Making open data more personal through a social value perspective: a methodological approach

    No full text
In this paper, we address the problem of assessing the social value of open data. While the number of open data initiatives increases and many data sets are currently available to lay people, common citizens and end users, a still limited number of studies specifically address how to improve open data understandability, their usability by common users and the measurability of their value in terms of concrete outcomes and benefits for the intended communities and the individual who appropriate those data, to make them more personal and hence more valuable. Our goal is to contribute to the success of open data initiatives by defining a methodology by which to assess their perceived social value. In this paper, we present the conceptual content of the methodology, that is its main concepts and logic structure, and discuss it by means of an empirical user study in which we applied it to real-life open data sets and involving a large sample of prospective consumers of those open data. In particular, we focus on the health care domain in order to improve the welfare of the citizens that need health care services and use the Web to look for relevant information to address those situated needs. Among our main findings, we discovered a clear preference for visual information formats by women with respect to men, and a clear preference for hospitals ranking by disease for senior people with respect to younger

Technology intelligence practices in SMEs: evidence from Estonia

    No full text
Technology intelligence is regarded as a strategic tool to support open innovation to identify promising niches of technologies, opportunities and threats, potential partners, future customers and markets. However, it has often been neglected by SMEs due to their constraints in money, time, skills and competences. Hitherto, the literature documented very few cases of the operationalization of technology intelligence practices by small firms of catching-up economies. To remedy this gap, this paper investigates the case of three Estonian SMEs in the manufacturing, information technology and life-sciences industries. Our analysis reveals that elements of technology intelligence in large and small companies are similar. The three medium and small sized companies investigated in this study adopted these elements to their specific context orchestrating their organizational and cultural characteristics. This study details these elements and allows us to understand more precisely the process underlying the phenomenon of technology intelligence in small companies. The major finding of this paper is that a unique set of technology intelligence does not exist. It is important to tailor different elements of technology intelligence to determined needs. It is crucial in the case of SMEs in order to address the limitations mentioned above

Sustainable innovation in the dairy supply chain: enabling factors for intermodal transportation

    No full text
There is a need for the dairy supply chain to improve its environmental performance. Intermodal rail-road transportation can be a way to reduce CO2 emissions. However, despite technological innovations in the realm of cooling technology, which could enable a shift to intermodal transportation, the use of intermodal rail-road in the dairy supply chain is still low. A blueprint is needed to foster the application of intermodal transportation in the sector. Literature provides little guidance in this sense. Therefore, this paper investigates how to ease the shift to intermodal rail-road transportation in the dairy supply chain through multiple case studies, performed at different stages of the supply chain. A set of enablers of the shift is discussed, along with a blueprint for innovative technology, and logistics and business models. The plan takes into account all the actors of the dairy industry, as well as other players, i.e. technology providers, academia and institutions. This paper enriches literature, thanks to its multi-stage research, providing managers with a practical tool to support the shift to intermodal transportation in the dairy industry. The main limitations lay in the choice of the sample, i.e. only Italian companies and no small retailers and farmers have been involved
