Belonging and friction – how tradition is negotiated within two Pentecostal congregations in post-colonial Windhoek, Namibia
Religion has the potential to preserve collective memory and can therefore establish belonging. In colonial and imperial settings, religion was often used as a legitimation of inequalities and therefore as tool of oppression. At the same time, religion, and especially Pentecostal belief systems, can be employed as politicized and de-colonizing efforts in struggles of liberation and empowerment. In Windhoek, a distinction is drawn between the so called “traditional” mainline churches, which are pre-dominantly Protestant and the Pentecostal ones. Main markers of distinctions are worship practices. It can lead to a sense of belonging, but on the other hand to frictions with members of mainline congregations. Within this discourse the meaning of “tradition” is negotiated by members of Pentecostal congregations. In this paper, the different meanings, and consequences of the use of the word “tradition” in the context of pentecostal believe systems in Windhoek will be shown
During the interwar period, the Olympic movement have difficulties to integrate women and workers into its midst. These are structured into national and international federations that organised alternative games to defend the legitimacy of women’s sport and promote the worker’s sport culture. This article proposes to consider the social, cultural and political dimension of this competitions by taking Latin Europe as a framework for analysis. The organisation of the games reveals the link between the associative, institutional and political network and the importance of sports infrastructures. The analysis of the results and the composition of the delegation supports a comparative history of sports margins in countries with different political trajectories. As a field for sports expression of the margins, alternative games bring out fears and disapproving speeches and reveal the social and political tensions of the interwar period : the place of women, the struggle of worker’s movements against fascism.
Outline of a holistic design-based research model for higher education
Design-Based Research (DBR) is not yet an established methodological framework in the context of higher education; nevertheless, it is increasingly used in projects in order to develop and explore new teaching/learning methods or scenarios and being taught in degree programs. The article presents the outline of a holistic DBR model and unfolds its construction in several steps based on practical experiences in applying DBR by means of existing models. The DBR cycle is visualized as a circle with five semantic fields; the choose modelling especially considers different forms of part-whole relationships in the DBR process. The model is also used to reflect on methodological issues in DBR and to consider the role of design objects

Among the historical outsider figures, the witch occupies a prominent position. As a representative of heterodox beliefs, she is persecuted by the Catholic Church without any mercy and, due to her often deviant behavior – for example her extraordinary knowledge – she is excluded from society by the mass of the rural population. The article reveals the outsider status of women accused of being witches as a social construct, taking into account the early modern context on the one hand and a modern TV series, El ministerio del tiempo, on the other. The analysis of historical sources and the episode “Tiempo de hechizos” shows how rumors are created and used. In addition, the complexity of the witch’s image is taken into account: As the episode makes clear, the witch can fulfill both roles in the dispute of interpretation: that of the victim and that of the offender. SWAPO and the appropriation of history. Memory politics and resulting conflicts of remembrance in the post-colony
This paper illustrates the significance of memory culture in the post-colony. The analyses of the “Independence Memorial Museum” in Windhoek will show different aspects of Namibian memory culture and how the SWAPO dominated government uses history to define a national Namibian identity – an approach that leads to tensions between the government and several communities, like the Nama and the German-speaking Namibians. Their conflicts with the state will be discussed in the cases of the Witbooi Bible and the Bismarck Street, and shown how they are connected with questions about property, heritage, and identity in the post-colonial setting
