univariate probit models that include or exclude lifestyles. In order to detect inequality in the distribution of health within the population and to calculate the contribution of socio- economic factors, we compare the range measure of health inequality to the Gini coe±cient for overall health inequality. A Gini decomposi- tion analysis for predicted premature mortality shows that endogenous lifestyles and unobservable heterogeneity strongly contribute to inequal- ity in mortality, reducing the role of socio-economic statu

How to measure the unobservable: a panel technique for the analysis of TFP convergence
This paper proposes a fixed-effect panel methodology that enables us to simultaneously take into account both TFP convergence and the traditional neoclassical-type of convergence. We analyse a sample of Italian regions between 1963 and 1993 and find strong evidence that both mechanisms were at work during the process of aggregate regional convergence observed in Italy up to the mid-seventies. Finally, we find that our TFP estimates are highly positively correlated with standard human capital measures, where the latter is not statistically significant in growth regressions. This evidence confirms one of the hypothesis of the Nelson and Phelps approach, namely that human capital is the main determinant of technological catch-up. Our results are robust to the use of different estimation procedures such as simple LSDV, Kiviet-corrected LSDV, and GMM à la Arellano and Bond
Frequentazione e selezione dell'habitat della volpe in un'area boschiva della Sardegna meridionale
The aim of this paper is to provide the first results about habitat use and frequentation of fox in the south-west Sardinia. The method consists of using the excrements like distinguishing marks. Collected data show that foxes prefer the high maquis and riparian vegetation and avoid the low maquis and the garrigue. The frequentation index confirms data obtained by habitat analysis
A contribution to the knowledge of the order Quercetalia ilicis Br.-Bl. ex Molinier 1934 of Sardinia
A syntaxonomic revision of the holm-oak and cork-oak woods of Sardinia is here presented. The geological and phytoclimatic heterogeneity of the
island and the wide ecological amplitude of the holm-oak, result in a large phytocoenotic diversity of the Sardinian holm-oak woods. These are
referred to five associations: Pyro amygdaliformis-Quercetum ilicis, Prasio majoris-Quercetum ilicis ass. nova, Galio scabri-Quercetum ilicis, Saniculo
europaeae-Quercetum ilicis ass. nova and Aceri monspessulani-Quercetum ilicis. From the phytogeographic point of view, in the subhumid-humid,
meso-supramediterranean bioclimatic belts of Sardinia the presence of the association Galio scabri-Quercetum ilicis is found to be remarkable.
As far as the cork-oak woods are concerned, the associations Galio scabri-Quercetum suberis and Violo dehnhardtii-Quercetum suberis ass. nova are
here reported.
The Sardinian-Corsican holm-oak and cork-oak woods define the western limit of the European central-Mediterranean alliance Fraxino orni-Quercion
ilicis of which in Sardinia there are many characteristic and differential entities. In the Sardinian-Corsican holm-oak woods, however, there are
endemic entities (Arum pictum ssp. pictum, Helleborus lividus ssp. corsicus, Digitalis purpurea var. gyspergerae, Quercus ichnusae and Paeonia
morisii) and other western-centred entities with little or no spread on the Italian peninsula (Galium scabrum, Clematis cirrhosa and Teucrium
scorodonia). These entities allow the proposal that within the alliance Fraxino orni-Quercion ilicis can be recognised the new Sardinian-Corsican
suballiance Clematido cirrhosae-Quercenion ilicis (typus: Prasio majoris-Quercetum ilicis ass. nova), which is endemic to the Sardinian and Corsican
sectors of the Italo-Tyrrhenian Province. Consequently, the suballiance Fraxino orni-Quercenion ilicis, which is the typical of the alliance Fraxino
orni-Quercion ilicis, has also been proposed
Studio fitosociologico delle cenosi a Carex microcarpa Bertol. ex Moris della Sardegna meridionale
Phytosociological study on Carex microcarpa Bertol. ex Moris communities in southern Sardinia (Italy). Results of a phytosociological study on
Carex microcarpa Bertol. ex Moris communities in southern Sardinia (Italy), are herein presented. For the vegetation analysis ten phytosociological
relevés, five soil profiles and a bioclimatic analysis on thermopluviometric stations present in Sulcis-Iglesiente and Sarrabus-Gerrei regions, were
carried out. All data were elaborated and subsequently submitted to multivariate statistical analysis. This permitted to recognize two principal groups
that correspond with to two different subassociations which are vicarious in relation to the substrate and its physical chemistry features. All relevés
are referable to the Hyperico hircini-Caricetum microcarpae ass. nova. In particular those of the former group belong to the typical subassociation
oenanthetosum crocatae subass. nova. and those of the second one to adiantetosum capilli-veneris subass. nova. The typical subassociation develops
on deep, very rich in humus, from subalkaline to neutral and with limited slope soils. The adiantetosum capilli-veneris subassociation develops on
very wet substrate, it is characteristic of dripping rocks and spring areas. The communities are syntaxonomically related to the Sardo-Corsican
endemic alliance Caricion microcarpae
ICT and local development: a case study of the metropolitan area of Cagliari
This paper provides a broad description of the local infrastructure and economy in the Cagliari area, with a special focus on the sector of information and communication technology. It argues that, while the ICT sector has become in time a significant industrial reality in the Cagliari area, it has not reached the dimensions and status of a veritable technology district, and the drive for innovation and corporate success appears to have lost its momentum
Wage dispersion and equilibrium search models: some evidence from Italy
This paper provides a structural estimation of an equilibrium search model with on-thejob search and heterogeneity in firms' productivities using a sample of Italian workers. Allowing for productivity differentials among firms, the model is able to fit the wage distribution satisfactorily. Results indicate that arrival rates of offers for workers are higher when unemployed than when employed and firms exploit their monopsnony power when setting wages. As a result, workers earn far less than their marginal product. The paper also provides an estimate of the underlying distribution of productivity across firms. Geographical stratification reveals also interesting differences in transition parameters across workers
