‘On a Hot Day in the Field . . . ’: − The Art of Writing Ethnographic Vignettes
Get PDFLong-term and in-depth ethnographic fieldwork is at the very heart of almost every anthropological study. Whilst in the field, the researcher engages deeply over a long period of time with informants and their lifeworlds. These intense encounters form the basis for the analytical results of the study and as such must be processed and made accessible for the prospective reader. Many ethnographers do so by using ethnographic vignettes. Vignettes are narrative descriptions of particular scenes, placed within the main text. The name might suggest that they are mere adornments, but they should rather be understood as tools by which to grasp analytical conclusions. Through them, the reader shares the experiences of the researcher and can even indirectly witness important moments of insight. But how does one write a good vignette? What should it entail? This paper addresses these questions by reviewing the literature on vignettes and drawing on the author’s own experiences

Lingua nustrale: Überlegungen zur Situation des Korsischen in Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft
Get PDFKorsisch ist die Sprache der Korsen – mehrheitlich in Korsika lebend, teilweise aber auch in Italien, in Frankreich, auf Sardinien. Die Sprecherzahlen variieren zwischen ca. 86.000 und 300.000. Trotz der geringen Sprecherzahlen ist Korsisch in mehrfacher Hinsicht von Interesse. Italienischer Dialekt, Minderheitensprache oder Teil der sogenannten Romania Nova? Diese Frage lässt sich nur unter Bezugnahme auf die historische Entwicklung beantworten. Korsika gehört heute politisch zu Frankreich, linguistisch ist es eher dem italo-romanischen Sprachraum zuzuordnen. Erst seit kurzem gewinnt das Korsische an Bedeutung. Durch seinen Aufstieg zur Schriftsprache wird es von manchen Forschern als neue romanische Sprache gesehen. Die detaillierteste Arbeit dazu liefert Ulrich Farrenkopf (2011). Auf den ersten Blick erscheint das Korsische relativ gut erforscht. Dennoch bleibt vieles widersprüchlich und es stellen sich zahlreiche Fragen. Vor dem Hintergrund von Methoden der vergleichenden Sprachwissenschaft und der Sprachwandelforschung konzentriert sich dieser Artikel auf die Substratdiskussion, das Konzept einer polyzentrischen Sprache sowie Hybriditätstheorien. Ziel dieser Studie ist die Re-Evaluation des Korsischen als eigenständige Sprache unter Einbeziehung möglicher künftiger Entwicklungen.Today, Corsica belongs politically to France. However, from a linguistic point of view it leans further to Italo-Romance or to today\u27s Italian. As a result, Corsican often falls through the linguistic schemata. Only recently has it gained importance from a pan-romance perspective due to its gradual rise to the status of a written language and is seen by some researchers as a new Romance language. Nonetheless, certain issues remain contradictory and numerous questions arise, which are the subject of this article. By applying methods of comparative linguistics and language change research, it focuses on the substrate discussion, the concept of a polycentric language and hybridity theories. Its aim is to re-evaluate the status of Corsican as a language, which in my opinion is an urgent desideratum, and to show perspectives for possible evolutions in the future
Cantando zuglú en español: El alumnado universitario marfileño de ELE entre aculturación e inculturación
Get PDFIn recent decades, the concept of interculturality has made its way into numerous fields, including that of language teaching. The exchange between people of different cultures is therefore seen as an essential value of globalization. At the same time, learning a new language is no longer considered solely in terms of acculturation; it is also a mode of inculturation in a mutual influence between the culture of the target language and the user’s own culture. In Ivory Coast, a francophone country in sub-Saharan Africa, the practice of zuglu in Spanish by SFL students represents a good example of linguistic and artistic inculturation, with zuglu being a local musical genre interpreted, in this case, in a foreign language.En los últimos decenios, el concepto de interculturalidad se ha abierto camino en numerosos campos, entre los cuales el de la didáctica de las lenguas. El intercambio entre personas de diferentes culturas se ve por lo tanto como un valor imprescindible de la globalización. Paralelamente, el aprendizaje de un nuevo idioma ya no se plantea únicamente en términos de aculturación; también es un modo de inculturación en una mutua influencia entre la cultura de la lengua meta y la propia cultura del usuario. En Costa de Marfil, un país francófono de África subsahariana, la práctica del zuglú en español por estudiantes de ELE representa un buen ejemplo de inculturación lingüística y artística, siendo el zuglú un género musical local interpretado, en este caso, en una lengua extranjera
