    Cultural Analysis in/of the Anthropocene

    Get PDF
Recalling George Marcus’s influential writing ›Ethnography In/Of the World System‹, this essay asks how cultural analysis needs to be conceptualized, practiced and infrastructured differently when it moves from a global to a planetary, late industrial frame. This contribution argues that ›the Anthropocene‹ is usefully understood as a particular way of making environmental sense within late industrialism – what industrialism has become as it has cohered, aged, ossified, degraded and retrenched over time, in different ways in different settings. The essay calls for cultural analysis of the Anthropocene as a scientific concept, environmental dynamic, representational challenge and prompt to action in different settings. It also pleads for interdisciplinary collaboration (with cultural analysts in formative roles) and for investment in technical infrastructure to underpin the cultural analysis needed to go forward.Recalling George Marcus’s influential writing ›Ethnography In/Of the World System‹, this essay asks how cultural analysis needs to be conceptualized, practiced and infrastructured differently when it moves from a global to a planetary, late industrial frame. S9_2 Curating (Counter-)Memories. A plea for conceptual emancipation

    No full text
This contribution advocates emancipating the concept of curating from strictly museal contexts and extending it to various other formats of representation that deal with mnemotic fields. Using some examples from Bucharest, the importance of extra-institutional remembrance and reappraisal discourses are traced, which curate public space with counter-memories and, in view of the hesitant public reappraisal, make an important contribution from a civil society perspective

PC_3 Anonymity-Sunset-Dance-Party: On Other Selves and other Others

    No full text
Anonymity-Sunset-Dance-Party provides a commentary on the essays ›Anonymität Tanzen‹ by Paula Helm and ›Crypto Parties‹ by Linda Monsee. It draws on Whitehead\u27s metaphor of the sunset, as an event that defies the bifurcation of nature, and the empirical material from the two essays to suggest that anonymity practices do not merely obscure identity but radically affect and potentially broaden subject formations. In doing so, it speaks to a politics of anonymity that goes beyond questions of identification.  Anonymity-Sunset-Dance-Party provides a commentary on the essays ›Anonymität Tanzen‹ by Paula Helm and ›Crypto Parties‹ by Linda Monsee. The analysis covers the practices and elements of knowledge stemming from superstition and conspiracy theory, to avoid risks. The focus lies on the practices of action. Superstition and conspiracy theory are thus becoming tangible as cultural techniques of risk avoidance
