Imperial Science, Unified Forces and Boundary-Work: Geographical and Geological Societies in Vienna (1850–1925). Scientific societies are among the most influential modes of scientific organisation. Emerging as bourgeois associations, mainly in the second half of the nineteenth century, these societies saw themselves as communication platforms for scholars and practitioners from diverse educational backgrounds. The boom of scientific societies in the capital of the Habsburg Empire during a period of great economic upswing led to both disciplinary differentiation and an increase in membership. Associations such as the Imperial-Royal Geographical Society (1856), the Club of Geographers at the University of Vienna (1874) and the Geological Society (1907) brought together members from all the crownlands of the monarchy. At their height, these societies were among the leading European players in their field, holding and administering funds and running expeditions. The outbreak of World War One offered them new scope to innovate and adapt, but the political dynamics of its aftermath, together with the loss of financial reserves, the erosion of traditional research fields and the cessation of scientific exchange with non-German-speaking countries, ultimately caused their long-term decline. The crisis of bourgeois society in the 1920s was closely bound up with the crisis of the bourgeois scientific societies, which were increasingly dominated by state research institutions; subsequently, some of these societies became rallying points for political radicalism. Based on archival research and statistical analysis, this paper will examine the correlation of scientific and political processes between 1850 and 1925 and their impact on the empire’s geoscientific research landscape. Particular attention will be paid to (1) the relationship between associations, state and public in the context of imperial statehood, bourgeois self-empowerment and disciplinary transformations, and (2) the impact of regime change, territorial reconfiguration and social upheaval on the societies’ practices of knowledge production and dissemination after 1914

An augmented wavelet reconstructor for atmospheric tomography. ETNA - Electronic Transactions on Numerical Analysis
Atmospheric tomography, i.e., the reconstruction of the turbulence profile in the atmosphere, is a challenging task for adaptive optics (AO) systems for the next generation of extremely large telescopes. Within the AO community, the solver of first choice is the so-called Matrix Vector Multiplication (MVM) method, which directly applies the (regularized) generalized inverse of the system operator to the data. For small telescopes this approach is feasible, however, for larger systems such as the European Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), the atmospheric tomography problem is considerably more complex, and the computational efficiency becomes an issue. Iterative methods such as the Finite Element Wavelet Hybrid Algorithm (FEWHA) are a promising alternative. FEWHA is a wavelet-based reconstructor that uses the well-known iterative preconditioned conjugate gradient (PCG) method as a solver. The number of floating point operations and the memory usage are decreased significantly by using a matrix-free representation of the forward operator. A crucial indicator for the real-time performance are the number of PCG iterations. In this paper, we propose an augmented version of FEWHA, where the number of iterations is decreased by 50% using an augmented Krylov subspace method. We demonstrate that a parallel implementation of augmented FEWHA allows the fulfilment of the real-time requirements of the ELT
Die Protokolle des Salzburger Zucht‐ und Arbeitshauses 1784–1807. Beiträge zur Rechtsgeschichte Österreichs|Beiträge zur Rechtsgeschichte Österreichs Band 1 / 2021|
The ‘Zucht‐ und Arbeitshaus’ is “an institution in which vicious members of society are accustomed to a duty‐like behaviour through work and sternness […]”. This contemporary definition by Johann Christoph Adelung describes the main pillars that made such an institution. It remains open which persons were regarded as vicious members of society and with which work and punishment methods those affected were transformed. Writings straight from everyday life in the institution, such as the protocols of the ‘Salzburger Zucht‐ und Arbeitshaus’, could offer potential answers. In addition to describing the basic features of the workhouse system, there is another question that could be answered using the source material available: To what extent can mere administrative acts, including these protocols, help to draw conclusions about the social, political and economic circumstances of an area in a certain period of time? These two questions form the basis of the present research
