This article is based on long-term research conducted concerning ‘dreams of the future’ of disadvantaged pupils at a secondary school. He analyses the dreams of this group to find out about their imaginations of the ‘future’ and reflects on the constitutive role of hope and optimism. With this method the author manages to identify conditions for participation and claiming a stake in society
Rolland (1931)
This article examines the rugby novel Le Taureau de Mazarguesby R.-M. Rolland, published in 1931. The aim is to show that the protagonist Jean is portrayed as a sports hero, whose heroic status, however, is fundamentally marked by his ambivalence. By serving the constitutional conditions of the heroic and at the same time problematizing them the narrative constructs this broken heroic figure. The categories “hero makers”, “audience“, “heroic deed” and “heroization” are the focus of the investigation. The article proposes to read Rolland\u27s novel as a story of alienation under the sign of heroism.L’article analyse le roman de rugby Le Taureau de Mazarguesde R.-M. Rolland, publié en 1931. Affektive Transmission.
French moral philosopher Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592) and his ‘covenant daughter’, Marie de Gournay (1565-1645), shared a special bond. When the 30 years younger, until then unknown woman and her idol met in Paris in 1588, they forged an alliance beyond blood ties, calling each other ‘spiritual father (père d’alliance) and ‘spiritual daughter’ (fille d’alliance). When Montaigne visited Marie de Gournay in her family’s home in Picardie, the father-daughter couple worked together on the so called “Bordeaux copy” (1588) of Montaigne’s main work, Les Essais. After her ‘father’ died, Marie de Gournay became a writer in her own right as well as the editor, preserver and defender of Montaigne’s oeuvre. Surprisingly enough, although she had never been officially adopted by Montaigne, his fille d’alliance was accepted as Montaigne’s spiritual ‘heir’ by his family (his widow and his natural daughter) as well as by the members of the Republic of Letters. However, scholarly attempts to define this unique relationship between the elderly writer and the young erudite had to cope with the nonexistence of historical and juridical sources. On a textual level, this unique bond is echoed through the metaphor of the text as a textual, spiritually born child, both in Montaigne’s as well as in Marie de Gournay’s texts. A comparative study of Les Essais and of certain paratexts written by Marie de Gournays shows that the ‘spiritual child’ is a an intra- and transtextual phenomenon that links the texts of ‘father’ and ‘daughter’. In this paper, I argue that Montaigne’s Essais-born metaphor of the textual and spiritual child has been \u27inherited\u27 by Marie de Gournay as a social practice, fostering the affective and posthumous transmission of their main works, les Essais and les Advis, as spiritual legacies
Your Dream Home Awaits You: Engaging with People and Place through Painting in an Australian Public Housing Precinct Undergoing Renewal
This article presents an example of how convergent art–anthropology methodologies provided insights into the concepts of house and home in a large public housing precinct scheduled for demolition. Drawing is discussed as both a means to experience embodied understandings of place, as well as a method for initial engagement with the residents of the housing precinct. A series of oil paintings are presented, along with an exegetical discussion of how the paintings elicited ongoing conversations and interviews. The research process demonstrates how the artworks produced became a point of discussion, around which entangled emotions of anxiety could be expressed, as people were relocated to replacement housing. The final paintings aim to offer the residents and broader community an alternative representation of the houses, as a platform to consider the issues of housing affordability, gentrification and homelessness in our cities
‘From Mangoes to Apples’: Exploring Belonging in New Tehri
When the Tehri Dam in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand submerged the town of Tehri, the locals found themselves turned into visthapit (the ‘displaced’). This new position, a consequence of dam induced displacement and relocation to new geographies, triggered recollections of their previous lives in Tehri. Often recalled as a local cultural centre for surrounding villages, the old town appears in daily conversations of its former residents. By discussing Tehri, the oustees return to a place they can now experience only tangentially. This article explores how displacement and belonging come to be expressed through a place that has no existing cartographic coordinates – a place living in memories. My ethnographic work in the town of New Tehri, a namesake built for the purpose of relocation, guides these arguments
‘This isn\u27t Canada, it’s Home’: Re-claiming Colonized Space through the Host-Guest Relationship
The settler-colonial Canadian nation-state envisions national parks as places for citizens to recreate ideals of wilderness and the colonial frontier. In Canada, an idealized wild nature has become a central motif in settler-Canadian visions of home with outdoor recreation a hallowed pastime that has become a cornerstone to national identity. Yet as indigenous peoples increasingly assert their claims to territory, the state\u27s spatial designations and Canadian nationalist landscape narratives are challenged and complicated. In 1992, Peter and Monique Knighton made the decision to leave the main reserve where the Ditidaht people had been consolidated by the state in the 1960s, and return to Qua-ba-diwa, their ancestral home. However, Qua-ba-diwa, which the state calls Indian Reserve Number 6, lies within the boundaries of the West Coast Trail Unit in Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. Since their move to Qua-ba-diwa, the Knighton family have built cabins, sold food, and provided shelter to tens of thousands of hikers, often to the consternation of parks officials. In a state where First Nations people have been continuously removed from their homes, taking on the role of territorial host through the provision of hospitality becomes a political act. I discuss the Knightons’ strategies of resistance to state efforts to confine their home to tourist-oriented visions of a wild Canadian nature, as well as the wider implications of their experiences for understanding the dissonance between indigenous and settler-Canadian conceptions of the same territory
