In Jeremias Gotthelf’s best-selling novel ›Uli, der Knecht‹, hostility towards Jews is more pronounced than research until now recognized. The „Baumwollenhändler“, an important opponent of the main character, has to be a converted Jew. In a proto racist manner, the narrator attributes relevant stereotypes to the merchant despite the supposable conversion – thereby documenting the dawn of biologically arguing hostility towards Jews
