    Angiogenesis is the formation of blood vessels from preexisting vessels and it related to cancer growth. Cancer growth required new support for nutrients and oxygen, which is provided by new vessel resulted from angiogenesis. The release of tumor angiogenic factor (TAF), such as basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), is the key factor for new vessel formation and further cancer development. The compounds that are able to inhibit angiogenesis is a potential  therapeutic agent for cancer treatment. Some of well known antiangiogenic compounds are flavonoids, saponins, and tannins. It is already known that seed extract of jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus) contain some amount of that compounds. This study used ex ovo culture of chicken chorioallantoic membrane (CAM), which has advantage compare to other method in term of easy visualization of blood vessel formation. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of jackfruit seed methanolic extract effective concentration on angiogenesis inhibition. The research methods were jackfruit seeds metanolic extraction, ex ovo culture, antiangiogenic assay, and macroscopic observation on CAM blood vessel formation. The results showed that jackfruit seeds could inhibit bFGF-induced angiogenesis in ex ovo CAM at concentration of 35 µg/mL with inhibition of 61,14±15,73% through macroscopic observation

    Konsentrasi Logam Berat (Pb dan Cd) pada Bagian Tumbuhan Akuatik Acanthus ilicifolius (Jeruju)

    Perkembangan pembangunan menyebabkan aktivitas manusia di berbagai sektor kehidupan. Kegiatan ini seringkali menghasilkan bahan pencemar yang berdampak terhadap lingkungan. Salah satu pencemaran yang serius adalah logam berat, karena bila terserap dan terakumulasi dalam tubuh manusia dapat mengganggu kesehatan dan menyebabkan kematian. Logam berat seperti Pb (timbal) dan Cd (kadmium) bersifat toksik dan merupakan pencemar di semua media lingkungan. Konsep yang melihat peran tumbuhan sebagai teknologi alami dalam ekosistem guna mengatasi permasalahan lingkungan dikenal dengan istilah Fitoteknologi. Jenis Acanthus ilicifolius (Jeruju) dipilih karena banyak dijumpai dialam pada muara sungai yang kondisi saat ini dimungkinkan tercemar oleh logam berat dari aktivitas industri dan sebagainya. Pendekatan fitoteknologi ini yang digunakan dalam penelitian. Penelitian bertujuan mengetahui kemampuan tumbuhan akuatik Acanthus ilicifolius terhadap paparan logam berat Pb dan Cd, serta konsentrasi yang terdapat pada bagian tumbuhan sebagai metode dalam fitoforensik. Penelitian dilakukan di Teknik Lingkungan ITS selama November 2013 s/d Desember 2014. Parameter yang diamati berupa kandungan logam berat pada media tumbuhan (pasir dan air) serta bagian tumbuhan (akar, batang dan daun), dengan variasi jumlah tiga dan lima individu. Percobaan dilakukan di greenhouse TL-ITS dengan konsentrasi paparan Pb 10.000 ppm dan Cd 400 ppm, kemudian analisis kandungan logam Pb dan Cd di laboratorium LPPM-ITS mengunakan AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer). Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa Acanthus ilicifolius termasuk tumbuhan akumulator dengan nilai translokasi faktor 1,01 Konsentrasi logam Pb yang ditemukan pada hari ke 15 pemaparan di akar 8.958 ppm, batang 41 ppm dan daun 22 ppm. Sedangkan konsentrasi logam Cd yang ditemukan pada akar 237 ppm, batang 2 ppm dan daun 1 ppm. Sehingga fitoforensik untuk logam Pb dan Cd pada tumbuhan jeruju terletak di akar

    In Indonesia, belimbing wuluh (Averrhoa bilimbi L.) has been used for traditional medicine, especially to heal stiff, mumps, rheumatism, ulcers, acne, tinea versicolor, high blood pressure, and dental pain and cough. This property is predicted comes from its secondary metabolites. Saponin is a compound group of secondary metabolites which is known to have antitussives and expectorants effect, antiinflammatory, antibacterial, and cytotoxic activity for cancer therapy. However, scientific information about the location for saponin accumulation in this plant is still limited. This information is needed for the use of saponin from A. bilimbi for herbal medicines development. The aim of this study was to know the content of saponin in fruits, leaves, and petioles of A. bilimbi. This work was initiated with sampling and preparation of samples, followed by the preliminary tests, including froth test and color test to show the saponin content qualitatively. Saponin was extracted and isolated by maseration using methanol solvent, and by thin layer chromatography (TLC) preparative, respectively. Saponin content was measured by spectrophotometer UV-Vis at 280 nm. Result shows that the highest saponin content, according to the absorbance value, is in the fruit organ. In A. bilimbi, saponin could be accumulated in the generative organ, although saponin synthesis is located in leaves. Based on the production of brown ring with Liebermann Burchard (LB) reagent test, it is suggested that triterpen saponin is the dominant saponin presents in A. bilimbi. Saponin content in A. bilimbi fruits is higher than saponin content in Musa paradisiaca var. sapientum L. stems. Therefore, triterpen saponin from A. bilimbi fruits is promising to be developed as commercial herbal medicines

    This research aims to know the effect of Project Based Learning (PjBL) based on macroalgae potency of seashore toward students critical thinking skills. This research was held at SMAN 1 Tanjungsari in academic year 2013/2014. All student of grade X MIA had been chosen as a research population. Randomly, two classes were selected representing the experimental class (implementation PjBL based on macroalgae potency of seashore) and the control class. A quasi-experimental method was designed to achieve the research objectives. Data were collected during one month or four meetings consist two hours (45 min each). Critical thinking was measured through essay test which were formulated based on cognitive scale of Bloom taxonomy (C4–C6). All the data were analyzed using t-test method with α=5%. Observation of learning process was also done to get information on critical thinking process. The result showed that implementation of PjBL based on localities influenced significantly on students’ critical thinking skills

    Bacteria are ubiquotus and could grow in various environments, including those associated with marine organisms such as algae, sponge, sea grass and soft corals. For these organisms, bacteria help building their active defense mechanisms by producing secondary metabolites such as antibacterial compounds. This research aimed to study the potency of seaweed-associated bacteia in producing antibacterial compounds. The seaweed used were Halimeda macroloba, Caulerpa racemosa dan Ulva sp. The results of isolation found five bacteria: one from H. macroloba, three from C. racemosa, and one from Ulva sp. Antibacterial assays was done by measuring inhibition zone to the growth of three bacteria: Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, dan Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Bacteria Isolated from H. macroloba showed the highest inhibition zone towards P. aeruginosa of 18.1 mm. Using molecular 16S rRNA identification, this isolate showed similarity to Idiomarina fontislapidosi strain HME8844. Biochemical tests showed that this isolate   was negative to ferment the sugar of arabinose, fructose and sucrose, and also negative to amylum hidrolysis

    The study on chlorophyll concentration of yellow ginger leaf with different area of development has not been conducted thoroughly. Yellow ginger leaf is one of the body plant organ which contains a mountain of fibers which is one of many benefits of this plant. This study aimed to compare the chlorophyll concentration of yellow ginger leaf with different area of development. After extracting leaf chlorophyll using etanol 96%, chlorophyll concentration was measured using spectrometer on λ 649 and 665 nm. The result showed that the chlorophyll concentration was different among the leaves with different area of development, exactly in the base of leaf contains the most of chlorophyll

    Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk memberikan bekal pengetahuan mengenai aneka umbi yang bias digunakan sebagai tepung alternatif  pengganti tepung terigu.  Makin tingginya harga   tepung terigu dan makin meningkatnya jumlah penderita autis membuat produk pangan olahan berbahan dasar non terigu semakin diminati.  Salah satu pemicu faktor hiperaktif pada penderita autis antara lain adalah penggunaan bahan makanan yang mengandung gluten dan kasein.  Asupan nutrisi gluten free-casein free sangat diperlukan sebagai salah satu bentuk terapi makanan bagi penderita autis.  Beberapa sumber umbi-umbian yang bisa digunakan sebagai bahan baku olahan gluten free-casein free antara lain adalah kentang, ubi ungu, talas,  ketela pohon dan ubi jalar.  Umbi-umbian ini banyak tersedia di berbagai wilayah Indonesia dengan harga yang murah sehingga mempunyai peluang sebagai tepung substitusi terigu   yang potensial

    Analisis penghambatan aktivitas mortalin dengan senyawa herbal Indonesia untuk skrening anti kanker melalui in silico

    The prevalence of cancer in Indonesia is still very high, especially breast and cervical cancer. However, the potent and safe drugs for cancer therapy are still not available. One strategy to find the safe cancer drug is screening active compound that able to block the function of mortalin protein. In cancer cells, mortalin inhibits p53 protein to enter the nucleus, which inhibit p53 function to stimulate apoptosis and cell cycle  arrest in cancer cells. In this study, mortalin is used as target protein to screen of active compounds from Indonesia plants. The active compounds were analysed its binding affinity to p53-binding domains of mortalin, compared to withanone as a positive control. The result suggested that four compounds, there are Hesperidin, Artoindonesianin A, glycyrrhetinic acid, and Liriodenine have better binding affinity to mortalin compared to withanone. These compounds can be isolated from Citrus aurantium, Artocarpus reticulatus, Glycyrrhiza glabra and Michelia champaca, respectively.     Lubuk Larangan merupakan salah satu nilai kearifan tradisional yang masih tetap dipertahankan. Pengambilan ikan dalam Lubuk Larangan mempunyai Ketentuan Adat dan Desa. Pengambilannya dilakukan dalam satu tahun sekali  dan hasilnya dari Lubuk Larangan dipergunakan untuk kepentingan pembangunan desa dan mesjid. Bentuk kearifan lain yang diatur oleh adat dan desa adalah adanya larangan pengambilan ikan di sungai dengan mengunakan pukat panjang, tuba, racun, sentrum, dan bahan-bahan kimia lainnya serta menggunakan lebih dari satu lampu (petromak).  Latar belakangnya adalah jumlah ikan yang diambil oleh seseorang akan melebihi dari  kebutuhan konsumsi rumah tangga (hasil tangkapan besar). Pengambilan buah durian sebelum masak/jatuh dalam jumlah besar juga tidak diperbolehkan dalam peraturan adat dan desa. Semua ini bertujuan untuk menjaga ketersediaan sumber daya alam serta memenuhi kebutuhan anggota masyarakat dalam jangka panjang. Gambaran tersebut adalah merupakan konservasi lingkungan yang berasakan kearifan lokal, secara teoritis hal ini apa yang disebut sebagai Integreted Community Development Conservation. Lubuk larangan adalah sseusatu yang unik dan khas yang tidak dijumpai di tempat-tempat lainya selain di Jambi. Oleh karena alasan tersebut di atas, maka tujuan dari penelitian yang akan dilaksanakan adalah:(1) Memetakan persebaran keruangan dan pola keruangan lubuk larangan di Kabupaten Bungo, Jambi; (2). Menganalisis proses keruangan yang terjadi sebelum, selama dan setelah terbentuknya Lubuk Larangan: (3) Mengetahui sejauh mana peran masyarakat dalam konservasi lingkungan di sekitar lubuk larangan; (4) Mengetahu sejauh mana Integreted Community Development dapat berjalan dalam masyarakat di sekitar lubuk larangan. Penelitian ini akan dilaksanakan di Kabupaten Bungo, Jambi, dengan mengambil sampel penelitian di Desa Lubuk Beringin di Kecamatan Bathin III  Ulu, Kabupaten Bungo, Jambi. Penelitian akan menggunakan metode survey sebelum pra survey akan disiapkan peta tentative tentang persebaran Lubuk Larangan dengan menggunakan source dari Citra Satelit. FGD juga dilaksanakan guna menjaring data tentang pranata-pranata social dalam menyiapkan lubuk larangan, serta hal-hal yang selama ini menjadi kendala dalam pelaksanaannya.
