Bacterial Cellulose: From Biofabrication to Applications in Sustainable Fashion and Vegan Leather
The rising demand for sustainable materials has led to a significant focus on developing resources from renewable systems, particularly through the integration of biological processes. Bacterial cellulose (BC) has emerged as a highly promising biomaterial, gaining attention across multiple industries, such as food, pharmaceuticals, materials science, and textiles, due to its renewable, biodegradable, and eco-friendly characteristics. Within the fashion industry, bacterial cellulose (BC) biofabrication presents a groundbreaking method for producing sustainable textiles and vegan leather. This systematic review emphasizes BC’s pivotal role in advancing sustainable materials, addressing challenges like low yields, strain instability, and high production costs, and exploring innovative biofabrication techniques to overcome these barriers. Current advancements aim to enhance the thickness, uniformity, and mechanical properties of BC layers by optimizing the environmental and nutritional conditions during Komagataeibacter cultivation and leveraging coculturing methods. Furthermore, recent innovations in synthetic biology and genetic engineering have opened new avenues for improving BC biosynthesis, making it a viable solution for the sustainable fashion industry. This review explores three core topics: (1) bacterial cellulose and its applications, (2) the biofabrication of BC for vegan leather, and (3) emerging innovations and patents utilizing bacterial cellulose as a sustainable industrial biomaterial

Implicit pragmatic phenomena in headlines of Hungarian health-related fake news
Fake news is often designed with clickbait headlines to reach a wide readership. The current work focuses on implicit pragmatic phenomena in fake news headlines, namely implicit arguments, implicit contents in speech acts, and implicatures, in order to add to the findings of earlier research on the topic. It provides a corpus-based analysis of Hungarian health-related fake news headlines. It concludes that (i) implicit arguments in headlines create an information gap and are only used as tools of manipulation to generate clicks; (ii) the intended perlocutionary effect of the headlines that appear as speech acts with incomplete propositional content or implicit illocutionary force is not the effective transfer of information but rather to evoke emotions manipulatively; (iii) the goal of the unfair use of implicatures may be to avoid responsibility. This study reveals that the special combination of explicit and implicit content in fake news headlines can create or widen an information gap, manipulate readers by generating psychological effects, convey false information, and stimulate peripheral processing
Detailed Insights into the Relationship Between Three-Dimensional Speckle-Tracking Echocardiography-Derived Systolic Left Atrial Global Strains and Left Ventricular Volumes in Healthy Adults from the MAGYAR-Healthy Study
Background and Objectives: The complex relationship between three-dimensional (3D) speckle-tracking echocardiography (3DSTE)-derived left ventricular (LV) and left atrial (LA) volumes and functional properties has been demonstrated in recent studies. A better understanding of LV volumetric dependence on systolic peak LA (reservoir) strains in healthy circumstances could complete this knowledge. Therefore, 3DSTE was used for the simultaneous evaluation of these parameters in healthy adults, aiming to examine their complex relationship. Materials and Methods: The present study consisted of 165 healthy individuals with a mean age of 33.1 ± 12.3 years and 90 men. A complete two-dimensional echocardiography with Doppler with 3DSTE was performed in all the cases. Results: The peak LA global radial (GRS), longitudinal (GLS), and 3D (G3DS) strains were increased in the subjects with a mean LV end-diastolic volume (EDV) as compared to those cases with a lower-than-mean LV-EDV. In the cases with a higher-than-mean LV-EDV, no further increase in these peak global LA strains could be detected. The peak LA global circumferential and area strains showed a tendentious (non-significant) increase with an increasing LV-EDV. The peak LA global strains showed similar non-significant associations with the LV end-systolic volume (except the peak LA-G3DS, which proved to be significant). Conclusions: In healthy adults, the 3DSTE-derived peak LA-GRS and LA-G3DS are increased with a larger LV-EDV up to a point, beyond which a further increase cannot be seen, suggesting a working Frank–Starling mechanism in this context similar to that for LA volumes. Similar associations are present for the peak LA-GLS as well
Mastery Motivation, Mastery Pleasure, and Self-Concept in Singing of Students in Specialized and Non-Specialized Music Classes
This study aimed to investigate differences in mastery motivation (MM), mastery pleasure (MP), and self-concept (SC) in singing based on class type (specialized non-specialized music classes) and gender across four grades: 1, 3, 5, and 7. It also explored the relationships between students’ demographic variables and the fundamental motivational factors in music education such as MM, MP, and SC. A survey questionnaire was administered to 586 elementary students in grades 1, 3, 5, and 7 in Hungary. The findings showed that the students from specialized music classes had higher MM, MP, and SC compared to those from non-specialized classes. Female students demonstrated higher MM, MP, and SC in signing across all grades, 1, 3, 5, and 7. Moreover, a negative correlation between grade and these factors showed that the younger students had higher MM, MP, and SC in singing than the older students. Demographic factors such as gender, grade, and class type, except for parental education, significantly influenced students’ development in MM, MP, and SC in singing. This study highlights the importance of specialized music education and early engagement in developing MM, MP, and SC in singing, suggesting that appropriate approaches based on age and gender could enhance students’ musical development
A comparative analysis of the antioxidant potential of watermelon (citrullus lanatus (thunb.)) mesocarp extract fractions evaluated by the DPPH method
Watermelon mesocarp contains bioactive compounds with antioxidant properties that hold significant scientific and industrial interest. Antioxidants from natural sources are increasingly explored for applications in food preservation, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals due to their efficacy and safety. This study aimed to identify fractions with strong antioxidant potential and explore their industrial applications. The crude extract was fractionated into water, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane fractions, and their antioxidant activity was evaluated using the DPPH method. The ethyl acetate fraction exhibited the strongest antioxidant activity, with an IC50 value of 7.68 ppm, which, while slightly less potent than ascorbic acid (IC50 = 4.09 ppm), demonstrated substantial free radical scavenging ability. This was followed by the water fraction (IC50 = 34.9 ppm), with the n-hexane fraction showing moderate activity (IC50 = 52.07 ppm). The ethyl acetate fraction of watermelon mesocarp extract demonstrated the strongest antioxidant activity, highlighting its potential for applications in food preservation and developing cosmetic formulations as a natural antioxidant source
Outcomes of pharmacist-led patient education on oral anticoagulant therapy: A scoping review
Oral anticoagulants (OACs) are commonly used to prevent and treat thromboembolism and stroke prevention in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). Vitamin K antagonist (VKAs) and direct oral anticoagulant (DOACs) therapies are challenging because of the possible risk of bleeding. Patient education by pharmacists could be beneficial for reducing the risk of adverse effects and improving therapeutic outcomes.This scoping review aimed to investigate the outcomes of pharmacist-led patient education interventions regarding VKAs and DOACs therapies.Three databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus) were used following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines to identify articles published between January 1, 2008, and December 31, 2024. The data were synthesized using Rayyan AI.A total of 1102 records were identified. After title and abstract screening, 77 studies were selected for full-text review, and 57 articles were ultimately included. The percentages of studies that examined VKAs, DOACs, and both (OACs) were 66.7 %, 19.3 %, and 14.0 %, respectively. At least one statistically significant outcome was detected in 81.6 % (31 out of 38) of the studies on VKAs, 36.4 % (4 out of 11) of the studies on DOACs and 50 % (4 out of 8) of the studies on OACs.This review revealed that pharmacist-led patient education was particularly effective in cases of VKAs, while the outcomes in cases of DOACs were modest. Moreover, while the role of pharmacists in patient education on VKAs has been widely studied, limited research has focused on the effect of pharmacist-led education on DOACs
