Grindr Wars: Race, Caste, and Class Inequalities on Dating Apps in India and South Africa

The rapid digitalisation, neoliberalisation, and globalisation in countries like India and South Africa are profoundly transforming the sexual identities and sexual politics of these Global South contexts. In particular, dating apps like Grindr are changing the ways in which young gay men’s identities and relationships are formed, mediated, and embodied. In this article, I ethnographically explore the ways in which Grindr offers much needed visibility to young middle-class gay men in India and South Africa where powerful heteropatriarchies marginalise their sexualities and masculinities. Yet at the same time, the inequality that marks this digital and neoliberal expansion means that gay dating applications like Grindr also reproduce these very inequalities of race, caste, and class. I reveal in particular the growing commodification of gay identities and sexualities that is mediated through digital platforms, producing a hierarchy between ‘classy gays’ and ‘poor gays’. Desire itself becomes commodified wherein ‘poor gays’ are not desirable bodies or identities and the performance of class and consumption becomes central to claims of sexual desirability. Grindr’s geolocating technology allows middle-class gay men to discriminate against ‘poor gays’ through the spatial and urban inequalities of cities like Delhi and Johannesburg, further amplifying the inequalities of race, caste, and class. In this context, ‘Grindr Wars’ take place, which reveal the social and symbolic tensions, clashes, and violences that shape queer life in India and South Africa today

Benedetto Bordone, a 16th-century Italian cartographer and navigator, embodies the captivating charm of the history of cartography and navigation. Among his most renowned works is the Isolario (or The Book of Islands), first published in Venice in 1528. This collection of maps meticulously depicts the known islands of the time. Serving as a valuable guide for navigators and a remarkable geographical document, it is filled with detailed information on these wondrous islands, including their ports, climate, flora, and fauna, effectively making these mysterious lands accessible not only to readers but also to future explorers. Although today Bordone is primarily studied for his innovative use of polar projection in his maps, replacing the older Ptolemaic projection, the attention his work deserves as an inspiration for readers and navigators fascinated by unknown lands is surprisingly overlooked. This aspect becomes even more significant when considering the Isolario and its in-depth exploration of the islands of the New World.

The aim of this work is to present the main lines of the project Explorations and Proposals on Restorative Justice: An Encounter between Law, Psychology and Linguistics. The project arises in a context where, faced with a predominantly punitive legal system, the paradigm of restorative justice is gaining increasing traction. This movement entails scientific challenges to be considered within a framework of interdisciplinary and intersectoral research. The research paradigm is interpretivist, the theoretical approach is interdisciplinary, and the methodology is predominantly inductive and qualitative. The specific analysis of the project focuses on sociodiscursive representations of justice and responsibility in: 1) Facebook comments generated from posts related to criminal court cases, and 2) responses from participants in a restorative justice program (within the criminal justice system) to an open, anonymous questionnaire administered prior to their interaction with facilitators. Building upon (1) and (2), the project seeks to generate theoretical and practical proposals to: a) enhance the effectiveness of restorative justice programs, and b) raise awareness about the benefits of restorative justice, as it involves a different approach to addressing conflict and crime, as well as prevention methods aimed at social peace.

What would the literary history of Surrealism – and the historical avant-gardes as a whole – look like if it were consistently written from a gender perspective? Prompted by this question, these reflections focus on Surrealism between 1924 and 1925, when Breton asserted his version of the term Surrealism against those of competing actors and positioned it within the cultural field of his time through the publication of the first Manifeste du surréalisme (1924). Previous research on the self-positioning of Surrealism in its founding years has tended to marginalize or reduce to mere anecdote the function of ‚female‘ role models and antagonists. By contrast, this study takes three politically and/or artisti-cally engaged women – the anarchist Germaine Berton as well as the authors Aurel and Rachilde – as examples to show how the initially indistinct movement took on the specific contours of Surrealism through the symbolical appropriation or delegitimization of the political and cultural achievements of women activists and artists

Didier Daeninckx\u27s work spans more than three decades, with a multitude of novels, adaptations, short stories and more. We are going to focus on his output at the turn of the 1990s, marked by the end of the cycle of detective novels devoted to Inspector Cadin and the opening up of new genres (the short story, for example) and new themes (colonial culture, for example). Although Daeninckx was not an iconic representative of pop culture at the time, he nevertheless played an important role in the emergence of popular culture in the French literary and broader cultural landscape, in three different ways. From a generic point of view, Daeninckx helped give new impetus to the crime fiction genre, often referred to as para-literature, popular literature or mass literature. Moving away from the narrative characterizes the works of Agatha Christie or Gaston Leroux, and taking up and elaborating the darker vein of the roman noir developed by American novelists (Hammet, Chandler) and, in the French-speaking world, by Georges Simenon, Daeninckx writes his detective novels in a more realistic tone. Through this contemporary realist approach to detective fiction, Daeninckx is often working with memory, as the police investigation uncovers more than just the reasons and responsibilities behind an individual crime. While Daeninckx can thus target and denounce persistent political silences on the subject of collaboration or colonization, he also wants to write about a popular, working-class, socialist or communist culture that is in the process of disappearing. Finally, Daeninckx\u27s contribution to pop culture consists in opening up his work to adaptations in media characteristic of this culture. His aim is not to confine crime fiction to a search for symbolic capital within the field of restricted production, and he readily supports adaptations of his work for cinema, radio or comics.L’œuvre de Didier Daeninckx s’étend sur plus de trois décennies, avec une multitude de romans, d’adaptations, de nouvelles, etc.

How to align objectives of practitioners and scientists in DBR projects?

The interaction of scientists and practitioners is an essential component within Design-Based Research. Their close collaboration is assumed to hold the potential to increase the quality of both the innovative solution of educational problems and the generation of scientific knowledge. At the same time, there are some challenges associated with realizing this potential. This paper explores the opportunities and challenges of collaboration between researchers and practitioners in DBR projects. After a broader description of the problem situation, an in-depth discussion of the interests, perspectives, and frame conditions of the project actors from science and practice takes place using the example of the determination of project goals. The paper ends with the recommendation of design principles for the cooperation of scientists and practitioners

Is this systematic enough? Systematicity and openness in the implementation phase of DBR

Within Design Based Research (DBR), designing and implementing an intervention in order to improve an educational practice become part of the research process. This represents a unique feature of DBR. Though the innovative nature of DBR raises questions that have not yet been answered. This paper focuses on the extent to which systematicity, as principle of scientific research, and openness, as essential prerequisite of teaching practice, can be both fulfilled within the implementation phase of DBR studies. By presenting an investigation in the field of German as a foreign language I will offer an example of the challenges that researchers face regarding the tension between systematicity and openness. Besides the discussion about DBR standards, the aim of this paper is to delineate concrete requirements for the further development of this research approach. Guidelines helping researchers to use DBR appropriately represent an important step which could clarify still controversial aspects of DBR and also lead to an increase in its use. In this paper, I suggest that concepts discussed within the implementation research, like for instance Fidelity of Implementation, can help to develop such guidelines
