Kegunaan Slang Words di Game Online DOTA2

Slang Word can also used to identify a particular group, people who are not part of that group could be possibly recognize the identity of the group through their language, even though not all outsiders could understand could understand the Slang Word that they use. Slang words could have more than one meaning because of different communicative contexts, there are some factors that made the Slang Words have more than one meaning in each word. The objectives of the research are to find out Slang words used by State University of Malang’s students, their types and function, and why they are difficult for them.This game has been played by players from all over the world including Indonesia; most of players who play DOTA2 are students or workers. The researcher took 24 slang words that he has compiled on a questionnaire and then shared to some English literature students and Computer Engineering students of State University of Malang who registered on 2014.The result of the questionnaire from some students of State University of Malang would be analyzed by the researcher. The analyses focus on the highest percentage of answer then they were divided into three different groups.The researcher found some factors that caused miscommunication when the players use the Slang Words, such as, situation that happened in game, the different background knowledge of each player, and the point of view between the speaker and the listener. Finally, the researcher conclude that players of DOTA2 especially students of State University of Malang who play DOTA2 and try to socialize with other players of DOTA2 should learn more about the Slang Words, because Slang Words are usually used by players of DOTA2 to communicate. There are three ways that the players of DOTA2 especially the students could do to learn the meaning of each Slang word. The firs is looking at the situation that happened at the time the slang words are used because every situation could change the meaning of each slang words, the second is the learner should study more deeply about the vocabulary of Slang Words them self because most of Slang Words in DOTA2 are from English Language, and the third isplayers should understand the point of view of the speaker so there will not undergo misinterpretation
The Portrayals of Sexualized Korean Schoolgirls in Webtoon "Lookism"
ABSTRACTMass media, especially comics, has exposed and presented the obsession of female bodies as body property in which it has to display certain form of femininity. This study aims to analyze and discuss female objectification that is presented by female characters in webtoon series entitled Lookism published on Line Webtoon website in 2017. The findings revealed that Lookism contains representation of sexism in schoolgirls using feminism framework. The schoolgirls are highly sexualized by the male counterparts that takes various forms: exposing body parts those are breast, hips and legs, being the victim of verbal and physical sexual harassments, and being the object of rape. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis dan mendiskusikan tentang objektifikasi perempuan yang diperlihatkan oleh karakter perempuan di seri webtoon berjudul Lookism yang dimuat di situs web Line Webtoon pada tahun 2017. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa Lookism bermuatan gambaran seksisme gadis sekolah dengan menggunakan teori feminisme. Para gadis sekolah sangat diseksualisasi oleh karakter laki-laki dalam beberapa wujud yaitu: penampakan bagian tubuh yaitu payudara, pantat dan kaki, menjadikan karakter perempuan sebagai korban pelecehan seksual baik secara verbal maupun fisik, dan menjadikan mereka sebagai objek perkosaan. Enhancing the Informatics Engineering Students’ Ability in Writing a Descriptive Paragraph using ProWritingAid and Teacher Feedback

This study aimed at developing an effective instructional strategy using ProWritingAid and teacher feedback to solve the classroom problems and enhance the Informatics Engineering students’ ability to write a descriptive paragraph. The design of this study was a Collaborative Classroom Action Research (CCAR). It was done in five meetings or one cycle. During the research process, the researcher took a role as a researcher who collaborated with a teacher, in this case a lecturer, teaching her own class. The participants were 33 university students majoring Informatics Engineering at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The implementation of ProWritingAid and teacher feedback in this study was developed using the Genre Based approach (GBA). It was directed in five meetings and consisted of few stages namely the BKoF (Building knowledge of the Field) and MoT (Modeling of the Text) stages in the first meeting, the JCoT (Joint Construction of the Text) stage in the second meeting, and the ICoT (Independent Construction of the Text) stage in the third and fourth meetings. Meanwhile, the fifth meeting was used as the achievement test. The main strategy covered the implementation of ProWritingAid and teacher feedback in the JCoT and ICoT stages where the ProWritingAid was used before and or after teacher feedback was given. The program was used to give feedback and correct the students’ errors in grammar, mechanics, or vocabulary. The success of the study was derived from the students’ achievement in writing a descriptive paragraph and the students’ responses towards the implementation of ProWritingAid and teacher feedback. Therefore, a writing prompt for a test and questionnaire were used to gather the data. Based on the achievement test analysis, it was found that the strategy was successful in improving the Informatics Engineering students’ ability in writing a descriptive paragraph. The improvement can be seen from the result of the students’ scores from each writing criterion (organization, content, grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics) that surpassed the expected outcomes. Also, the students’ responses to the implementation of ProWritingAid and teacher feedback were very positive. There were 32 students (98%) who gave positive responses on the Likert scale item statements and 33 students (100%) chose to have both ProWritingAid and teacher feedback to be implemented in class. The open-ended section of the questionnaire also showed some important findings of the merits and demerits of the strategy. The demerits of the strategy included the weaknesses of ProWritingAid to detect some errors and failure to help the students with poor sentence construction skill. Above all, the strategy was perceived positively as it can give the best of both worlds; to help the students detect, learn, and fix their errors through ProWritingAid and help the students revise the content and organization of their descriptive paragraphs through teacher feedback. This strategy made it possible to explain why and how improvement occurred. Finally, some suggestions for the English teachers, future researchers, and ProWritingAid developers were added. One of the suggestions for the English teachers and future researchers is to not using ProWritingAid to EFL students with low English proficiency as ProWritingAid cannot be the best choice to help students with poor sentence construction skill. Thus, the students must have a basic English grammar at the first place. For the ProWritingAid developers, it is suggested that this study is used as an important reference in developing or updating the program
Incongruence Between Captions and Photos in Instagram

This phenomenon stimulated the researcher to do research regarding implicit meaning. This study aimed to know (1) the types of the implicature of the Instagram captions, and (2) the implicit meaning of the Instagram caption.The design of this study is descriptive qualitative. The data were from the uploaded postings of Instagram users in their personal accounts regardless business acconts. The data also came from two sides of the Instagram users, which are people in general and celebrity. This study gathered 54 data from three phases in order to find all variations represented.From the data analysis, there were 28 data containing particularized implicature (PI), 8 data containing generalized implicature (GI), 5 data containing both implicature (GPI), and 13 data have no implicature available. Based on the findings, known that particularized implicature are normally found in partially and not related caption among its photo. This finding also proved that a caption possibly contains two types of implicature. Another conclusion that can be drawn from the analysis is that there are eight categories of the possible implicit meanings according to the caption’s purposes, those are: Identical branding (28), satisfying the object (7), showing an expression (9), showing an expectation (5), saving face (3), opening a secret (3), and hurting someone (3). From this finding, it can be interpreted that people can share more than one implicit meaning in a caption. While several people tend to deliver their message explicitly.This research is beneficial for the English students and future researchers because it gives an overview of the implementation of implicature in daily life. This study is also beneficial for the Instagram users to give the knowledge of possible implied meaning of the caption arrangement, so then people can pay more attention in forming a caption or postings in social media.RINGKASANKinasih, Diajeng Sastri. 2018. Fenomena tersebut menjadi hal yang melatarbelakangi penelitian ini. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk megetahui (1) jenis implikatur yang terkandung dalam caption Instagram, (2) makna implisit yang terkandung dalam caption Instagram.Desain penelitian ini ialah deskripstif kualitatif. Data dijaring dari unggahan dari akun Instagram personal yang mana caption tidak bermuatan bisnis. Data juga diambil dari dua sisi pengguna Instagram, yaitu melalui pengguna Instagram pada umumnya, dan selebritis. Pada penelitian ini, peneliti mengumpulkan 54 data yang didapatkan dari tiga fase, dengan tujuan mendapatkan semua temuan yang ada di Instagram. Dari data analisis, didapatkan dua kesimpulan terkait jenis implikatur dan makna implisit. 28 data ditemukan mengandung implikatur khusus (PI), 8 data mengandung implikatur umum (GI), 5 data mengandung implikatur khusus dan implikatur umum, dan 13 data tidak mengandung implikatur apapun. Berdasarkan hasil analisis, diketahui bahwa implikatur khusus banyak ditemui pada caption yang tidak ada atau sedikit kaitannya dengan foto yang diunggah. Hasil analisis juga membuktikan bahwa satu caption dapat mengandung dua jenis implikatur.Kesimpulan lain yang dapat digambarkan ialah terdapat delapan kategori dari makna impisit berdasarkan dari tujuan-tujuannya, yakni: pembangunan citra (28), menyenangkan orang lain (7), menunjukkan ekspresi (9), menunjukkan harapan (5), menyelamatkan muka (3), membuka rahasia (3), menyakiti seseorang (3). Berdasarkan temuan tersebut dapat diinterpretasikan bahwa seseorang dapat memaparkan lebih dari satu tujuan dalam satu capion Instagram. Namun beberapa orang memilih untuk menyampaikan pesan secara eksplisit. Penelitian ini bermanfaat bagi mahasiswa Sastra Inggris dan peneliti berikutnya karena penelitian ini memberikan sebuah gambara dari implementasi implikatur dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Penelitian inni juga bermanfaat bagi pengguna media social untuk memberikan pengetahuan mengenai makna implisit yang tersirat dari penyusunan caption Instagram, sehingga pengguna social media dapat lebih memperhatikan penyusunan caption ataupun penuturan lain di social media
Struktur Kalimat dalam Karangan Mahasiswa In Country Universitas Negeri Malang Tahun 2016
ABSTRAKPenelitian ini berfokus pada struktur kalimat sederhana dan struktur kalimat luas dalam karangan mahasiswa In Country Universitas Negeri Malang tahun 2016. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah pendekatan kualitatif. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan kehadiran struktur kalimat sederhana dan struktur kalimat luas yang beragam. Keberagaman tersebut tampak pada intensitas penggunaan beberapa fungsi sintaksis, seperti S, P dan Ket. Intensitas penggunaan fungsi sintaksis tersebut dipengaruhi oleh jenis karangan mahasiswa In Country, yakni karangan narasi Kata Kunci: struktur kalimat, kalimat sederhana, kalimat luas, mahasiswa In Country SUMMARYThis study focuses on simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences of writings authored by In Country 2016 students of State University of Malang. The study employs a qualitative approach. The result indicates that there are various types of sentences, proven by the frequent use of syntactic features such as subject, verb, and various adverbs. Indonesian-English Code-switching Used in the Online Newspaper Viva.co.id
Keywords: code, code-switching, insertion, alternation, congruent lexicalization, borrowing, context, Indonesian Language, mass media, Viva.co.idThe purpose of this research was to analyze the use of Indonesian-English code-switching (CS) in the online newspaper Viva.co.id. This research investigated the contexts where the news writers code-switched and the types of code-switching used by the news writers.The data in this research was collected from news articles in Viva.co.id. The selected news articles were collected from eight different news topics: politics, business, sports, automotive, digital technology, fashion, health, and traveling. Then, the code-switching occurrences in the news articles were analyzed qualitatively using the theory of context by Halliday (1985) and Muysken’s (2000) typology of code-switching.The analysis using Halliday’s theory revealed that the field aspect of context influenced the use of code-switching in all of the eight selected news topics, as the subject matters and the topics influenced the news writers to code-switch. It was found in the findings that the news writers code-switched in two kinds of context: when the news topic contained popular English terms that were specific to the topic itself, and when quoting an interviewee. On the other hand, the analysis using Muysken’s theory revealed that insertion was the most common type of code-switching with 165 (97.6%) out of 169 occurrences, followed by congruent lexicalization with three occurrences (1.8%), and alternation with only one occurrence (0.6%). For future researchers, it is suggested for them to study other issues regarding Indonesian-English code-switching in Viva.co.id, to study Indonesian-English code-switching in other Indonesian news portals, and to use other theories in investigating the contexts of code-switching and the reasons for code-switching in their studies
The Strategies Used in Teaching Speaking to Flight Attendant Students at LPP (Lembaga Pelatihan Profesi) Sekar Gegani

The teacher should decide some useful strategies to achieve the goals in students’ learning. At LPP Sekar Gegani, the teaching speaking strategies are allow the students to use English actively in various relevant communication context, so that the alumni of this school are ready to work as flight attendants in national and international airlines. It could be assumed that the strategies in teaching speaking in LPP Sekar Gegani are appropriate for their context and many other institutions can learn for the success of the teacher and students. The aim of this research is to analyze the kinds of teaching speaking strategies, the problems in teaching speaking, and the teacher’s solutions in overcoming the problems in teaching speaking at LPP Sekar Gegani. This research used a case study. The researcher was the key instrument. Data were collected by doing interview and observation to find how the teacher teaches speaking to flight attendant candidates. The researcher conducted interviews to the ESP teacher and the students. The observation were used to record the teacher activities in the classroom while she was teaching. The findings of the study showed that the ESP teacher used five kinds of teaching speaking strategies while teaching speaking: having student presentation, video viewing, video retelling, interview, and reading aloud. The most frequent strategies used by the teacher were student presentation and video viewing. There were six problems in teaching speaking were identified in the study i.e. grammatical inaccuracy, limited vocabulary, improper pronunciation, students’ anxiousness, and students’ inability to the teacher’s intruction. The teacher solve these problems using several ways. To cope with the grammatical innacuracy she used video and correct the error immediately. Dealing with limited vocabulary, she used YouTube video, searching on Google, and helping the students to translate the words. To overcome the improper pronunciation, she used video and corrected immediately. She solved the students’ anxiousness by asking the students to work in group, used various activity, and probed the students. Dealing with students’ unwillingness, she allowed them to use L1 and make mistakes in written or oral work. She solved the students’ inability to the teacher instruction by translating English instruction to Bahasa. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that in teaching speaking, the ESP teacher at LPP Sekar Gegani used various and effective strategies. To cope with the problems she also used appropriate solutions. The findings of this research can be useful for the other ESP teachers as a consideration to decide how teaches speaking should be conducted. Further researchers can investigate the teaching speaking strategies from various points of view and use different research design
A Study of Relationship between Out-of-class Language Learning Activities and English Language Achievement among Senior High School Students

Students are expected to have various activities which support them to use the target language beyond the classroom. The willingness that the students have to deliberately practice good language learning activities will make them to be good language learners. Good language learners can be considered as autonomous learners in which they engage themselves to any kinds of out-of-class language learning activities. As a result, their English skills and achievement in the school increase. However, many students do not realize that doing out-of-class language learning will lead them to success in mastering English and get a good English test score. Hence, this study aims at investigating the relationship between students' out-of-class language learning activities and Senior High School Students’ English language achievement.This study is a correlational study. There are two kinds of instruments used in this study, which are questionnaire and English test. The study was conducted to 71 tenth and eleventh graders students of SMA Negeri 1 Tempeh. Before conducting the study, the try out phase was done to know the validity and reliability of the instruments. The data were then analysed by using Spearman rank correlation coefficient formula to know the correlation between two variables.The result of the analysis showed that the correlation coefficient (xy) was .757. It then interpreted by table .234 using 5% of significant. The result showed that the xy was greater than the table .234. As a result, the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. It meant that there was a positive significant correlation between the students’ Out-of-class Language Learning Activities (OCLLA) and their English language achievement. To sum up, this study reveals that the higher the score of the student’s Out-of-class Language Learning Activities (OCLLA), the higher scores of the English language achievement they get. From this result, further researchers who are interested in conducting the similar study are suggested to conduct a study using ex post facto to reveal cause and effect relationship.ABSTRAKWulansari, Retno. 2019. Pembelajar bahasa yang baik dapat dianggap sebagai pembelajar mandiri di mana mereka melibatkan diri mereka dengan segala jenis kegiatan pembelajaran bahasa di luar kelas. Alhasil, keterampilan dan prestasi bahasa Inggris mereka di sekolah meningkat. Namun, banyak siswa tidak menyadari bahwa dengan melaksanakan pembelajaran bahasa di luar kelas akan menguntungkan mereka untuk berhasil dalam menguasai bahasa Inggris dan mendapatkan nilai tes bahasa Inggris yang baik. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi hubungan antara kegiatan belajar bahasa di luar kelas siswa dan prestasi bahasa Inggris Siswa SMA. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian korelasional. Ada dua jenis instrumen yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini, yaitu angket dan tes bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini dilakukan pada 71 siswa kelas XI dan XI SMA Negeri 1 Tempeh. Sebelum melakukan penelitian, fase percobaan dilakukan untuk mengetahui validitas dan reliabilitas instrumen sehingga dapat digunakan sebagai data. Data kemudian dianalisis dengan menggunakan rumus Spearman Rank Correlation Coefficient untuk mengetahui korelasi antara dua variabel.Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa koefisien korelasi (xy) adalah 0,757. Kemudian dinterpretasikan dengan table .234 menggunakan signifikansi 5%. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa xy lebih besar dari table .234. Alhasil, hipotesis nol ditolak dan hipotesis alternatif diterima. Ini berarti bahwa ada korelasi positif yang signifikan antara kegiatan belajar bahasa di luar kelas siswa (OCLLA) dan prestasi bahasa Inggris mereka. Kesimpulannya, penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa semakin tinggi skor kegiatan belajar bahasa di luar kelas (OCLLA) yang didapatkan siswa, semakin tinggi pula skor prestasi bahasa Inggris yang mereka dapatkan. Dari hasil ini, terdapat saran untuk para peneliti selanjutnya yang ingin meneliti topik yang sama, mereka disarankan untuk melakukan penelitian mengunakan ex post facto design untuk menujjukkan adanya hubungan sebab akibat
Using Information Gap Technique to Increase the English Speaking Paprticipation of the Seventh Graders of SMPN 12 Malang
English as an international language is used as a tool of communication all over the world. It has four important language skills and one of them is speaking. Speaking is considered as the most essential means of effective communication. However, teaching speaking is not an easy job. Speaking is considered as the most difficult skill to teach because it happens in real time. There are many issues regarding teaching speaking. One of the problems is the lack of students participation in speaking class.This condition was found in VII F class of SMPN 12 Malang. The class was so passive when it came to speaking. There were only some of the students who were brave enough to speak in class. The condition happened because of several reasons. The first reason was that the students were scared of making mistakes in front of their friends. They did not want to be embarrassed because of making mistakes. The second reason was lack of chance of speak. The teacher rarely gave them chance to speak. The teacher still used traditional method in class where the teacher is the center of the class.Having this in mind, teachers should create activities that would engage the students in the teaching and learning process. One of the speaking technique that can make students more actively engaged to the teaching and learning process is Information Gap. In this technique the students should use the target language to share information. The technique requires active participation on the part of the students. This research aimed the increase of students’ speaking participation after using Information Gap activities in the teaching and learning process.This research used Classroom Action Research (CAR) as the research design. This research also used various Information Gap activities in two cycles and recorded two aspects which were students’ individual participation and class participation. The data were collected from observation checklist for class active participation, students’ individual participation table, field notes and questionnaire. The research could be call successful if when the student individual participation reaches 60%. The second criterion of success is when 80% of the students’ showed positive responses toward information gapThe result showed that the speaking participation of the students gradually increased. The individual participation increased as well as the class participation. In the first cycle, students’ individual participation was 62.5%. In the end of the second cycle, the individual participation increased to 75%. The students also showed positive responses toward Information Gap. The questionnaire result showed 80.66% of the students gave positive response toward Information Gap. In the end of the research the students felt a lot less anxious to speak, they felt motivated and more confident to speak, and they were enthusiastic in doing the activities.In conclusion, information gap technique can increase students’ active speaking participation. Not only individually but also the whole class participation. According to the students the learning and teaching process also felt more enjoyable and fun because they did different information gap activities in each meeting and it felt like playing games rather than doing school task. With its use of persuasive techniques, advertising can be operated much better in reaching goals. This research was conducted to examine the persuasive techniques used by singers in advertising their new songs in radio interviews. This research focused on the persuasive techniques and the way the techniques were applied. Persuasion itself is an attempt of one particular party to affect another’s behavior, feelings or intentions. This research used descriptive qualitative method since the study is intended to investigate the speech of the singers. Data were collected from the official YouTube channels of the radio program. Collected data were transcribed and analyzed with the use of the theories that are proposed by Keraf (2004) and Aristotle (1954). Keraf (2004) claimed that there are seven techniques of persuasion which are rationalization, identification, hypnotic, conformity, projection, compensation and displacement, meanwhile for the ways of persuasion, Aristotle proposed three ways namely Logos, Ethos and Pathos. The results show that out of seven techniques, only three techniques were employed which are rationalization, hypnotic, and conformity. The most frequentlyused is the hypnotic. Furthermore, ways Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift persuade the listeners are by using Logos, Ethos and Pathos that were proposed by Aristotle. It is suggested for the language users to broaden their knowledge regarding the characteristics and the application of persuasive. It is also advisable for the future researchers to conduct a paper in another field of persuasion that has yet to be touched such as Vlog advertising. RINGKASAN Hazisyah, Alifia Nur. 2019. Penggunaan teknik persuasif pun sangat penting guna mencapai tujuan sebuah iklan di media. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membahas teknik persuasif yang digunakan oleh penyanyi dalam memperkenalkan lagu-lagu terbaru mereka dalam sebuah wawancara radio. Penelitian ini berfokus pada karakteristik dari kalimat persuasif dan cara penerapan oleh sang penyanyi. Persuasi itu sendiri merupakan sebuah upaya salah satu pihak untuk mempengaruhi perilaku, perasaan, ataupun niat pihak lain. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Data diperoleh dari akun YouTube resmi program radio Ryan Reacrest. Data yang terkumpul kemudian ditranskripsi dan dianalisis dengan menggunakan metode milik Keraf (2004) dan Aristoteles (1954). Keraf (2004) mengungkapkan bahwa ada tujuh teknik persuasif yaitu rasionalisasi, identifikasi, sugesti, konformitas, kompensasi, substitusi, dan proyeksi, sedangkan untuk cara persuasi, Aristoteles (1954) mengusulkan tiga cara persuasi yaitu Logos, Ethos dan Pathos. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dari tujuh teknik persuasif, hanya tiga teknik yang digunakan oleh sang penyanyi yaitu rasionalisasi, hipnotis, dan konformitas. Teknik persuasif yang paling sering digunakan adalah teknik hipnotis. Selain itu, dapat juga ditemukan tiga cara persuasi yang diusulkan oleh Aristoteles (1954) pada ungkapan penyanyi yang merupakan Logos, Ethos dan Pathos. Penulis menyarankan pengguna bahasa untuk menjadikan penelitian ini sebagai acuan dalam memperluas wawasan tentang karakteristik dalam kalimat persuasi dan penerapannya. Begitu pula kepada para peneliti selanjutnya diharapkan untuk melakukan penelitian lebih lanjut di bidang persuasi lain seperti pengiklanan pada Vlog di YouTube
