The Establishment of Gwǝlt and Rim Landholdings in Eighteenth-Century Gondärine Churches with a Special Focus on Ḥamärä Noḫ Śälästu Mǝʾǝt Däbr
Get PDFThe Ethiopian kings of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries established churches endowed with large estates. The gwǝlt charter founding these estates conferred tax and jurisdictional privileges on the beneficiaries for the administration of the churches. On the land given as gwǝlt , individual holdings known as rim were distributed to clerics. The study defines the economic and social contexts in which the foundation of both gwǝlt and rim occurred and shows that such grants were a manifestation of the king’s prerogatives and that the creation of ecclesiastical holdings disturbed existing social status and entitlements to land. In a comprehensive analysis the study considers land documents from Gondärine churches, with an emphasis on the Golden Gospel of the church of Ḥamärä Noḫ. The commentaries of the Fǝtḥa nägäśt, composed in the same period as the Gondärine land documents, will serve to explain the legal framework of gwǝlt and rim as applied in the eighteenth century in regards to customary Gondärine practices. This study of gwǝlt and rim reveals landholding practises whereby several rights coexisted on the same land, a fundamental aspect of Ethiopian land tenure which continued until the Revolution of 1974
A Short Apocalyptic Text Based on the Prophecy of Ezra (Esdras Salathiel)
Get PDFThe main themes of the text, occasionally ascribed to Ezra (Salathiel), are the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, the end of the world, the future rulers of Ethiopia, and the honouring of the Sabbaths. It is cast in the spirit of 4 Ezra, quoting it and Jubilees occasionally and extensively. As in 4 Ezra, its author is interested in knowing and declaring the future to call the faithful to observe the law and the ordinances. Reckoning the time by cycles, aqmar, provides him the revelation of future events ‘with exact dates’. The text, composed before the sixteenth century, is one more source of Gǝʿǝz apocalyptic literature. The article is an edition and translation of it as preserved in EMML 6429, fols 9v–39r

Get PDFA description of the collection of Ethiopian manuscripts in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Munich, can be found in the volumes of the Union Catalogue of Oriental Manuscripts in Germany (Verzeichnis der orientalischen Handschriften in Deutschland, VOHD). However, by 2016, the library’s holdings had been augmented by a further twenty Ethiopian manuscripts: some were donations, but most had been purchased atauctions. They are presented in this article according to the rules of the VOHD. Of the four Psalters, Cod. aethiop. 179, probably dating from the sixteenth century based on paleographic criteria, should be highlighted. Furthermore there are seven parchment scrolls and two leporello manuscripts. Also worth mentioning is a Senkessār for the second part of the year, as well as a Deggwā and several other manuscripts, all withillustrations that have been added at a later date to the original text but which have a characteristic style or use wellknown motifs. Cod. aethiop. 173 is also interesting since there are not many other such manuscripts, though at first sight the title ʿEnzira sebḥat simply suggests a common hymn

Sie zeichnet dazu einen historischen Überblick über die Geschichte des Instituts und die Verwobenheit und Auseinandersetzung mit den Möglichkeiten von ›Materialität‹ als Zugang zur Kulturforschung. Die anfängliche Verknüpfung des Instituts mit dem Museum für Hamburgische Geschichte und die daraus folgende Fokussierung auf Sachkulturforschung werden in dem Zusammenhang thematisiert. Deutlich wird aber auch der Zusammenhang zwischen den Forschungsinteressen der jeweiligen Forscher*innen und den strukturellen und epistemischen Bedingungen ihrer Zeit.

Sabine Kienitz writes an overview over the history of the institute and the initially close connection to the Museum of the History of Hamburg. She, furthermore, clarifies the connection between the research interests concerning material culture of researchers at the institute now and the structural and epistemical conditions of their time

En effet, qu’ils soient auteurs reconnus ou simples journalistes sportifs, plusieurs écrivains se sont emparés des opportunités éditoriales de l’époque pour raconter des histoires de rugby. Au-delà de leur caractère anecdotique ou promotionnel, ces dernières constituent une véritable source d’informations pour étudier la démocratisation d’un sport qui, à Paris comme dans les grandes villes de province, encourageait la noblesse du jeu et l’élégance de ses champions par-delà les rivalités et autres soupçons d’amateurisme marron. Toutefois, la littérature étant aussi un moyen de dire et d’interroger l’expérience du premier conflit mondial, certains romanciers ont rapproché métaphoriquement le rugby et la guerre pour mieux réinterroger, a posteriori, le sens du « Grand Match ».
