Studies on the role of cholesterol in the pathogenesis of prion diseases: I. Correlation between cell susceptibility to prion infection/replication and altered cellular cholesterol distribution

    Get PDF
The aim of the research project was to investigate whether cell susceptibility to prion infection/replication was somehow related to alterations in the intracellular cholesterol homeostasis, and in particular whether unbalanced FC vs. CE pools could be found in prion infected/prion susceptible cells with respect to cell conditions of no infection or genetic resistance

The adoption of a Comprehensive Income Statement in Italy: has the time of a new disclosure come?

    No full text
Nowadays financial and economic performances achieved in the period and their projections in the future are of particular relevance to all users of financial statements. Although they utilize and search for different financial information, all of them require comprehensive, appropriate, timeliness, relevance and reliable information. This study examines the lack of information provided by current Italian and European forms of Income Statement as fundamental instrument for financial and economic disclosure and how this information could not be useful to users in making their economic decisions, especially now that IFRSs will be adopted for preparing separate and only financial statements of Italian non-financial listed companies. If until now, Italian and European GAAP have preferred accounting principles to determine distributable incomes, IFRSs’ adoption will move our care in determining comprehensive performances and companies’ assets and liabilities expressed at current value. In such cases a new form of Income Statement is required. In this study a proposal of Comprehensive Income Statement is given. It considers the different Italian concepts of realization, prudence and restrictions on fair value gains distributability, as well as the new IFRSs’ accounting measurements required by their adoption. Such Statement fosters the quality of information to investors for their economic decision-making, taking into account the law requirements concerning capital maintenance

Aspetti e problemi dell'appartenenza dei soggetti umani all'impresa

    Get PDF

Montevecchio (SW-Sardinia) are presented. The statistic analysis of the relevés let to recognize 14 plant communities. The hygrophilous communities have been ascribed to the class Phragmito-Magnocaricetea, the hemicryptophytic mesohygrophilous ones to Juncetea maritimi, the therophytic to Tuberarietea guttatae and the hemicryptophytic mesoxerophilous to Lygeo-Stipetea. The most interesting vegetation types turned out to be the chamaephytic and nanophanerophytic ones, both kinds are belonging to sardo-corsican endemic alliances: Ptilostemono casabonae-Euphorbion cupanii and Teucrion mari, respectively. The first alliance comprises pebble vegetation with distinctive ecological preferences, as they are able to colonize substrata polluted by heavy metal, with low pH values. Within this alliance, 4 new associations have been recognized: Scrophularietum bicoloris, Dactylo hispanicae-Helichrysetum tyrrhenici, Mercurialido corsicae-Euphorbietum cupanii and Dauco maritimi-Dittrichietum viscosae, the latter with two subassociations (typicum and rumicetosum glaucescentis). As to the Teucrion mari, 1 new association and 1 subassociation have been described (Helichryso tyrrhenici-Genistetum sulcitanae and Stachydi glutinosae-Genistetum corsicae euphorbietosum cupanii), found on aged mining dumps, where the long abandonment made possible the beginning of the pedogenetic processes. The present study let to reconstruct the vegetation dynamics, that in the mining areas are clearly differing from the surrounding territory. It was possible to identify two special series, strictly related to these habitats and verging to the establishment of plant communities pertaining to the climatophilous series: the first is developing on coarse, hard-sloping debris, with very low water retention; the second is developing on fine-grained and coherent materials, found on flattened or gently-sloping sites, with high edaphic humidity. In wetlands, it was also possible to identify an edaphohygrophilous series and a geoseries of endoreic water bodies, not exclusive of the mining habitats

The first results of the project "Plant Biodiversity Conservation in the Protected Marine Area of Capo Carbonara (PMA)" are illustrated. This initiative, promoted by the CCB and the Municipality of Villasimius (CA), was funded for three-year period (2005/07) by the Ministry of the Environment and Territory protection. The project provides the study, monitoring and conservation of the coastal habitat, principally on all the Sites of Communitary Importance (pSIC) of the Villasimius Municipality territory, in order to plan a harmonic development between coastal and sea areas unifying the environmental protection secured by the PMA with that relatives to the Natura 2000 network. During the first year there were started ecological, floristic-sociological and chorological studies, in order to value the actual state of conservation and have a possibility to propose adequate measures for a sustainable management. In order to guarantee the effective plant biodiversity conservation, the following ex situ actions have been made: collection, study and conservation for a long time of the seed of selected species in the structures of the Sardinian Seed Bank (BG-SAR), according to international procedures and protocols. At the end of the first year the seed harvest was completed relatively to all the species with a greater risk of extinction. The project provides also actions directed to sensitize the population, local and non, on the thematics of the conservation and the sustainable development of the territory

La flora del Monte Arcuentu (Sardegna sud occidentale)

    Get PDF
The results of an anaytical survey of the flora of Monte Arcuentu, a volcanic massif in SW Sardinia, are reported. The survey resulted in 556 recorded taxa, belonging to 335 genus, 84 families and 39 orders. The most represented Phylum is Magnoliophyta (539 taxa), of which the Eudicots represent the richest systematic group, with 22 orders, 54 families and 405 species. The most represented orders are: Asterales (74 taxa), Lamiales (59), Fabales (53) and Caryophyllales (30). Most of the recored taxa were belonging to Asteraceae (71), followed by Fabaceae (52) and Poaceae (51). Most frequent genera are: Trifolium (11), Euphorbia (9), Allium, Geranium, Juncus, Medicago, Ophrys, Orobanche (7). The biological spectrum highlights the remarkable Mediterranean connotation of the studied district, being the therophytes (40.8%), followed by hemicriptophytes (27.0%) and geophytes (14.7%) being the most frequent growth forms. Indeed, the chorologic spectrum is dominated by the Mediterranean chorotype (48.4%), whose main partitions are: steno-Mediterranean (22.8%), endemic (9.7%) and W-Medit. (9.3%). Taxa with a broader distribution range, but centred in the Mediterranean basin, represent the 26.6%. The endemic taxa were 54 , among which Asteraceae (8) and Fabaceae (5) were the most represented families. The chorologic spectrum of the endemic units is dominated by Sardo-Corsican taxa (20), followed by Italo-Tyrrhenian ones (14). The analysis of rarity, according to the categories of Rabinowitz, highlighted the fact that the largest group (231) consists of WBL (i.e. species diffused over the territory, with a wide ecology and a large local population, in some places dominant), while the smallest one (5) is formed by the NBL (i.e. species with a limited spread over the territory, a wide ecology and a large local population, at times dominant). The taxa protected by international regulations are all the recorded orchids (19) and Cyclamen repandum subsp. repandum, included in the attached II of CITES, Brassica insularis in the Berne Convention, 2 in the Habitat Directive (Brassica insularis and Ruscus aculeatus), plus 3 (Soleirolia soleirolii, Hyoseris taurina and Genista morisii) cited in the IUCN- red lists

Uno specchio frammentario. La soggettività umana in H. G. Gadamer tra determinazione storica e responsabilità al singolare

    Get PDF
The research aims to analyse the terms in which Hans Georg Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics considered the idea of human subjectivity. The way that has been developed at first took up again the fundamental gadamerian text, Truth and Method, finding in it the lines of an overcoming the subjectivity and of its heterodetermination by the historical and sociocultural context in the first place. The principal and more characteristic concepts of the gadamerian thought (play, prejudice, the consciousness of historical determination, the history of effects, and so on), have been treated again, just according to the peculiar key of interpretation of the subjectivity. Special attention has been given to the language, since through it an accurate diachronic analysis was possible about this theme in the author’s writing. Subsequently to this founding part we have outlined the subject of a social reason, understood as a collective concrete matter which inserts itself in the social dialogue and the culture and then becomes a heritage of contents and ideas that are a background for every individual reflection and action. In a third section the presence of some elements in Gadamer’s hermeneutics has been detected, especially through the examination of a series of short essays written in his “second philosophical youth”, which can be traced back to a conception of liberty of the subjectivity of man, glimmers that express themselves mainly in the moment of decision, with its solitude, and are synthesized in the extreme formula of a responsibility which, though raised on a base of communitarian ethos, continues to be an irrevocable principle of singularity

Lagrangian acceleration measurements via PTVA (Particle Tracking Velocimetry and Accelerometry) on a turbulent-like flow

    Get PDF
Quasi-two-dimensional turbulence (Q2D) has both a practical and theoretical relevance. Following the topological approach, turbulent-like flows have the aim to model and study some of the aspects of turbulence. With this target, in the laboratory of the Imperial College London, Q2D electromagnetically-controlled multiple-scale flows are experimentally studied. To study those flows, an accurate Lagrangian technique to measure acceleration is needed: a novel technique, Particle Tracking Velocimetry and Accelerometry (PTVA), based on Image Analysis techniques, has been designed, developed and validated. PTVA is a self-adaptive methods which relies on a number of positions to approximate the trajectories that adapts to the topology and acceleration of the flow and grants much more precise measurements compared to previous methods. PTVA has allowed to experimentally measure all the Navier-Stokes equation’s terms over the entire investigation field, to classify zero acceleration points, to extract the map of power input and output along with the one of the divergence of acceleration (stirring intensity), measured for the first time, obtaining the tools to work on mixing efficiency. The pdf of the acceleration components has turned out to be very similar to the one usually measured in real turbulence: as this pdf has been often considered as the signature of turbulence, this result makes the question of which characteristics of turbulence generate which features arise

The purpose of this work is to analyze a model for the management and development of categories of environmental data, using some decision support systems such as the Geographic Information Systems (GIS), applied to the fuzzy analysis. As a "case study", the research was focused on the analysis of noise data and on the geographical context of the Province of Cagliari. During the research project, all the geographical themes and the socio-economic and noise data, once stored, processed and structured, were put into many databases, related to each other by logical, geographical and topological links and rules. All the databases, dialoguing among themselves and with the GIS, create the Noise Decision Support System: a model that improves the analysis effectiveness, increasing the number of the verifiable alternatives and providing assistance to the “acoustics landscape planning”. One of the results of the work was to create a sort of "provincial acoustics zoning", identifying where some possible "critical areas" are located in the region
