Potters, Warlords, and the End of the Islamic Republic
Get PDFThe town of Istalif, located in the plains of Parwan north of Kabul, and the political lives of the potters that live there, provide a rich ethnographic example for how even areas that supported the US invasion and the new government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan eventually became disillusioned with the rhetoric from these groups and their failure to produce real change in the lives of ordinary Afghans. The funding, both military and development, that poured into the country, particularly between 2009 and 2013, enriched a regional elite that was not interested in distributing wealth and political power, unlike more local leaders. This shift in the socio-economy of power in Istalif, and elsewhere in the country, helps explain the rapid collapse of the Islamic Republic, but also shows how local politics in Afghanistan reshaped US policy and its approach to intervention and empire

Get PDFMit Hilfe von empirischem Material stellt dieser Beitrag die Pup-Play-Community vor, deren Mitglieder sich selbst als Rollenspieler:innen begreifen und deren Praktiken auch Parallelen zu BDSM (= Bondage & Discipline, Dominance & Submission, Sadism & Masochism) und anderen Fetischen, also erotischen und/oder sexuellen Vorlieben, aufweisen. Dabei wird ein (kultur-)wissenschaftliches Forschungsdefizit identifiziert und gleichzeitig aufgezeigt, welche Herausforderungen und Chancen ethnografische Forschungen zu und mit Fetischen bieten.The article deals with a rather new and unresearched phenomenon called pup play. Sharing similarities with kinks like a preference for rubber, leather or BDSM, pup play sees itself as part of the broader fetish-spectrum, although it’s not inherently sexual. I present some key aspects of my own research with and within the German pup play community. Since there hasn’t been done a lot of research yet, I argue to take different aspects of kinks and affiliated practices into consideration for further academic research

Shifting Higher Vocational Education Teachers\u27 Response Toward Inward Affective Involvement in Ethical Dilemmas: Perspectives on the Design of Affective Learning Experiences to Inform Students’ Attitude Toward an Ethical Dilemma
Get PDFHigher vocational education teachers often encounter students who are inclined to view ethical dilemmas with an inner distance. If teachers’ input comes solely from the cognitive rather than the affective component, the interaction about the ethical dilemma between teacher and students will never progress beyond that level of inner distance. In our qualitative study, a total of 31 higher vocational education teachers from 6 educational programs were placed in an experiential position by presenting them with an ethical dilemma. This study aims to inform the analysis and exploration of the problem of our overall design-based research project. By asking them about this dilemma in teams, they were stimulated to respond to the ethical dilemma and to view it affectively. The results show that most teachers kept their distance from the ethical dilemma. Only when their fundamental beliefs were being challenged they seemed to assume some degree of inward affective involvement. This study contributes to theoretical and practical knowledge about stimulating inward affective involvement with ethical dilemmas so that students can develop a conscious value-expressive attitude

The work aims to describe the codicological disposition of the archival notes (i.e. arrangement of texts within the codex and its by-side folia), to provide their transcription, translation, and indexation. Paths of Cultural Transmission Between Syria and Ethiopia: About a Recent Book on Symbolic Interpretations
Get PDFThis contribution discusses Ralph Lee’s volume Symbolic Interpretations in Ethiopic and Early Syriac Literature, in particular his proposal about what were the channels of cultural transmission between Syriac and Ethiopic Christian literatures which could justify the consistent number of parallels found in the two poetical and liturgical traditions. Lee’s model used to explain these parallels is proved questionable, and an alternative hypothesis is offered: Ephrems’ poetry influenced later Syriac writers and liturgical traditions, which, in turn, experienced a long season of translation from Syriac to Arabic in a broad geographical area. As a consequence of this process, several streams of Ephremian tradition were transferred from the Arabic Christian literatures to the Ethiopic world after the twelfth century

Am Beispiel der Stadtbürger*innenkarte wird die Verflechtung der verschiedenen Elemente und Veränderungsprozesse innerhalb der Assemblage aufgezeigt.This paper examines to which extent the much-discussed assemblage perspective can be useful as heuristic for a cultural-analytical approach to new forms of citizenship, especially Urban Citizenship in contexts of social movements such as Solidarity Cities. Based on the example of city identification cards, it illustrates the interlacing of the different elements and processes of change within the assemblage
