How to Start Teaching Amharic Verbs?

    Get PDF
The Amharic verbal system—with its complexity in terms of form, meaning, and usage—poses a great challenge to both teacher and learner. Although the majority of Amharic textbooks give due consideration to the teaching of verbs, the activities that they offer only allow the student to get familiar with forms, in isolation from their meaning and context of use.The aim of this paper is to propose a way of introducing learners to the Amharic verbal system while focusing on form in communicative interactions. I argue that the system can be introduced, traditionally, with the perfective form, and in contexts involving meaningful communication. I also suggest a more student-centred (inductive) approach to presenting and explaining grammar in general and to the verbal system in particular. My discussion is illustrated by an exemplary unit from a course book that targets two perfective forms, third singular masculine and third singular feminine

Einleitung: Außenseiterdiskurse zwischen den Zeiten, Kulturen und Medien

    Get PDF
Outsiders – individuals or small groups accused of violating the rules by influential social elites or large groups and therefore excluded from them – seem to be omnipresent in modern western societies that nowadays are increasingly shaped by political, religious, and social crises. The protectionist nationalism, resurgent in many countries and accompanied by violence between religious and/or ethnic groups, but also the looming backlash against emancipatory movements and egalitarian changes within a society are just some of the current symptoms of this boom of outsiders. Unquestionably, there have always been outsiders in both older and more recent history: The early modern witch hunt with a clearly misogynistic orientation, the ethnically motivated expulsion of the Native Americans as well as the Holocaust in the Nazi era – all these waves of persecution can be characterized as ideologically motivated campaigns of established groups against stigmatized and rigorously marginalized minorities: In all manifestations, power structures are at work that have left their traces in the diverse and competing discourses of outsiders and about outsiders, to which this dossier is dedicated

On the relation of coloniality and masculinities in Namibia

    Get PDF
The following is an essay that offers a critical view on the dominant gender studies’ concepts and utilizes theory from black and black masculinities studies in conjunction with the implications from the coloniality of power. The text will later touch on different aspects of black male experiences and organizational traits of Namibian masculine organization. Taking into consideration the immense transformations that were provoked by colonial occupation in the area of sexuality and identity, I intend a holistic approach that combines a critical view on capitalism and modernity under the light of the different dimensions of coloniality. As a contrast, ancestral Afrikan cornerstones are thematized as political points of articulation on which Afrikan masculinities and body-type in general can be renewed upon
