This paper provides evidence on Young Adults’ motivations for visiting and not visiting museums. Using purposive sampling, self-administered questionnaires were distributed to respondents in Kedah, Malaysia and Eskisehir, Turkey. Both Kedah and Eskisehir share one similarity – they both have many museums. The findings revealed that in both study contexts, young people tended to visit museums for practical reasons such as to help them prepare homework or a project. They also visit for intrinsic reasons such as to satisfy their curiosity. Both samples also illustrate Davies (2001) contention that awareness is an important precursor to potential visits. On the other hand, both samples are different in reasons for not visiting. While young people in Eskisehir cite emotional reasons for deciding not to visit, young people in Kedah offered more practical ones such as lack of time and interest, or more interested in other activities. The study findings are useful for understanding reasons behind the generally low museum visits among youth. Several managerial implications of the study were also proposed. Beberapa implikasi kajian turut dicadangkan

A Quality Assessment of Tourist Information: the Case of Nautical Tourism at Shiretoko Peninsula

The success of tourism promotion in a destination partially depends on the extent to which it successfully links varied products catering to a heterogeneous group of visitors in a multi-client system. In contemporary destination marketing, communication between the service providers at the destination and the (prospective) tourists has become increasingly important as a result of the rise in informal communication channels and social media. This paper focuses on the effect of using different information sources when booking a cruise tour in Shiretoko Peninsula (a natural World Heritage Site) by employing a multi-group structural model. Our findings revealed that a mismatch between the expectation created by the visitors based on the information about the site and the satisfaction they experience when visiting the place can be a strong factor of dissatisfaction, with negative implications on the possible recommendations and loyalty. Additionally, it was possible to conclude that information available on the internet and via guidebooks seems to negatively affect satisfaction on certain elements and routes, while local information from tourist offices, hotels and local shops was found less problematic. The success of tourism promotion in a destination partially depends on the extent to which it successfully links varied products catering to a heterogeneous group of visitors in a multi-client system. The paper proposes the analyses of medium-long term dynamics experienced by the accommodation system of Sardinia in the light of growing maturity signals for regional tourist product. Potentials referring to a progressive diversification of incoming markets have been assessed in the light of domestic and international outgoing flows, as well as of megatrends crossing international tourism market. Results underline an only apparent inconsistency with respect to the positive evolution of macroeconomic variables relating to regional hospitality sector.L’articolo propone una rilettura delle dinamiche di medio-lungo periodo sperimentate del sistema ricettivo della Sardegna alla luce del crescente grado di maturità della destinazione.

Tourism development across the Middle East and North Africa is mostly based on low cost and mass beach leisure. This kind of tourism development generated, already in 1980s, a rapid conversion of the whole of the Mediterranean coast into a pleasure “periphery of Europe”. Despite this trend, a different scenario emerged already in the 1990s with the increasing of interests in the development of territorial resources and cultural heritage sites for tourism. This new development has been relevant in the process of Euro-Mediterranean Partnership, particularly for the social and cultural basket that includes the higher education policy of the European Union. But the current European malaise and the developments in the post-Arab Spring countries could transform Euro-Mediterranean relations. In order to open new windows of opportunity, a reshaping of the Erasmus Mundus program can be crucial.

    Get PDF
In this paper, we review the costs and benefits for local authorities of holding the Venice Carnival. After reviewing the recent history of this event and the role of local authorities in revitalizing it, we analyze the various costs they incur for its organization. We subsequently compute the additional expenditures of tourists and daily trippers and investigate the distribution of this extra income into various beneficiaries. The overall benefit-costs balance proves strongly positive.
