Primary students’ participation in school based mathematical reasoning practices: Coordinating reciprocal teaching and systemic functional linguistics to support reasoning in the Swedish context
The foreign language (FL) classroom can be an anxious environ- ment where students feel uncomfortable having to communicate in a language in which they feel inadequate and have little practice. Low self-efficacy in skill-specific tasks is oftentimes the culprit. While there are a number of factors involved in successful language learning, this study examines how practice affects students’ sense of self-efficacy in the foreign language classroom. Using self-efficacy theory and design-based research, this qualitative study ‘flipped’ the classroom to focus on student input and output practice in class with grammar instruction video-recorded for homework. Data were recursively collected and analyzed from ten courses over three semesters. Classroom observations and reflection were triangulated with interviews and focus groups. Findings suggest that practice and self-efficacy in the FL classroom are indeed linked and that other factors such as peer familiarity and grading also play a role. The paper concludes with implications for language learning and teaching
Enregisterment del rotacismo, del ceceo y de la fricativa en Andalucía Occidental: El caso de la serie de televisión Allí Abajo
This contribution is based on the hypothesis that metalinguistic discourses of recent decades, among others consolidated by cultural activities such as cinema or television series, have supported the discursive construction of Andalusian Spanish as a variety of European Spanish. Certain salient phonetic-phonological features of western Andalusian Spanish are used to create a discursive linguistic reality. To get a profound analysis of these processes, the theory of enregisterment forms the theoretical basis of this contribution, since it guides in particular to a better understanding of the social production of linguistic varieties – also in the cultural domain – and their social classification in the speech community in general. This paper analyzes how enregisterment works through the realization of phonetic-phonological features – ceceo, rhotacism and spirantization – by fictitious protagonists of the television series Allí Abajo and through their metalinguistic commentaries.

Following the Bear: the revival of Plough Monday traditions and the performance of rural identity in the East Anglian fenlands
In Whittlesey and Ramsey, two market towns in the East Anglian fenlands, farm labourers led a ‘Straw Bear’ through the streets; one of an array of Plough Monday customs marking the start of the agricultural year. The practice seems to have come to an end in the early 20th century, when it was forbidden by a police inspector as a form of begging. Yet what was had come to be seen as an unruly and unsavoury practice was renovated as a valued form of cultural heritage in 1980, in the wake of the wider folk ‘revival’ in the United Kingdom. The performance of Straw Bear festivities gives us a vantage point on the cultivation of rural identity in contemporary Britain, allowing us to ask what it means to live in, belong to, and act within a landscape completely transformed by mechanised arable farming. I follow Abner Cohen in attending to the relationship between symbolic potential and political power within the carnivalesque, tracing in particular the way that revived traditions become deployed and read in the context of contemporary ‘culture wars’. At the same time, I draw on Turner in his emphasis on the socially generative potential of misrule. In the revived Straw Bear celebrations, we see a striking invention of tradition in the context of changing social and economic norms in rural England. Yet alongside the apparent gentility of revived folk customs, as evening falls, folk musicians and their activities give way to the convergence of young people from the surrounding region for a night of drunken revelry around the town. This paper explores the different facets of this modern midwinter custom: as heritage and as night of joy in the cold of winter; as cultural spectacle and as people throwing up in the streets; as continuation and as invention
On reflexive and participatory approaches in digital preservation today. Interview with Samantha Lutz
Digitisation brings new demands and new challenges to the realm of cultural heritage, particularly around voice and preservation. Natalie Harrower is Director of the Digital Repository of Ireland (DRI), a national digital repository for archiving, preserving and providing access to Ireland’s cultural heritage, humanities and social sciences data. In the interview, Natalie Harrower examines current developments in digital preservation from a practical perspective, offering concrete examples that range from technical and legal challenges and participatory memory practices to future challenges of digital preservation such as creative practices of reuses, economies of sharing cultural heritage and preservation of digitally-born materials. Against this backdrop, she addresses ethical issues and the question of cultural sustainability, spanning the poles of remembering and forgetting and diverging preservation strategies in today’s digital universe.
To adopt or reject? Testing the robustness of a principle-based scenario for guiding effective student questioning
Guiding student questioning to become effective for attaining curriculum objectives is a challenge for many teachers. In two previous studies a principle-based scenario was developed in two primary schools to enhance teacher guidance of effective student questioning. This study aims to determine to what extent the scenario for teacher guidance is robust and transferrable to other teachers in different primary school settings. To test its robustness, 15 trainers introduced the scenario in 23 primary schools to 103 teachers. After teachers completed a six-week trial, they indicated in a questionnaire if they were inclined to adopt, adapt, or reject the scenario for future use. Results show that approximately 80% of all teachers would like to adopt the scenario. About 55% of the teachers see opportunities to adapt the scenario to their needs. However, about 20% of the teachers feel not yet able to judge if and how to adapt, having completed only one trial. The conclusion is that most teachers, despite differences in age, gender, grade, experience and school contexts, are willing and able to guide effective student questioning with the help of the scenario. From a theoretical point of view, this study provides further insight in how successful implementation can supported by a principle-based design
