    Urgensi Filsafat Dakwah dalam Meningkatkan Kompetensi Calon Praktisi Dakwah

    This paper seeks to explain the urgency of the philosophy of da'wah for developing students' understanding of da’wah science-related units in the Department of Islamic Communication and Broadcast, Faculty of Da'wah and Communication, State Islamic University of Sunan Ampel (UINSA) Surabaya. Applying a library and field research, this study has found that the da’wah philosophy unit has contributed to the increase of students' understanding about the scope and area of da'wah science. In addition, the unit of da'wah philosophy has provided philosophical methodology that is useful for examining the process of da'wah, including critical thinking, for those who are candidate of Islamic preachers (da’i), namely the students of Da’wah and Communication Faculty

    Indeks Literasi Digital Muslim Milenial di Indonesia

    This article reports on a quantitative explanatory research conducted with nationwide survey 1000 of millennial Muslim generations in five major cities in Indonesia regarding the digital literacy. The results have found that the level of millennial Muslim’s digital literacy in Indonesia is quite good. Although the majority learn the internet independently, they denote quick response in adapting to cyber culture. Unfortunately, the duration of internet access has remained high that is likely to open up opportunities for negative effects of the internet. In addition, this study argues that several generations of millennial Muslims unwittingly have contributed to spreading hoax because they mostly do not check or validate information to authoritative sources

    Komunikasi Interpersonal Komunitas Pelita dalam Membangun Toleransi Beragama

    This article discusses religious tolerance in the perspective of interpersonal communication. This research was conducted using descriptive qualitative methods through a phenomenological approach. The results showed that inter-personal communication patterns that occurred between members of the Pelita community in building religious tole-rance based on interpersonal competence, friendship asso-ciations, professional relationships, and websites for inter-personal relationships. While romantic communication pat-terns and family relationships did not appear. This is because Pelita was medium for people meeting from various religious backgrounds who were not tied based on genetic, but com-munication amongst members relying on the social and national based relationship

    Balancing Audience’s Needs and Producer’s Expectations in Television Serial Drama Programming

    The study sheds light on how the TV station executives balance the entertainment needs of its audience and the producers' expectations within a changing digital broadcast environment. The study is anchored on uses and gratification and the encoding and decoding theories. The research employs a mixed-method design by using survey questionnaires (415), FGDs, and in-depth interviews with 5 TV station executives and serial drama fiction producers in Kenya. The results indicate that the station executive takes centre stage to fulfil the urban audience’s needs and the producers’ needs respectively.     Exposure to Online Da'wah Messages among Young Social Media Users in Aceh: A Reflection of Habermas's Communicative Action

    This study aims to reveal the transformative power of social media platforms as a new form of public sphere for religious discourse amongst Acehnese Muslim students. Using a descriptive quantitative method through online survey with 129 of those students, this study shows that social media have contributed providing a new public sphere for young Muslim and have become an essential part of Islamic proselytising (da'wah). In this regard, most young social media users utilised social media to discuss Islamic da'wah as well as to express their thought concerning on shariah enforcement. Therefore, this study argues that social media use has a close relationship with the increase of religious thoughts and knowledge as the implementation of da'wah

    The presence of Islamic preachers in the current Indonesia has marked the awakening of the world of da’wah. However, this phenomenon also has raised people's criticisms concerning the competence and credibility of Muslim preachers (da'i). This article reports on a library research regarding the conceptual comparison of Islamic propagation (da'wah) and Aristotle's rhetoric with regard to the qualifications of da'i. The results of this study has indicated that the rhetoric of da'wah which primarily rooted from divine revelation has conceptual relevance to Aristotle's rhetoric; ethos, pathos and logos. In this regard, a da'i is not only required to have credibility with moral qualities, good intentions and goals.     This article discusses the verses of al-Qu’ran regarding the principles of da'wah social advocacy. Using the hermeneutic approach of JE Jorge Gracia, this research has revealed that da'wah for social advocacy is an important part of Islamic teachings. The principles and scope of Islamic social advocacy are summarized in the spirit of maqashid shariah (the science of ushul fiqh), namely the defense of the basic rights of society in the framework of safeguarding religion, thought, soul, descent and property. In addition, this study also has argued that da'wah acitivist for social advocacy purposes are required to have sensitivity with regard to the efforts to solve social problems as part of fulfilling people's basic rights.     Western media is considered to have an important role war in constructing a negative image of Islam throughout the world, especially after the 9/11 WTC attacks. It inspired the emergence of various popular cultural products, especially in several Muslim-populated countries, which carried out a counter-culture to this reality. This study discusses how the construction of Islam within Western media in the novel Bulan Terbelah Di Langit Amerika. This research used a qualitative method utilising a media text analysis approach. The results showed that the media played an important role in constructing the identity of Islam, as the world enemy, was a media marketing strategy to increase product circulation. This negative view of Islam may be due to the absence of comprehensive information about Islam

    The proliferation of Islamic-based media in the Indonesian post-reform era has made an important contribution in spreading Islamic information and proselytising on the one side, and generate socio-political conflict on the other side. This article reports on research conducted with 2 of those news coverage samples in the online media of VOA. Islam .com, using a quantitative descriptive of content analysis. Findings illustrated a poor implementation of da’wah journalism elements which adapted from common journalism principles such as honesty, fairness, impartiality, and accuracy of information. However, these Islamic-based online news sites indicated greater attention to implement da’wah journalism characteristics based on Islamic values regarding how information should be conveyed to audiences such as Qaulan Ma’rufan, Qaulan Kariman, Qaulan Masyuran, Qaulan Balighan, and Qaulan Layyinan

    Semiotic Analysis of Islamic Communication Message of Melengkan at Gayonese Culture in Central Aceh

    This study discusses the forms of the message and the principles of Islamic communication at Gayo ethnic culture in Central Aceh District. Using qualitative research with the semiotics analysis approach in analysing the text of the customary speech written by A.R. Hakim Aman Pinan, this research found that the form of messages contained in the custom of downcast is the form of informative messages namely messages spoken by pemelengkan only in the form of persuasive messages, namely pemelengkan give advice containing persuasion so that awareness arises in the communicant, and coercive messages, namely pemelengkan give orders to comply with customs and sanctions against these violations. Additionally, the principles of Islamic communication contained this culture are the principle of qaulan sadiddan, qaulan kariman, qaulan layyinan, qaulan maysuran, and qaulan ma’rufan. &nbsp
