Preventing Radicalism through Integrative Curriculum at Higher Education
Religious radicalism which spread across the globe has turned into a global problem and raised concern among scholars to discuss. Higher education institutions which are supposed to educate cadre of high-intensity scholars on an empirical level have to some extent failed to meet the expectation. In Indonesia, some of the institutions have been deemed as a place of metamorphosis for potential site to nurture radicalism understanding and movement among their students on campus. This paper was aimed at investigating university effort to join the global struggle against radicalism. This study applied descriptive qualitative research using survey methods. Data were collected using observation and documentation. Using the theory of positive radicalism which demands transformation with a comprehensive religious understanding, this study analyzed the data. The results of the study show that the phenomenon of radicalism at higher education can be handled by implementing integrative curriculums as one of the feasible ways for higher education institutions to participate and establish their role. Integrative curriculum can be applied to catalyze new energy to present a more comprehensive and tolerant atmosphere by emphasizing the role of Islam in building world civilization
The Contribution of Bugis\u27 Traditional Games in Strengthening Students\u27 Character Education at Madrasa
Bugis\u27 traditional game originated from a folklore which is usually played by the society including children in Bone. It examines specifically mappasajang traditional game, its character value promotion and its contribution in strengthening students\u27 character education at madrasa. This study was qualitative and took place at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Amir al-Jannah Tippulue, Bone Regency. Primary data of this study were obtained from field observations and interviews with educational and community leaders. Secondary data were obtained from books and journals related to Bugis traditional games. Observation, interviews, and documentation were applied to gain the data. Qualitative data analysis was performed using interactive model analysis techniques. Triangulation was applied to test the validity of the data. The results showed that mappasajang traditional game could be played by both male and female madrasa students. This traditional Bugis game is full of character values. The traditional game contributed to strengthening students\u27 character education at madrasa. This can be seen in various aspects of community life, such as in the fields of education, social, economy, and health
Islamic Religious Learning for Muallaf at Pesantren
This study aims to describe the learning activities of Islamic Religious Education at the An-Naba Islamic Boarding School for muallaf. This research used a qualitative approach with a descriptive analytic method. Interviews, observation and documentation were applied to collect the data. Data were analyzed using the Milles and Huberman model analysis. The results showed that learning Islam for muallaf has the objectives to improve the quality of learning, create an ideal Muslim personality, foster Muslim morals, Muslim salimah personalities, and Muslims as caliphs. The optimization program for Islamic religious learning consists of a coaching program, an educational program, a development program, and a vocational education development program. The process of organizing Islamic religious learning for muallaf consists of four stages: shahâdah (the process of Islamization); ta\u27âruf (introduction) and tafâhum (understanding); ibthan (internalization); and muwâfaqah (acceptance).Â
The Leadership of Headmaster in Improving the Quality of Madrasa Education
The Quality of madrasa education depends on many factors like the leadership of headmaster which is crucial and influential to other supporting factors in maintaining and securing quality education of madrasa. This paper was aimed at investigating the leadership of madrasa headmasters in improving the quality of madrasa education in Maluku Province. It also investigated the contribution of headmaster leadership toward the teachers’ characteristic that contribute immensely to educational service. This study applied descriptive qualitative using a naturalistic approach. To achieve the objectives of the study, observations, interviews, and documentation were used in data collection techniques. The data collected were analyzed using Miles and Huberman model. The study found that the leadership of headmaster has contributed to the improvement quality of madrasa education. The leaderships included many aspects like the ability to create, plan, organize and communicate within organization of madrasa. The headmaster leadership also played significant role in building the characteristics of teacher like theological trait, physical, intelligence and personal charcteristics. Those characteristics are pivotal in improving teachers’ quality of educational service
Kyai Leadership in Internalizing Nationalism Values at Pesantren
This study aims to examine the leadership of the kyai in Pesantren Salâfiyah Cidahu Pandeglang. It specifically explored the leadership of the kyai and its role in internalizing nationalism values for students in pesantren. This study used a descriptive-qualitative method. The data were obtained through interviews, observation and documentation. The results showed that the leadership of the kyai has played a role in internalizing a spirit of nationalism for the students. The process of internalizing the spirit of nationalism was carried out through giving advice and exemplary, book recitation activities, baḥṡ al-masâ\u27il, community service, entrepreneurial activities, organizational activities, leadership training, maintaining traditions, and democracy-related activities. Lack of the students\u27 motivation to learn and the limited facilities and infrastructure were the obstacles in nurturing the values of nationalism. To solve the obstacles, kyai provided motivation for the students, built the students\u27 confidence and self-confidence, and established network with the society and government
Santri\u27s Emotional Intelligence and Big Five Personalities on Bullying Behaviors in Pesantren
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of two independent variables; emotional intelligence and big five personalities, on the dependent variable, namely the bullying behavior of teenage santri at pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) in West Sumatra. This study used a quantitative approach with multiple regression analysis methods with a significance level of 0.05 or 5%. The sample consisted of 200 santri in pesantren of West Sumatra, taken using a non-probability sampling technique. The data collection instruments used the Wong and Law\u27s Emotional Intelligence Scale, the Big Five Inventory and the Revised Olweus Bullying/Victim Questionnaire (OBVQ). The results of this study indicate that there is a significant influence on emotional intelligence and big five personality toward bullying behavior of santri. Emotional intelligence consist of self-assessment, emotional assessment of others, emotional regulation, emotional use. The big five personality consist of extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, openness. The hypothesis test results show that two minor hypotheses significantly affect the bullying behavior of santri in pesantren, namely the emotional regulation dimension of self-emotional assessment and the agreeableness dimension of the big five personalities
Implementing Child-Friendly Teaching Methods to Improve Qur\u27an Reading Ability
As Qur\u27an serve as guidance in Muslim life, it goes without saying that there is an obligation for parents to teach their children the ability to read the Islamic holy book. On the part of school institution, educators are expected to offer interesting teaching methods to read Qur\u27an so that they have an ease to acquire the ability. This study was aimed at investigating the relationship between teaching methods and students\u27 ability to read Qur\u27an. This study applied an action research to explore practical problems and to find some solutions to the problems encountered. The research subjects were 283 students of class VII at SMPN (Sekolah Menengah Pertama Negeri/State Junior High School) 2 Porong. This study collected data through: survey, observation, and semi-structured interviews. The findings show that students\u27 ability to read Qur\u27an can be categorized into four levels namely: Ibtida 1, Ibtida 2, Jayyid, and Jayyid Jidan. Those four categories placed students based on their abilities in reading Qur\u27an. According to Pearson correlation, there was a significance value of 0.000 <0.05, which means there is a linear relationship between the teaching methods and the students\u27 ability to read Qur\u27an. Following this result, some methods of learning to read Qur\u27an like Iqra, Tahqiq, Talaqqi Mushafahah, and CMSA (Cara Mengaji Santri Aktif/an active way to read Qur\u27an for students) are in position to be applied in order to improve children\u27s Qur\u27an reading abilities
The Benefit of Islamic Faith Education to Enhance Children Social and Emotional Skills
There is an increasing trend among parents nowadays to choose Islamic elementary school. This has triggered the increasing amount of schools that adopt religious bases such as Kuttab Al-Fatih (KAF), a school that emphasized manner education and Islamic faith teaching. The purposes of this study are to correlate Islamic faith education given by parents and student’s social and emotional skills and to compare children\u27s emotional and social skills from parents whose children schooled in KAF and in other schools. The measurement of children\u27s social and emotional skills contains three dimensions: persistence, self-control, and social competence. Meanwhile, faith education by parents was measured using how much parents teach faith indicator. There are 52 parents participated in this study. Results showed there is a significant correlation between faith education and social and emotional skills (r=.302, p < .05), and there is no significant difference in social and emotional skills between children who submitted to KAF and to other schools
Building Character Education Using Three Matra of Hasan Al-Banna’s Perspective in Pesantren
This study aimed to describe the efforts of Pesantren Nurul Jadid to implement of Hasan al-Banna\u27s thought about Three Matra of education, namely the education of mind, body, and heart (qalb), in constructing students’ characters at Pesantren Nurul Jadid Paiton Probolinggo East Java. This research used a qualitative method of case study type. The results showed that; pesantren has implemented Three Matra by delivering education for mind, body, and heart for its santri. It has set the moto which is in line with Hasan al Banna\u27s thought in building the character of students. It is supported by its vision and mission which was described in the trilogy of students and five/panca awareness of students, education and learning activity, habituation, making of regulation as the norm of binding and organizing activity students
The Implementation of Islamic Local Content in Building Character Education at Junior High Shcool Al Amanah Bandung
Education system constitutes an important stage in growing, developing, and strengthening the character of younger generation. This means that the objectives of education at the institutional level (school) can be a representation of the goals of national education that covers character education. The study aimed to describe the implementation of the curriculum of local Islamic content through curricular, co-curricular and extracurricular programs at SMP (Sekolah Menengah Pertama/junior high school) Al-Amanah Cileunyi to shape the character of students in accordance with Islamic morals. This study applied a naturalistic qualitative approach. The approach is used due to the problems that are currently occurring naturally at the present time, namely student character education at SMP Al-Amanah Cileunyi. The research finding showed that  SMP Al-Amanah Cileunyi has a local Islamic content curriculum, both as a subject matter and an extra-curricular activity, Islamic local content that applies at SMP Al-Amanah Cileunyi featuring character values that are originated from the Islamic teachings, and eighteen national character values as determined by the government, and the implementation of Islamic local content is through the activities of self-development, habituation, extra-curricular, exemplary, and the integration of character education within learning process. However, there are some problems encountered in its implementation, among others due to inconsistent attitudes of school community and the gap between character education programs and their implementation. The result of character education through the implementation of Islamic local content is shown by the qualitative scores in the report book, and the increasing trust of parents and the community to SMP Al-Amanah Cileunyi
