    On the regularization effect of stochastic gradient descent applied to least-squares. ETNA - Electronic Transactions on Numerical Analysis

    We study the behavior of the stochastic gradient descent methodapplied to Axb22min\|Ax -b \|_2^2 \rightarrow \min for invertible matrices ARn×nA \in \mathbb{R}^{n \times n}. We show that there is an explicit constant cAc_{A} depending (mildly) on AA such thatEAxk+1b22(1+cAAF2)Axkb222AF2ATA(xkx)22. \mathbb{E}\left\| Ax_{k+1}-b\right\|^2_{2} \leq \left(1 + \frac{c_{A}}{\|A\|_F^2}\right) \left\|A x_k -b \right\|^2_{2} - \frac{2}{\|A\|_F^2} \left\|A^T A (x_k - x)\right\|^2_{2}.This is a curious inequality since the last term involves one additional matrix multiplication applied to the error xkxx_k - x compared to the remaining terms: if the projection of xkxx_k - x onto the subspace of singular vectors corresponding to large singular values is large, then the stochastic gradient descent method leads to a fast regularization. For symmetric matrices, this inequality has an extension to higher-order Sobolev spaces. This explains a (known) regularization phenomenon: an energy cascade from large singular values to small singular values acts as a regularizer

    While many studies exist to identify buildings from optical satellite images, radar-based approaches are still lacking in humanitarian contexts. This article outlines the main challenges related to scattering mechanisms returning from huts, tents, informal dwellings, and their natural surroundings, but also from geometric distortions caused by the side-looking radar aperture. An outlook summarizes how these limitations can be overcome by image enhancement or multi-image composites, but also by advanced methods on building extraction, such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs). This article aims to stimulate scientific debate and to lay a foundation for the development of new methods

    Under-Five Child Growth and Nutrition Status: Spatial Clustering of Indian Districts

    Variation in human growth and the genetic and environmental factors that are influencing it have been described worldwide. The objective of this study is to assess the geographical variance of under-five children nutritional status and its related covariates across Indian districts. We use the most recent fourth round of the Indian National Family Health Survey conducted in 2015-2016, which for the first time offers district level information. We employ principal component analysis (PCA) on the demographic and socio-economic determinants of childhood morbidity and conduct hierarchical clustering analysis to identify geographical patterns in nutritional status among children of age under five at the district level. Our results reveal strong geographical clustering among the districts of India. Throughout most of Southern India, children are provided with relatively better conditions for growth and improved nutritional status, as compared to districts in the central, particularly rural parts of India. Looking at average weight, as well as the proportion of children that suffer from underweight and wasting, northeastern Indian districts seem to be offering living conditions more conducive to healthy child development. The geographical clustering of malnutrition, as well as below-average child height and weight coincides with high poverty, low female education, lower BMI among mothers, higher prevalence of both parity 4+ and teenage pregnancies. The present study highlights the importance of combining PCA and cluster analysis methods in studying variation in under-five child growth and nutrition at the district level. We identify the geographical areas, where children are under severe risk of undernutrition, stunting and wasting and contribute to formulating policies to improve child nutrition in India

    Despite the Indian government’s continuing efforts to encourage children to attend school, levels of educational wellbeing among some groups of children during their elementary schooling remain low. High school dropout and grade repetition rates are among the negative and deleterious outcomes of poor educational wellbeing in children that are rarely discussed as policy issues. Using the panel dataset of the India Human Development Survey (IHDS) conducted in 2005 and 2012, this study explores the effects of educational wellbeing on children’s later educational outcomes, as measured by their school dropout and grade repetition rates. Variation in the educational outcomes of children across states was also examined. The results show that the children whose educational wellbeing index was below average during their elementary schooling were more likely to drop out of school or repeat a grade in early adolescence. For policymakers, this study highlights that the experiences of children during their elementary schooling merit more attention

    Disentangling anthropogenic drivers of climate change impacts on alpine plant species: Alps vs. Mediterranean mountains final report

    Global warming has been strongly accelerating in the last decades. Climate models tell us that this trend will continue in the future, accompanied by a marked decline in precipitation in Southern Europe, whereas the Alps will likely receive more winter and less summer precipitation. Climate factors and additionally nitrogen deposition and land-use changes have been identified as global change factors posing threats on high-mountain biodiversity, ecosystem stability and services. On the other hand, the characteristic micro-topographic variability of high mountain ecosystems may buffer them against global change impacts. Monitoring data from European mountain peaks show that changes in biodiversity patterns are closely related to rising temperatures. However, the effects of climate change on plant biodiversity differ significantly between temperate and Mediterranean biomes with species richness increases synchronously with warming in the former and richness decreases in the latter. The MediAlps project aimed at disentangling anthropogenic and natural factors underlying differential changes in plant species composition and richness observed on mountain summits in the European Alps and the Mediterranean biome at the local and regional spatial scale. Changes in plant species richness and composition and present land-use impact based on systematic field observations were recorded on long-term monitoring plots on 23 summits. Soil temperature, water potential and local dry nitrogen deposition were measured in situ. Topographic parameters were recorded with photogrammetric methods. At the regional level, climate data and regional nitrogen deposition data from online resources (CHELSA, EMEP) were used and past land-use impact was assessed via guideline-aided semi-structured interviews. (Generalized) linear mixed-effects models and structural equation models (SEM) were employed to assess the impact of these drivers on biodiversity changes. Furthermore, spatio-temporal analyses based on satellite images were conducted. Climate change is and will probably continue to be the main driver of plant biodiversity, species composition and their changes on mountain summits in both biomes. However, there are biome-specific differences with precipitation playing an important role in the Mediterranean biome in addition to temperature, which clearly is the most important single factor in the temperate biome. These changes will likely lead to a further thermophilisation in both biomes. The upwards movement of species from lower elevations will likely also result in a biotic homogenization of the vegetation, exacerbated by the decline of high-elevation endemic species. Species richness will likely continue to increase in the temperate biome until the “pay-off” of extinction debts or threshold effects of population size on extinction risks set in. With decreasing precipitation species richness in the Mediterranean biome will probably decline in the long run, too. Nevertheless, other anthropogenic drivers have to be considered as well, although their influence is arguably much smaller than that of climate variables, namely nitrogen deposition with a negative influence on species richness change in the temperate biome and present land-use with a positive one in the Mediterranean biome. In addition to MediAlps’ main focus on comparing multiple anthropogenic ecological drivers in the Alps with the Mediterranean mountains, the project substantially contributed to a spatially larger scaled long-term observation effort in the frame of the GLORIA (Global Observation Research Initiative in Alpine Environments) program
