No full textPartners’ Educational Pairings, Work Divisions, and Fertility: Evidence from Germany
No full textThe relationship between education and fertility among individuals systematically varies by the education of the partner, according to previous research. For example, couples with two highly educated partners seem to have an accelerated transition to second births, compared to couples with one highly educated partner only, at least in some countries. However, little is known about the underlying mechanisms which may drive this phenomenon. Bringing together the literature on the education-fertility nexus and on associations between men’s involvement with domestic work and fertility, this study investigates the role of gendered domestic work divisions for the educational pairing-fertility relationship in couples. Using data from the German Socio-Economic Panel, cox regression, and a cohort approach, findings confirm educational pairing effects; hypergamous couples have higher first birth rates in the birth cohorts 1950-1965 and 1966-75, while highly educated homogamous couples display the highest second birth rates in all examined birth cohorts (1950-65, 1966-75, 1976-85). While educational pairing effects for first births are largely mediated by paid and unpaid work divisions, this is not the case for second births. Here, positive effects of increases in his time spent with housework are independent of the educational pairing effect, warranting future exploration into additional mechanisms
Handmade Burnished Pottery in the Palace of Ayios Vasileios, Laconia (Southern Greece) .. Orea|Punta di Zambrone I Oriental and European Archaeology Volume 17|
No full textThe handmade burnished pottery appears in the late 13th and early 12th centuries BCE at many palatial centres of the Greek mainland and is particularly frequent in the Argolid. In the southeastern Peloponnese, Ayios Vasileios is, next to the Menelaion, the second site where this peculiar pottery class was found. The ongoing excavation in the newly found palatial centre may add valuable information for the interpretation of handmade pottery of the early 12th century BCE. The handmade pottery from Ayios Vasileios reflects shapes and decoration of Italian impasto pottery traditions that were common in many other sites of the Greek mainland and on Crete. The new finds seem to support the hypothesis of a foreign – in this case most probably Italian – population segment present in major centres, especially during the period that followed the severe destruction of the palaces in the Argolid. In the light of the typological connections between the Laconian and the Argolidan handmade burnished ware, especially from Tiryns, we suggest a movement of small groups of people from the Argolid to the south

Den hierin liegenden Herausforderungen und Fragen nach der Notwendigkeit einersozial-ökologischen Transformation widmet sich die virtuelle Podiumsdiskussion des ‚Thementags Klimawandel’ auf dergeographischen Fachtagung #GeoWoche2021. Dort diskutieren die Geograph*innen Elke Hertig, Thomas Loster, LuisaNeubauer und Patrick Sakdapolrak die Fragestellung „Was können wir aus der Corona-Pandemie für den Umgang mitder Klimakrise lernen?” In diesem Beitrag werden Möglichkeiten aufgezeigt, diese Diskussion (als Liveübertragung am07.10.2021 oder im Nachhinein als Videoaufzeichnung) in den Geographie- und GW-Unterricht einzubinden.
