The article suggests that the inscription known as RIÉ 277 might be a Hellenistic inscription of the period of Ptolemy II Philadelphus. This interpretation is based on a revision of the main hypotheses concerning the geographical centre suggested by the text

Cultural Creativity and Transnational Belonging: A Glimpse on Transnational Research in Ethiopia and Beyond

The three books under review provide different approaches to North-East African transnational studies. However, their descriptions of migration and transnational life are unified in that they focus on the migrants not as mere victims of their plight but on their agency and creativity both during the process of migration and in the descriptions of their settling and making a new life

    Get PDF
Enzo Striano’s historical novel Il resto di niente (1986) deals with the life of 18th century poet and newspaper editor Eleonora de Fonseca Pimentel who is commemorated as the most prominent representative of the Neapolitan Republic of 1799. Executed by royalist repression after the Republic’s decline, she became a hero and patriotic martyr for Italy’s movement of national unification. Striano’s novel revises Fonseca Pimentel’s 19th century heroic image by portraying his protagonist as an intellectual outsider who eventually becomes aware of the futility of her political and social aspirations. This article examines the literary representations of Fonseca Pimentel as well as her importance as a point of reference for Naples’ intellectuals

Visual artistic interventions into contemporary post-colonial realities and potential futures in Namibia. A multivocal art-anthropology encounter

    Get PDF
Several artists have been occupied with the subject of decolonization in Namibia lately. By means of dialogue between five contemporary Namibian visual artists and one anthropologist, in this article we thematize exemplary perspectives on and interventions into postcolonial realities. Dialogues about selected artpieces and additional subjects like healing of past wounds, the Afrofuture and arts potential to reveal social complexities expose visibly how artists intervene very differently into undoing colonialism. It illustrates artistic suggestions for a future that opens up a cultural space on earth for Black peoples belonging, a post-racial world which is not subverted, devalued and discriminated aginst, and a space for the celebration of the uniqueness and innovation of Black or/and African culture. We thus highlight arts capacity to expose complex nuances, associate ruptures, challenge the viewer, and offer some sort of reorientation. The exposed and discussed artpieces are able to open up new views which are truthful about a postcolonial moment in time

The Epistemological Relevance of Case Studies as Narratives in Design-Based Research

    Get PDF
In the context of empirical-phenomenological research various text products are created. Practitioners develop concepts, methods, techniques, etc. to solve certain problems that have arisen in their workplace. Actors of science accompany these problem-solving processes and support them by developing materials or scientific inputs. In addition, they strive to understand the field of practice and to grasp its structures and (interpretation) patterns. In order to make this possible a knowledge management is necessary with the help of which the text products resulting from the research and development process are produced and interpreted (Emmler 2015). Here, the importance of the case study[1] for the development of (new) knowledge is analysed. Normally, case studies are only considered to be by-products created during DBR. However, we believe that case studies do not only serve as an instrument for communicating project content to others, but are a medium for the researchers themselves to ascertain their own learning processes that take place in the exploration of the field of research. This paper aims to be the initial point for a methodological discussion on the thesis that (a) case studies as narrative text products contribute to an understanding of phenomena as underlying structures of the field of practice and that (b) they are one part of a two-fold research process in which they are the basis for the reflection of experiences. Therefore, we invite you to follow us on a journey to the discipline of arts, especially to Walter Benjamin, a famous writer and translator who, in the year 1923, discovered the differences in writing a poem and translating into another language. Both processes ask for writing competences which at first glance seem to be very similar, but at the second reveal their diametrical opposition. We suggest to adopt Benjamin’s explanations to the writing processes in DBR. In DBR it is the world of science on the one hand and the field of practice on the other that make a translation necessary: the languages applied in both fields differ, although the people working there might all belong to one and the same nationality which might allow them to communicate with the people from the other “world”. However, this does not mean that researchers understand the practice and the emerging phenomena per se. A translation between the worlds is necessary. For this, the case study is the first step.

    Get PDF
From its world premiere during the 1990s, anime and manga began to conquer all markets, and especially the last and largest that still resisted them, the United States. Our objective here is to trace some initial lines of research in which we propose to approach the phenomenon, and in particular, its impact on the Argentine market. From the existing bibliography it is possible to verify the dominant presence of imported manganime in the country, but also differences with respect to the most studied Anglo-Saxon examples. Our hypothesis maintains that although the diffusion and success of Japanese cultural products has been a global issue, the realization in each market was tied to particularities specific to each case, from the history of the cultural industry in each country to the socio-cultural conditions that informed the appropriation.
