    Building Public Trust in Islamic School through Adaptive Curriculum

    This study aims to investigate an adaptive curriculum serving as a medium to build public trust at Islamic Elementary School (SDI) Tompokersan Lumajang, East Java. It is qualitative using phenomenological methods. Data were collected using interview, observation and documentation techniques. They were analyzed through several steps: data collection, data reduction, data presentation and conclusions. The results showed that the implementation of an adaptive curriculum was done by optimizing the role of school committees, developing excellent school, offering variations in extracurricular activities to motivate students, and providing counseling guidance programs. This research suggests the importance of innovation in delivering education to meet the social dynamics and global change

    Constructing Ethical Critical Thinking at Pesantren

    Santri has been viewed as students who respect their kiai (teacher), parents and senior teachers, and might not able to think critically. The research aims to investigate efforts to foster students’ ethical critical thinking at pesantren (Islamic boarding school) in Kediri, East Java. This study uses a qualitative approach and sociological-phenemonological methods. Data obtained through observation and interviews. The research findings show that the patron-client pattern a pattern of relations between kiai and santri at pesantren can have both positive and negative impacts. The positive impact can be seen from the form of good relations and mutual respect between the kiai and students. Meanwhile, the negative impact refers to students’ fatalistic attitude towards life and an uncritical scientific view. Critical education in pesantren has practically been implemented even though partially. Education in pesantren is currently required to build an integrative educational paradigm by involving all human potential in fostering a critical, creative and democratic culture in addition to upholding ethics

    Contextualizing Mahmud Yunus\u27 Islamic Education Concept in Madrasah Aliyah

    Islamic education will always develop in every era to respond to the world\u27s changes. This situation can be a challenge for Islamic education to ensure its advancement in terms of its existence and management. This study aims to investigate the implementation of the Mahmud Yunus concept of Islamic education at Madrasah Aliyah Miftahul Huda Tegalwaru. The method used in this study is a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. Data were collected using observation, interview and documentation. The Analysis of data is done through: data reduction, data interpretation, and conclusion. The results of this study indicate that the concept of Mahmud Yunus\u27 Islamic education can be implemented to overcome the problems of Islamic education. At Madrasah Aliyah Miftahul Huda Tegalwaru, the concept is implemented starting from the goals of Islamic education which are based on moral education, an integrated curriculum, methods that always evolves, educators who must be willing to learn with technological advances, and evaluations that use letters rather than numbers

    Reinforcing Religious Moderation through Local Culture-Based Pesantren

    The study aims to explore the diversity of pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) in Soppeng Regency, Indonesia. The regency is known as a place for multicultural education based on local culture which is expected to strengthen religious moderation. This research is qualitative with a phenomenological approach. The object is selected purposively; four pesantren institutions in Soppeng Regency, Yasrib (Nahdhatul Ulama), Muhammadiyah Lajoa, Al-Irsyad (Darud Da\u27wah wal Irsyad) Pattojo, and Al-Ihsan Appanang (Jamaah Tablig). The results of the study show that the diversity of pesantren serves as a place for multicultural education. Pesantren may reflect the diversity of society, founding organizations, institutional typologies, and networks. The local culture-based pesantren is designed to promote multicultural education model which was developed by applying several local culture values: sipakatau (mutual respect), sigunakannge\u27 (reminding each other), sipakalebbi (mutual glorification), and sipammase-mase (mutual love). Those values are used as the principles of multiculturalism which is carried out with the ethos of siri (respect themselves) in the life of the pesantren community. Multicultural education model strengthens the principle of wasaá¹­iyah (moderate) religious moderation through the ideology of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-JamÄ\u27ah. Religious moderation facilitates the society to accommodate local culture, express strong national commitments, and grow tolerance in the spirit of egalitarianism

    Modeling Analysis, Findings, Development, Organizing the Material and Learning for Students in Islamic Boarding Schools

    This study aims to determine the effect of a learning model called AFDOL (Analyzing, Finding, Developing, Organizing, and Learning (AFDOL) to increase students\u27 critical thinking skills to find and gain new knowledge in learning Islamic traditional book at pesantren. This research is an R&D. It was carried out in class XII at pesantren in Jambi City. Two parallel classes were used, one class serving as the control group and one class as the experimental group. The result shows that AFDOL learning model can further improve students\u27 critical thinking skills compared to conventional learning models. The learning model can improve students’ critical thinking skills to find new knowledge in learning Islamic traditional books. It enables teachers to deliver a more systematic learning process to improve students\u27 understanding and critical thinking skills in learning Islamic traditional books

    Integration of Religion and Culture in Muslim Minority Communities through Islamic Education

    The clash between Islam and culture often occurs in efforts to disseminate Islamic education to the society especially in areas with Muslim minority communities. This study aims to explore the integration of culture and Islam in Muslim minority areas in the context of implementing Islamic education. The research took place at two Madrasah Aliyah schools and one Madrasah Tsanawiyah located in Tarutung City. This study applied qualitative and phenomenological approach. The data were obtained through observation, interviews, and documentation techniques. Triangulation techniques were used to analyze the data. The informants involved in this study were community leaders, educational leaders and religious leaders. The results of the study show that Islamic religion and culture can be integrated in socializing Islamic education to people in Muslim minority areas in Indonesia. Many aspects of Batak culture are maintained because they are in accordance with Islamic religious teaching. Some aspect of Batak culture that are contrary to Islamic religious teachings are adapted to be compatible with Islamic religious teachings. In this study, the integration of Islamic religion and Batak  culture  went fairly smoothly and is accepted by the community to deliver in Islamic education in the region

    Applying Higher Order Thinking Skill (HOTS) to Strengthen Students’ Religious Moderation at Madrasah Aliyah

    The study aims to analyze students\u27 analytical abilities about religious moderation for religious worship through learning PAI (Pendidikan Agama Islam/Islamic Religious Education) at the State Madrasah Aliyah. This study uses a qualitative-quantitative approach with a survey method. The number of respondents to this study was 468 students of madrasah aliyah in West Java, Central Java and South Sulawesi. Data were collected using written tests and interviews. Data were analyzed using content analysis and descriptive statistics. The findings of this study indicate that studentrs’ religious moderation is strenthened in the teaching of Islamic aspects of Aqidah in madrasah aliyah through the development of higher-level thinking learning (HOTS) by connecting the values of moderation in aqidah in everyday life. These findings reinforce the urgency of learning in strengthening religious moderation through higher order thinking skills

    Quran Literacy for Students with Special Needs

    The study is aimed to investigate the implementation of teaching Quran literacy for students with disabilities. It applied qualitative. Data were collected using observation and interviews with teachers of Iqro (Quran for beginner). The participants of the study were students with disabilities studying in schools for special need in  Bengkulu and Ciamis regency West Java Indonesia. The schools include MI (Madrasah Ibtidaiyyah/Islamic Elementary School) Mutiara Asyifa, Abdurrahamn Bin Auf, SDLB (Sekolah Dasar Luar Biasa/Elementary School for Special Need) Islam Amal Mulya, SLB (Sekolah Luar Biasa/School for Special Need) Baiturrahman Cisaga, and SLB Albarokah Baregbeg. The result showed that the schools have provided minimum service for teaching and learning Quran/Iqro for students with disabilities. There are two factors causing the situation; the scarcity of PAI (Pendidikan Agama Islam/Islamic Religious Education) teachers in the schools and the absence of reliable Quran reading methods. The teachers background are language teachers who had no experience and competence for Islamic religious education. In addition, the learning method for Iqro is similar to the BISINDO (Bahasa Isyarat Indonesia/Indonesian Sign Language) method for reading by sign language. This study suggests that PTKIN (State Islamic Higher Education) offering PAI to provide a program for Quran reading and writing courses for students with disabilities

    Evaluating Mandatory Tahfȋẓ Quran Program Implementation at Madrasah

    Mandatory tahfȋẓ is a program initiated by the Regional Office of the Ministry of Religion Affairs Yogyakarta Province. The core of the program is that every madrasah is required to target its students to memorize the Quran at least one juz before graduating from studying at the madrasa. This paper describes and evaluates the mandatory tahfȋẓ program at Madrasah Tsanawiyah in Yogyakarta which has been running since 2016. The approach used is quantitative-qualitative. Data were collected using observation techniques, interviews, and questionnaires. The results of the study show that through the CIPP evaluation model (context, input, process, and product) the mandatory tahfȋẓ program at Madrasah Tsanawiyah in Yogyakarta is running well. In terms of the context evaluation, 5% of madrasas include tahfiz in their vision and mission. The program does not have full parental support. When it comes to input aspect, the mandatory tahfȋẓ activities are carried out by 67% of teachers with bachelor\u27s degrees. For evaluation process, madatory tahfȋẓ is carried out for 2-8 hours of lessons. The effectiveness of madtory tahfȋẓ evaluation products is below 30%

    Implementing Learning Strategies for Moderate Islamic Religious Education in Islamic Higher Education

    Religious Moderation in education is important to implement because it can bring a deterrent effect to the students’ religious understanding and practice to avoid radicalism in higher education. The present study is aimed at investigating learning strategies to deliver Islamic Religious Education in higher education. A qualitative method with a case study approach was applied in this study. The data were collected by using interview, documentation, and observation. The results show that the university applied several learning strategies to strengthen students’ psychomotor and affective aspects in the form of experiential, habituation, emotional, functional, and rational strategies. Those strategies can be implemented by using various learning methods such as lectures, discussions, experiments, and assignments that promote moderate Islamic values and Rahmatan LiAlaminin
