    The Reproductive Value in Distributed Optimal Control Models

    We show that in a large class of distributed optimal control models (DOCM), wherepopulation is described by a McKendrick type equation with an endogenous number ofnewborns, the reproductive value of Fisher shows up as part of the shadow price of thepopulation. Depending on the objective function, the reproductive value may be negative.Moreover, we show results of the reproductive value for changing vital rates. To motivateand demonstrate the general framework, we provide examples in health economics,epidemiology, and population biology

Als humangeographische Forschungsmethode fragt die Bildanalyse nach der Wirklichkeit und der Wirkungsweise von Bildern im Verhältnis von Gesellschaft und Raum. Der Beitrag führt fachlich und methodisch in die humangeographische Bildanalyse ein und diskutiert ihren Beitrag zur geographischen Bildungsforschung im Hinblick auf die Vermittlung von Bild(lese)kompetenz und den mündigen Umgang mit medialer Bildlichkeit. Als Unterrichtsbeispiel wird eine Analyse visuellen Materials für eine differenzierte Auseinandersetzung mit dem Problem Müll vorgestellt

    Reduced-order modeling has a long tradition in computational fluid dynamics. The ever-increasing significance of data for the synthesis of low-order models is well reflected in the recent successes of data-driven approaches such as Dynamic Mode Decomposition and Operator Inference. With this work, we discuss an approach to learning structured low-order models for incompressible flow from data that can be used for engineering studies such as control, optimization, and simulation. To that end, we utilize the intrinsic structure of the Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible flows and show that learning dynamics of the velocity and pressure can be decoupled, thus, leading to an efficient operator inference approach for learning the underlying dynamics of incompressible flows. Furthermore, we demonstrate the performance of the operator inference in learning low-order models using two benchmark problems and compare with an intrusive method, namely proper orthogonal decomposition, and other data-driven approaches

    Past and Future of Human Capital in Southeast Asia: From 1970 to 2030

    This paper examines levels of educational attainment in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines,Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam for the period 1970-2030 through the reconstruction andprojection of levels of educational attainment. While the study of the past shows that thedetermination to invest in education has been strong in the six countries, the investments wereimplemented at different pace and intensity, the projections show the legacy of pastinvestments. In Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand, there will be tangible increases in theproportion of the working age population with a tertiary education. The Philippines will have adichotomous society where large proportions will either have a tertiary education or only aprimary education. In Indonesia, the bulk of the working age population will shift fromprimary in 2000 to secondary by 2030. The projection horizon and the trend type of scenariodo not allow Vietnam to catch up with the other countries

    The Lower Austrian site of Kammern-Grubgraben is one of the few stratigraphically recorded sites from the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) that allows detailed insights into the life of glacial hunter-gatherer societies. Extensive and planned archaeological excavations took place for the first time between 1985 and 1994 under the direction of Friedrich Brandtner in cooperation with Anta Montet-White (1985–1990) and Bohuslav Klíma (1993–1994), following earlier smaller, isolated findings and unqualified, largely undocumented excavations. After Brandtner’s death in 2000, the exceptionally rich find material remained largely unprocessed and barely published. It was not until 2011 to 2015 that the Institute for Oriental and European Archaeology (OREA, now: the Austrian Archaeological Institute – OeAI) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW) succeeded in completely recording and inventorying the material in the course of a cooperation project with the Institutes for Prehistory and Early History of the University of Cologne and the Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg, funded by the legal owner of the finds, the State of Lower Austria. Field research was resumed in 2015, when it became known that land consolidation and the relocation of an access road had begun in the area of the site without prior notification of the authorities. After initial prospections (profiles and percussion cores) by the Quaternary Archaeology research group (OREA/OeAI, OeAW) initiated and funded by the Federal Office for the Protection of Monuments (BDA), regular research activities subsidised by the State of Lower Austria were started in the form of annual one- to two-month excavation campaigns. Once again, an exceptionally extensive inventory of finds including bones, knapped lithics and jewellery was documented and recovered, as well as stone finds unique for this period.     Agglomeration Processes in Ageing Societies

    This article investigates agglomeration processes in ageing societies by introducing anoverlapping generation structure into a New Economic Geography model. Whether highereconomic integration leads to spatial concentration of economic activity crucially hinges onthe economies' demographic properties. While population aging as represented by decliningbirth rates strengthens agglomeration processes, declining mortality rates weaken them. This isdue to the fact that we allow for nonconstant population size. In particular, we show thatpopulation growth acts as an important dispersion force that augments the distributionaleffects on agglomeration processes resulting from the turnover of generations.JEL classification: R12, J10, F15, C6
