Diversität in Bibliotheken - Wie gut sind Bibliotheken aufgestellt?

    Get PDF

Can’t Live With Them, Can’t Live Without Them: The Ambivalent Effects of Existential Outgroup Threat on Helping Behavior

    Get PDF
Social comparison theories suggest that ingroups are strengthened whenever important outgroups are weakened (e.g., by losing status or power). It follows that ingroups have little reason to help outgroups facing an existential threat. We challenge this notion by showing that ingroups can also be weakened when relevant comparison outgroups are weakened, which can motivate ingroups to strategically offer help to ensure the outgroups' survival as a highly relevant comparison target. In three preregistered studies, we showed that an existential threat to an outgroup with high (vs. low) identity relevance affected strategic outgroup helping via two opposing mechanisms. The potential demise of a highly relevant outgroup increased participants’ perceptions of ingroup identity threat, which was positively related to helping. At the same time, the outgroup’s misery evoked schadenfreude, which was negatively related to helping. Our research exemplifies a group's secret desire for strong outgroups by underlining their importance for identity formation

Incorporation and Deposition of Spin Crossover Materials into and onto Electrospun Nanofibers

    Get PDF
We synthesized iron(II)-triazole spin crossover compounds of the type [Fe(atrz)3]X2 and incorporated and deposited them on electrospun polymer nanofibers. For this, we used two separate electrospinning methods with the goal of obtaining polymer complex composites with intact switching properties. In view of possible applications, we chose iron(II)-triazole-complexes that are known to exhibit spin crossover close to ambient temperature. Therefore, we used the complexes [Fe(atrz)3]Cl2 and [Fe(atrz)3](2ns)2 (2ns = 2-Naphthalenesulfonate) and deposited those on fibers of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and incorporated them into core–shell-like PMMA fiber structures. These core–shell structures showed to be inert to outer environmental influences, such as droplets of water, which we purposely cast on the fiber structure, and it did not rinse away the used complex. We analyzed both the complexes and the composites with IR-, UV/Vis, Mössbauer spectroscopy, SQUID magnetometry, as well as SEM and EDX imaging. The analysis via UV/Vis spectroscopy, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and temperature-dependent magnetic measurements with the SQUID magnetometer showed that the spin crossover properties were maintained and were not changed after the electrospinning processes

Higher Plasma Creatinine Is Associated with an Increased Risk of Death in Patients with Non-Metastatic Rectal but Not Colon Cancer: Results from an International Cohort Consortium

    Get PDF
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is increasingly recognized as a heterogeneous disease. No studies have prospectively examined associations of blood metabolite concentrations with all-cause mortality in patients with colon and rectal cancer separately. Targeted metabolomics (Biocrates AbsoluteIDQ p180) and pathway analyses (MetaboAnalyst 4.0) were performed on pre-surgery collected plasma from 674 patients with non-metastasized (stage I–III) colon (n = 394) or rectal cancer (n = 283). Metabolomics data and covariate information were received from the international cohort consortium MetaboCCC. Cox proportional hazards models were computed to investigate associations of 148 metabolite levels with all-cause mortality adjusted for age, sex, tumor stage, tumor site (whenever applicable), and cohort; the false discovery rate (FDR) was used to account for multiple testing. A total of 93 patients (14%) were deceased after an average follow-up time of 4.4 years (60 patients with colon cancer and 33 patients with rectal cancer). After FDR adjustment, higher plasma creatinine was associated with a 39% increase in all-cause mortality in patients with rectal cancer. HR: 1.39, 95% CI 1.23–1.72, pFDR = 0.03; but not colon cancer: pFDR = 0.96. Creatinine is a breakdown product of creatine phosphate in muscle and may reflect changes in skeletal muscle mass. The starch and sucrose metabolisms were associated with increased all-cause mortality in colon cancer but not in rectal cancer. Genes in the starch and sucrose metabolism pathways were previously linked to worse clinical outcomes in CRC. In summary, our findings support the hypothesis that colon and rectal cancer have different etiological and clinical outcomes that need to be considered for targeted treatments

Ukrainian Refugees in Germany: Evidence From a Large Representative Survey

    Get PDF
This study describes the first wave of the IAB-BiB/FReDA-BAMF-SOEP Survey on Ukrainian Refugees in Germany, a unique panel dataset based on over 11,000 interviews conducted between August and October 2022. The aim of the IAB-BiB/FReDA-BAMF-SOEP Survey is to provide a data-infrastructure for theory-driven and evidence-based research on various aspects of integration among Ukrainian refugees in Germany, the second most important destination country in the EU after Poland, hosting over a million people who arrived in Germany shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Based on the survey, this study also provides first insights into demographic, educational, linguistic, occupational, and social characteristics of this population. The analyses revealed that the refugee population comprised mostly young and educated individuals, with a significant proportion of females without partners and female-headed separated families. While German language skills were limited, about half of Ukrainian refugees had attended or were attending language courses. However, the integration process faced significant challenges, as the participation of children in day-care was relatively low, and the self-reported life satisfaction was markedly below the average of the German population. The study highlights the need for targeted policy measures to address such issues. Additionally, policies may aim at harnessing the high potential of the Ukrainian refugees for the German labor market. Given that a substantial proportion would like to stay in Germany permanently, policymakers should take note of these findings and aim to facilitate their long-term integration process to ensure that these refugees may thrive in Germany

Ukrainian refugees in Germany: Escape, arrival and everyday life

    Get PDF
The Institute for Employment Research (IAB), the Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB), the Research Centre of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, and the Socio-Economic Panel at DIW Berlin have surveyed 11,225 Ukrainian refugees in Germany from August to October 2022. The survey can be extrapolated to the refuge population who has arrived since the beginning of the war at February 24, 2022, to June 8, 2022, in Germany. The results show that the majority of refugees from Ukraine report war as the main flight motive, while personal contacts and respect of human rights were the main reasons to choose Germany as a destination. Roughly 80 percent of adult refugees are women. About the half lives together with minor-aged children, about 80 percent without a partner. Some 70 percent have tertiary education degrees. Yet, only 4 percent report good or very good, another 14 percent fair German language proficiency. About 50 percent visits or has already completed a German language class. 17 percent are employed, with some 70 percent of those performing qualified jobs. The health status of the refugee population is good, but life satisfaction well below the German population average. Above one-third of the refugees plans to stay in Germany forever or for several years, about one-third aim to leave Germany by the end of war, while 27 percent are not yet certain about their staying perspectives.

I am all EARS: Using open data and knowledge graph embeddings for music recommendations

    Get PDF
Music streaming platforms offer music listeners an overwhelming choice of music. Therefore, users of streaming platforms need the support of music recommendation systems to find music that suits their personal taste. Currently, a new class of recommender systems based on knowledge graph embeddings promises to improve the quality of recommendations, in particular to provide diverse and novel recommendations. This paper investigates how knowledge graph embeddings can improve music recommendations. First, it is shown how a collaborative knowledge graph can be derived from open music data sources. Based on this knowledge graph, the music recommender system EARS (knowledge graph Embedding-based Artist Recommender System) is presented in detail, with particular emphasis on recommendation diversity and explainability. Finally, a comprehensive evaluation with real-world data is conducted, comparing of different embeddings and investigating the influence of different types of knowledge
