Carcass and non-carcass production of Priangan and Fat Tail sheep were studied at the Department of Animal Production, Faculty of Animal Science, Bogor Agricultural University. Six male Priangan and six male Fat Tailed lambs were killed at 17.5 kg slaughter weight. A similar number of both breeds were also killed at 25.0 kg. Priangan and Fat Tail of 18.483 ± 0,160 and of 18.583 ± 0.262 kg body weight were fasted 24 hours (water was allowed) and fasted body weight (slaughter weight) were 17.600 ± 0.089 and 17.490 ± 0.020 kg, respectively. Similarly, Priangan and Fat Tail of 26.190 ± 0.207 and 26.283 ± 0.349 kg were also fasted at the same treatment and slaughter weights were 24.914 + 0.183 and 24.890 ± 0.114 kg. Before killing, they were reared on a pelleted ration containing 73.3% TDN and 16% crude protein (100% dry matter basis). Those animals were killed and dissected. The results showed that there were no significant differences in the weight of carcass, organs and offals, except in the weight of head and tail at 17.5 kg (P < 0.05) and at 25.0 kg (P < 0.01). At 17,5 kg slaughter weight, Priangan (17600 ± 89 g) produced 47.10% carcass, 11.14% head and shank, 6.67% skin, 14.38% offals, 4.84% blood and 12.71% gut content; Fat Tail (17490 ± 20 g) produced 48.76% carcass, 9.20% head and shank, 7.00% skin, 13.38% offals, 4.08% blood and 11.99% gut content. At 25.0 kg slaughter weight, Priangan (24917 ± 183 g) produced 48.70% carcass, 10.14% head and shank, 6.90% skin, 12.90 offals, 5.03% blood and 12.12% gut content. Fat Tail produced 52.39% carcass, 8.39% head and shank, 7.00% skin, 13.11% offals, 4.19% blood and 10.61% gut content. Key words: Priangan sheep, carcas

Effect of low voltage electrical stimulation (LVES; 45 volt, 3 amps for approx 100 sec) and CaCl2 injection on sensory characteristic of mutton were evaluated. Six mutton were divided into 3 groups slaughtered. One carcass of each group was subjected to LVES treatment within 30 min postmortem (PM). After LVES, longissimi thoracis et lumborum muscles were removed and treated: without CaCl2 injection, CaCl2 injection (200 mM, 5% w/w) 2 h and 24 h PM. Samples were stored in a vacuum pack at 1 ± 10C. Results showed that LVES could be used to improve colour of meat. CaCl2 injection, especially without LVES produced smooth mutton texture. CaCl2 injection 24 hr PM without LVES decreased meat elasticity. LVES with CaCl2 injection 2 hr PM was the best treatment to produce fresh mutton with good sensory characteristic. Most of Holstein in Indonesia were imported from European countries which have temperate climate (13-25 0C). If those Holstein were kept under high temperature and high humidity and exposed to direct solar radiation, the cattles would be experienced with heat stress, resulted in decreasing appetite, increased water intake, decreased metabolism, increased catabolism, increased heat loss through evaporation, decreased hormone concentration in blood, increased body temperature, increased respiration and heart rate and behavioral changes. To reduce the heat stress can be achieved by environment modification, such as type of animal house construction, type of roof material selected for animal house and determination of animal housing height. The improvement of environmental condition was gained for maintaining the animal heat balance in steady state, due to reducing the thermoregulatory responses (i.e heart rate, respiration rate and mean body temperature). Controlling the heat stressed animals to lower thermoregulatory activities will improve their productivity. The birds were developed to be 16 groups (4 groups of TT and 4 groups of RR, with male and female lines, respectively). The mating was conducted between similar groups of population (TT vs. TT, and RR vs. RR) to obtain second generation. The change in metabolism such as Ca-ATPase activity and Nô-œmethylhistidine (Nô-MH), also selection response between generations were analyzed. Parameters of metabolism were subjected to statistical analysis of T-test to compare between productions characteristic (TT and RR), especially for second generation. Body weight was also statistically analyzed by the same method. Selection response in TT group (3.10% or 2.74%) was higher than that in RR group (1.20% or 1.13%). Metabolism aspect in the quails of second generation either rate of protein turnover or activity of bone Ca-ATPase enzyme showed the change toward the productivity specification. Rate of muscle protein synthesis was higher and enzyme activity of Ca-ATPase was lower in group of TT population than those in group of RR population. The objectives of the present study were to estimate the genetic distance and to determine the discriminant variables among fighting and meat types sheep of Garut (Garut sheep). A total of 413 heads of Garut sheep from five sub-populations were used in this study. Data were collected from the Regional Animal Research Center (BPPTD) as follows: 102 heads of common type sheep from Margawati (M), 69 heads from meat type sheep from Wanaraja (P), 72 heads of meat type from Sukawening (D), 81 heads of fighting sheep from Wanaraja (T) and 89 heads of fighting sheep from Sukawening (A). Data obtained were analyzed by simple discriminant with SAS package program version 7.0 and MEGA2 program to get the construction of phenogram tree. The results showed that in general fighting sheep had body weights and body measurements significantly higher (P < 0.05) than meat type sheep. However they were almost the same as common type sheep Margawati. The length and width of ears, tail width and chest width were the most discriminant variables to determine the differences of fighting type and meat type sheep. The highest similarities between individuals inside the group were obtained from Margawati common type sheep (71.57%), followed by Wanaraja meat type sheep (69.57%), Sukawening meat type sheep (69.44%), Wanaraja fighting type sheep (69.14%) and Sukawening fighting type sheep (59.55%). The Wanaraja fighting type sheep (T) had the closest genetic distance (1.16) to the Sukawening fighting type sheep (A), while the longest genetic distance (6.17) was between the Wanaraja meat type sheep and the Margawati common type sheep. The phenogram tree showed that the Margawati common type sheep was outside Wanaraja and Sukawening fighting type and meat type sheep, but the genetic distances were closer for the Wanaraja and Sukawening fighting type sheep. The experiment was conducted to determine the optimum synchronization ratio of N-protein and fermented organic matter (OM) in the rumen for the purpose of ration formulation for ruminant animals, in order to improve efficiency of rumen microbial N synthesis and feed efficiency. Nylon bag technique was adopted to determine ruminal characteristic of protein and OM degradation of feedstuffs (forage and concentrate diet) for which the synchronized index of N-protein and fermented OM in the rumen might be determined. By randomized block design, twelve local cattle were arranged to four groups. Each group was fed three types of diet that was different in synchronization ratio of supplying N-protein and fermented OM in the rumen, namely 20 g N/kg OM (R20); 25 g N /kg OM (R25); and 30 g N /kg MO (R30). The diets had iso-energy and iso-protein contents and had the same synchronization index. The results showed that the type of diet had no effect (P>0.05) on intake and digestibility of nutrients, N retention, average daily gain (ADG), and feed efficiency. But R20 had better parameter values than those of R25 and R30. It might be concluded that the diet having a synchronization ratio of 20 g N/kg fermented OM in the rumen will generate more efficient protein synthesis of rumen microbes and feed efficiency. The optimal storage temperature for preserve boar semen is 17-18°C. The temperature fluctuations can decrease sperm viability. The aim of this study was to obtain a boar semen extender for Artificial Insemination (AI) at a certain distance area. The observation was based on the sperm viability in modified Beltsville Thawing Solution (BTS) extender in different storage, and the effect of storage system i.e.: room temperature (22°C) and styrofoam box (18°C) were conducted for this purpose. The research used a completely randomized design (CRD) with two factorial i.e.: BTS and M-BTS extender (F1), room temperature and styrofoam box (F2). Semen from three years old Yorkshire boars (n = 3) were collected twice a week by glove hand method. Semen characteristics and their quality were evaluated macro and microscopically. These semen were added with BTS and M-BTS extender up to fourfold volume (ratio 1 : 3). This is based on the assumption of AI dose of 2 - 3 x 109cells/80ml and the sperm motility and viability were evaluated every six hours for 24 hours observation. The results showed that fresh semen characteristics were good, with the percentage of sperm motility 65.56±2.55% and sperm viability of 87.70±2.87%. The best extender found in this experiment of 24 hours observation was BTS extender with sperm motility 53.33±3.33% in styrofoam box. In conclusion, BTS extender can maintain the quality of spermatozoa stored in styrofoam box for about 24 hours with sperm motility 40%-50%, and the styrofoam box can be used as an alternative container for insemination program in the field. The aim of this research was to measure the relationship of the pH value to the somatic cell count as a parameter of sub clinical mastitis detection. Two hundreds quarter milk samples were used in this research and the test (the pH value, IPB-1 mastitis test and Breed method) was done in parallel way. The results showed that 152 samples from 200 samples (76%) tested with Breed method came from the herds which suffered from sub-clinical mastitis and with IPB-1 test showed that 145 (72.5%) of the samples had positive reaction. Using pH meter, it showed that 44 samples (22 %) had pH > 6.75, presumed suffered from sub-clinical mastitis and 2 samples (1%) showed pH < 6.30 (6.25 and 6.28). At the same time, these two samples showed a negative reaction with IPB-1 test and had somatic cell count of 360,000/ml and 280,000/ml, each. It also showed that there was a close relationship between pH value and IPB-1 test. The conclusion of this research was that the measurement of pH value was not a sensitive method for detecting sub-clinical mastitis. It is well documented that productivity of workers is influenced by both internal and external factors. The objective of this study was to provide insights into motivation, job satisfaction and job productivity of Animal Husbandry Field Extension Workers (FEW). The analysis was carried out using the Spearman rank correlation. The respondents of the study were 36 FEW, in Sukabumi district, West Java. The results of the study showed that most of FEW were male, married, relatively old, and had more than three children. Most of them had a diploma certificate, had been participating in several trainings, had 20 years of working experience, and belong to third rank employee. It was found that all internal factors of FEW (achievement, recognition, job, and responsibility) had a positive correlation with job productivity. On the contrary, there were only two external factors, employment status and personal communication, which had a positive correlation with job productivity of FEW. Other external factors, including administration and policy, supervision, salary and reward, and working condition factors, were negatively correlated with job productivity of FEW. Finally, the findings also reveal evidence that three out of four job satisfactions (psychology, social, and physical condition) were positively correlated with work productivity of FEW whereas financial aspect was not. Bioconversion is a method to increase quality of high lignocellulose-containing feedstuffs. Fermentation occurs during bioconversion is influenced primarily by length of fermentation and mineral supplementation to the medium. This study was aimed at determining the effect of these two factors on dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF), and cellulose-to-lignin ratio of cocoa pod incubated with Phanerochaete chrysosporium. Twenty four treatments containing of 4 mineral supplementations (no mineral, Ca, Mn, and Ca+Mn) and 6 different lengths of fermentation (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 days) were designed randomly to 72 fermentation glass jars in a 4x6 factorial arrangement. Length of fermentation had significant effect on all parameters measured. Mineral significantly affected changes of DM and OM, NDF and ADF content, and cellulose-to-lignin ratio, but not DM and OM content. In conclusion, supplementation of Ca to cocoa pod incubated with P. chrysosporium for 15 days contributed positively (P < 0.05) to changes of OM (13.83%) and DM (11.30%). The cellulose-to-lignin ratio of 1.34 was the optimum result of Mn supplementation for 10 days incubation.
