    Length of stay reduction in the emergency department and its quantification using complex network theory

    Overcrowding in emergency department (ED) has become an increasingly significant problem worldwide. Different crowding measures have been proposed in the literature and, between them, the length of stay (LOS) is one of the most recognised. In this paper the LOS in the ED of a hospital located in the southern central region of Italy is calculated; than the ED process is represented as a network and, due to the identification of the bottleneck node, possibilities to reduce the LOS through changes to the actual process can be identified. The present work demonstrates that the LOS reductions obtained by process changes and measured by the analytical LOS calculations can be assessed also through the changes in the topological properties of the activities network, that are measured using complex network measures

    Clustering ranking data via copulas

    Clustering of ranking data aims at the identification of groups of subjects with a homogenous, common, preference behavior. Ranking data occurs when a number of subjects are asked to rank a list of objects according to their personal preference order. The input in cluster analysis is a distance matrix, whose elements measure the distances between rankings of two subjects. The choice of the distance dramatically affects the final result and therefore the computation of an appropriate distance matrix is an issue. Several distance measures have been proposed for ranking data. The most important are the Kendalls t, Spearmans r and Cayley distances. When the aim is to emphasize top ranks, weighted distances for ranking data should be used. We propose a generalization of this kind of distances using copulas. Those generalizations provide a more flexible instrument to model different types of data dependence structures and consider different situations in the classification process. Simulated and real data are used to illustrate the pertinence and the importance of our proposal.14-16 April 201

    Creating and capturing value from big data: a multiple-case study analysis of provider companies

    Big Data has recently emerged as a new digital paradigm, one that companies adopt in order to both transform existing business models and nurture their innovation activities. The peculiarities of Big Data applications span different fields such as customer need identification, risk management and decision-making, data-driven knowledge, product and service design, quality management, and opportunity recognition and creation. However, while these have resulted in the emergence of a rich research domain focusing on the managerial and practical implications typically addressed from the user perspective, there is still a lack of complete understanding of how companies that provide Big Data solutions can create and capture value from them. This paper explores the question of how provider companies create and capture value from Big Data, drawing on a multiple-case study analysis of provider companies that offer solutions and services based on Big Data. The results illustrate a theoretical framework on value creation and capture by relying on Big Data and identify two main innovation service strategies based on Big Data used by provider companies. In addition, this paper provides valuable insights as to how the network of involved stakeholders influences the design and implementation of the innovation service strategy by the provider companies

    Reappraising maturity models in e-Government research: the trajectory-turning point theory

    Drawing on the notion of alignment, this paper endeavors to reappraise e-Government maturity models in the English system of criminal justice. It argues that e-Government maturity models are characterized by relatively-stable trajectories which are punctuated by radical shifts toward full-blown e-Government transformation. Far from being a prescriptive and linear process, e-Government maturity is an unpredictable process where turning points (or radical shifts) play a crucial role in the e-Government strategizing process. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed by developing a new theory of e-Government maturity that explains the twists and turns of e-Government strategizing

    A triple‐win scenario for horizontal collaboration in logistics: determining enabling and key success factors

    Horizontal collaborations emerged as a new strategic option in the logistics sector during the last decade. However, successful implementation of horizontal collaborations is far from a developed issue due to several barriers that exist or emerge when setting up such collaborative projects. This study aims at identifying the enabling factors supporting successful implementation of horizontal collaborations in the logistics sector, and in identifying key success factors that logistics service providers (LSPs) should consider. Results from a within‐ and cross‐case analysis of two horizontal collaboration projects in the contract logistics sector support the proposed theoretical framework, highlighting both enabling and key success factors of horizontal collaborations. The former refers to factors that are related to LSPs, customers, and industries, whereas the latter results in a triple‐win scenario characterised by LSP competences, trust, and environmental management orientation of successful horizontal collaboration projects
