Resilience: resources and strategies of SMEs in a new theoretical framework
No full textThe issue of the ability to survive and successfully compete in a turbulent business environment (i.e., resilience) is becoming more and more noteworthy within entrepreneurial, managerial and strategic studies (Pal et al., 2014; Linnenluecke, 2017). Although small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are defined the backbone of the economy in many countries (Cowling et al., 2015) these are less studied from the resilience angle. While there exists in literature a strong focal point around which definitions and theory buiding are constructed, there is a lack of empirically testing and demonstrating of such theories. There is little empirical evidence on how organisations, especially SMEs, may achieve degrees of resilience. Thus the purpose of this paper is to skim among all the key enablers that emerge from literature and identify strategic and managerial features that more likely could support SMEs to obtain

Human capital in the twenty first century
No full textThis paper reviews Thomas Piketty's treatment of human capital in Capital in the Twenty First Century. It first explores Piketty's reasons for excluding human capital from the analysis, and determines that the fact that human capital is not sold on a market is not a sufficient argument for exclusion. The "fundamental laws of capitalism" do not rely on the assumption that capital is exchanged on a market. The paper further argues that Goldin and Katz's (2008) work on education and income inequality is more compatible with Capital in the Twenty First Century than many critics suggest. The paper concludes by arguing that including human capital in the broader discussion of inequality should not detract from Piketty's broader findings
How assembly systems are adopting the technologies of I40: a preliminary landscape
No full textThe recent revolution connected to the manufacturing and assembly process digitalization, known as Industry 4.0 (I40), is radically changing the way these processes are conducted. Assembly systems are expected to benefit from positive effects, such as significant innovation and improvement in system flexibility, increase in process speed and efficiency, as well as the possibility of extremely customized products. Accordingly, interest in the exploitation of technological improvements introduced by I40 in the design and management of AS is increasing as well. The objective of this paper is to inspect the evolution of research on I40 applied to AS by means of the analysis of the literature on this topic. To achieve this objective, a traditional content-based literature review is combined with quantitative information extracted from bibliographic networks to detect emerging topics, and by revealing the dynamic evolution of the scientific production. This dynamic analysis allowed highlighting research directions and critical areas for the development of the 'assembly I40'. Moreover, the analysis offers insights on the technology improvements that have not been explored yet in order to allow a real transition towards the I40 transformation of AS.12-14 September 201
