Meeting User Requirements for Mapping and Characterizing Deprived Urban Areas in Support of Pro-Poor Policies. GI_Forum|GI_Forum 2021, Volume 1|
Spatial data on Low-and-Middle-Income-Country (LMIC) cities, and deprived areas within cities, are often not readily available in support of local and global information needs. To address this information gap, we propose the systematic semi-automated SLUMAP framework that provides policy-relevant information on deprived urban areas in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), based on free open-source software (FOSS). First, we assess user needs for spatial information on deprivation (ranging from local communities to global research and policy support). Second, we show how free or low-cost image datasets can be used for mapping the location of deprived areas at the city scale and providing an overall assessment of their spatial patterns. This is implemented as a grid-based approach using machine learning and assessing the contribution of a large number of spectral and spatial features derived from open or low-cost imagery. Third, we show how higher (spatial and spectral) resolution data can provide a detailed characterization of such areas, with a GEOBIA/machine-learning workflow and deep learning techniques. We illustrate the experiments and results on the city of Nairobi (Kenya)and discuss transferability to SSA cities

Twin Peaks: The Emergence of Bimodal Fertility Profiles in Latin America
In contrast to most other low-fertility regions, the fall in period fertility to sub-replacement level in Latin America was not accompanied by a sharp decline in fertility rates at young reproductive ages. Reconstructing period fertility rates by age, birth order and level of education, we investigate changes in the age pattern of childbearing in four Latin American countries that experienced a decline in period total fertility rates below the replacement level in the early 2000s—Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica and Uruguay. Our analysis shows that all the four countries display a combination of continuing high rates of childbearing at younger ages with a parallel increase in first birth rates at later reproductive ages. This pattern is also manifested by the emergence of bimodal schedules of first birth rates by age, especially in Chile and Uruguay. We show that this reproductive polarization is more pronounced than the bimodal profiles identified earlier for selected countries of Europe and the United States. We suggest that Latin American low fertility pattern is linked to a high level of income inequality and wide social status differences in the region that go hand in hand with a high rate of unplanned early pregnancies and births, especially among women with lower education

Mathematical analysis of some iterative methods for the reconstruction of memory kernels. ETNA - Electronic Transactions on Numerical Analysis
We analyze three iterative methods that have been proposed in the computational physics community for the reconstruction of memory kernels in a stochastic delay differential equation known as the generalized Langevin equation. These methods use the autocorrelation function of the solution of this equation as input data. Although they have been demonstrated to be useful, a straightforward Laplace analysis does not support their conjectured convergence. We provide more detailed arguments to explain the good performance of these methods in practice. In the second part of this paper we investigate the solution of the generalized Langevin equation with a perturbed memory kernel. We establish sufficient conditions including error bounds such that the stochastic process corresponding to the perturbed problem converges to the unperturbed process in the mean square sense
