    Suicide Notes: Spectacles of Exaggeration Expressions Used by Males and Females

    Keywords: gender and language, language stereotypes, suicide notes.Studies focusing on the topic of gender and language which have been conducted, in general, are mostly highlighting the language differences of males and females in some research settings, for example, work places, advertisements, novels, and songs.Reflecting to that, this study is aimed to analyze differences of language use, especially in the use of exaggeration expressions – the use of negative emotions, empty adjectives, italic expressions, and hyperboles, by males and females in suicide notes. One of the reasons following it is that researching language stereotypes in suicide notes convey facts which could not be found in other previous research settings since suicidal attempts lead people to a condition called ‘tunnel vision’ – a condition which shuts people from outside themselves.Using 14 suicide notes from male and female actors and writers who came from English-speaking countries which were gathered using the Internet-based data collection, this study employed the qualitative and quantitative research design. Using LIWC tool and HIP method as the research instruments; meanwhile, presenting the analysis of the findings by deriving it from some gender and language theories, such as Jespersen (1922), Lakoff (1975), and Tannen (1990), the results of this study could be drawn.Upon completing the data analysis, the findings showed that the exaggeration expressions which have dominant occurrence in the suicide notes is hyperboles. Moreover, it is also shown that in writing the suicide notes, both of the male and female subjects were using all of the four aspects of exaggeration expressions–negative emotions, empty adjectives, italic expressions, and hyperboles. Although the females participated more in using empty adjectives, italic expressions, and hyperboles, the production of negative emotions and italic expressions is dominated by the male subjects. The conditions during the suicidal attempts, the subjects’ positions, and also the stereotypes are the causes behind the results of the findings.In conclusion, the use of language by the male and female subjects in the suicide notes is following the language stereotypes, yet at the same time breaking them. In another way, it can be inferred that the male and female subjects of this study use language differently, yet similarly in writing the suicide notes. Nevertheless, this study is far from perfect, and it still needs improvements to show more of the gender representations and also to fill the lack of this study in order to contribute comprehensive knowledge of the still vibrant issue to be discussed–gender and language stereotypes

Some studies found that parents treat their children differently based on their gender (Haalbom, 2014).  Fathers are more likely to treat daughters and sons differently than mothers because most fathers still believe that a daughter needs to be loving and a son needs to be strong. This study applied a descriptive qualitative design. This research identified the differences in the way father talks to son and daughter in the Movie Bridge to Terabithia (2007). This study focuses on the differences in the way father talks to his son and daughter in several situations namely giving order, scolding, consoling and giving affection. I used the Sexism theory proposed by Glick and Fiske (1996) to analyze benevolent sexism in the way the father talks to son and daughter. The findings show that the way father talks to son and daughter in the Movie Bridge to Terabithia (2007) is often different. Father in the movie Bridge to Terabithia is softer towards his daughter and stricter towards his son.  He uses more supportive language toward his daughter and tended to use directive speech to his son. The father was also more likely to scold his son and give more affection to his daughter. Even though several scenes show that the father talks to his son and daughter differently, the way the father consoles his son and daughter is similar since in the end, the father realizes that he was too strict toward his son. Children’s gender influence the way father talks to son and daughter in the Movie Bridge to Terabithia. Father communicates and talks about feeling more towards his daughter than his son. It’s influence the relationship between father, daughter and son. In the end, father and daughter have a warm and close relationship while father and son have a cold and distance relationship. Ayah lebih cenderung memperlakukan anak perempuan dan anak laki-laki secara berbeda daripada ibu karena kebanyakan ayah masih percaya bahwa anak perempuan perlu tumbuh menjadi orang yang penuh kasih sayang sednagkan anak laki-laki harus menjadi orang yang kuat.Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dimana penelitian ini mengidentifikasi perbedaan dalam cara ayah berbicara kepada putra dan putrinya di  Film Bridge to Terabithia (2007). Peneliti fokus pada perbedaan dalam cara ayah berbicara dengan putra dan putrinya dalam beberapa situasi diantaranya saat memberi perintah, memarahi, menghibur dan menunjukkam kasih sayang. Teori yang digunakan untuk menganalisis data dalam penelitian ini adalah adalah teori Seksisme oleh Glick dan Fiske (1996).Data yang diperoleh menunjukkan bahwa cara ayah berbicara kepada putra dan putrinya di Film Bridge to Terabithia (2007) sering kali berbeda. Sang ayah lebih lembut terhadap putrinya dan lebih keras terhadap putranya. Ayah menggunakan bahasa yang bersifat mendukung untuk putrinya dan cenderung menggunakan kata perintah kepada putranya. Sang ayah juga lebih cenderung memarahi putranya dan lebih banyak menunjukkan kasih sayang kepada putrinya. Meskipun beberapa adegan memperlihatkan bahwa sang ayah berbicara dengan putra dan putrinya secara berbeda, cara sang ayah menghibur putra ketika menangis hampir sama dengan putrinya karena pada akhirnya sang ayah menyadari bahwa ia terlalu keras terhadap putranya.Pada film Bridge to Terabithia, jenis kelamin anak memengaruhi cara ayah berkomnikasi kepada putra dan putrinya. Ayah lebih sering berkomunikasi dan berbicara tentang perasaan kepada putrinya daripada putranya. Hal tersebut mempengaruhi hubungan antara ayah, putra dan putrinya. Pada akhirnya, ayah dan anak putrinya memiliki hubungan yang hangat sementara hubungan ayah dan putranya tidak begitu dekat dan cenderung dingin

Their understanding does not come just from the explanation, but also from what they see and hear and, crucially, have a chance to touch and interact with. Teaching vocabulary to young learners using media, especially visual media will be effective for teaching vocabulary mastery.This study was conducted to find the appropriate specifications for picture-to-word game for second graders.This study will also implement the visual in the picture-to-word media called Picture Matching Gamefor the second graders. This study used Research and Development design adopted from Borg, Borg, and Gall (2003) with an attempt to find appropriate specifications for the Picture Matching Game. The steps of developing,the media followthe ASSURE model from Heinich, Molenda, and Russel (2002). Comprising the six steps, i.e.,analyzing learner characteristics; stating objectives; select, modify, and design materials; utilize materials; require learner participation, and evaluate and revise.            The discussion show that the Picture Matching Game was appropriate for second graders’ and can be used in the second grader's vocabulary mastery. The result of the try-out process was the children seemed enthusiastic about joining the game, and the use of the game also simple and easy. The revision of the media was the content in the manual, laminating the cards, and the picture of some vocabularies.In conclusion, the appropriate specification for second graders was the picture must be colorful and clear, the size and the thickness of the media should be thick and strong, the object is chosen also should be found in students’ environment and surroundings

    Developing Monopoly Game for Teaching Tenses through Speaking Activity to the Eighth Graders

    AbstractThe purpose of this study is to develop a modified monopoly game as a supplementary medium in learning grammar through a speaking activity for the eighth graders. The stages of the Research and Development (R&D) was adapted from Borg and Gall (1983), which include: (1) needs analysis, (2) product development, (3) expert validation, (4) first revision, (5) product try-out, (6) second revision, and (7) final product. The product has some tools. They are (1) main board, (2) chance cards, (3) dice, (4) tokens, (5) artificial money, (6) teacher guideline, (7) students guideline, (8) answer key, and (9) package. The product was developed based on the needs analysis results. The materials which are used are asking for and giving information using Simple Present Tense and Present Continuous Tense. The prototype was validated by experts and tried-out to the eighth graders of SMP Negeri 9 Malang. Despite the importance, most of the students in year 8 (class 8.2) SMP Negeri 14 Malang had difficulties in comprehending reading text and that they were lack of motivation to participate in the learning activity. Those problems were contradictory to the 2013 Curriculum, in which students were expected to be able to read well and active during the learning activities. To solve those problems, the cooperative learning was chosen to be the ideal problem solving for it allowed students to get higher opportunity to work within group. In cooperative learning itself, some techniques were commonly used to deal with the classroom problem. One of teaching techniques from cooperative learning is Snowball Throwing Technique (henceforth STT). In order to improve the students’ reading comprehension skill and their participation in the learning activities, I applied the STT which allowed students to work in group by discussing, making questions, answering questions, and having an interesting way of learning in comprehending reading text.This study took all of the 8.2 class students (32 students) as the subjects of the study. The research design used in this study was Classroom Action Research (CAR). CAR was chosen since it helped the teacher find solution to the students’ problems by improving their reading comprehension and increasing students’ participation in the learning process through the implementation of STT. The data were collected from two aspects. They were students’ reading comprehension score taken from reading comprehension test and the level of students’ participation as an indicator of their learning motivation taken from observation done during the teaching learning process. The criteria of success in this study were: (1) 75% of the students showed a gain of 10 points in their reading comprehension test scores compared to their scores in the preliminary study, and (2) 75% of the students participated in the classroom activities implementing STT. The result of this study shows that 25 out of 32 students or 78.13% of students have increased their reading skill as indicated by their score. It can be seen from the increase of students’ average score which is from 73.23 to 88.12. Moreover, the final result of students’ response to the implementation of STT showed a positive response. All in all, the implementation of STT could improve students’ reading comprehension because their learning participation increased.RINGKASANOktavianti, Yasinta Sri. 2019. Masalah-masalah itu bertentangan dengan Kurikulum 2013, di mana siswa diharapkan dapat memahami bacaan dengan baik dan aktif selama kegiatan pembelajaran. Oleh karena itu, pembelajaran kooperatif dipilih menjadi strategi yang tepat dalam menyelesaikan masalah tersebut karena dapat memberikan kesempatan kepada siswa untuk lebih banyak bekerja dalam kelompok. Dalam menyelesaikan masalah di kelas, pembelajaran kooperatif memiliki beberapa teknik untuk diterapkan. Salah satu teknik mengajar dari pembelajaran kooperatif adalah Snowball Throwing Technique (selanjutnya STT). Untuk meningkatkan keterampilan pemahaman membaca siswa dan partisipasi mereka dalam kegiatan pembelajaran, saya menerapkan STT yang memungkinkan siswa untuk bekerja dalam kelompok dengan berdiskusi, membuat pertanyaan, menjawab pertanyaan, serta memiliki cara belajar yang menarik dalam memahami teks bacaan.Penelitian ini mengambil 32 siswa dari kelas 8.2 sebagai subjek penelitian. Desain penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK). PTK dipilih karena membantu guru untuk menemukan solusi dari masalah peningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa dan partisipasinya dalam proses pembelajaran melalui penerapan STT. Data dikumpulkan dari dua aspek, yaitu skor siswa yang diambil dari tes membaca pemahaman dan level partisipasi siswa sebagai indikator motivasi belajar mereka diperoleh dari pengamatan selama proses belajar mengajar. Kriteria keberhasilan dalam penelitian ini adalah: (1) 75% siswa menunjukkan kenaikan 10 poin dalam skor tes pemahaman membaca mereka dibandingkan dengan skor mereka dalam studi pendahuluan, dan (2) 75% siswa berpartisipasi dalam kegiatan STT. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa 25 dari 32 siswa atau 78,13% siswa telah meningkatkan nilai mereka pada tes pemahaman membaca. Hal ini dapat dilihat dengan peningkatan skor rata-rata siswa yaitu dari 73,23 menjadi 88,12. Selain itu, hasil akhir dari respon siswa pada implementasi STT menunjukkan respon positif. Secara keseluruhan, penerapan STT dapat meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa karena partisipasi belajar mereka meningkat

    Out-of-class language learning activities is an important element for Senior High School Students because it can support English learning in the classroom. Students are expected to have various activities which support them to use the target language beyond the classroom. The willingness that the students have to practice good language learning activities will make them to be good language learners. Good language learners can be considered as autonomous learners in which they are able to engage themselves to any kinds of out-of-class language learning activities. As a result, their English skills and achievement in the school increase. However, many students do not realize that doing out-of-class language learning will lead them to success in mastering English and get a good English test score. Hence, this study aims at investigating the relationship between students' out-of-class language learning activities and Senior High School Students’ English language achievement. This study is a correlational study. There are two kinds of instruments used in this study, which are questionnaire and English test. The study was conducted to 71 tenth and eleventh graders students of SMA Negeri 1 Tempeh. Before conducting the study, the try out phase was done to know the validity and reliability of the instruments. The data were then analysed by using Spearman rank correlation coefficient formula to know the correlation between two variables. The result of the analysis showed that the correlation coefficient (rxy) was .757. It then interpreted by rtable .234 using 5% of significant. The result showed that the rxy was greater than the rtable .234. As a result, the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. It meant that there was a positive significant correlation between the students’ Out-of-class Language Learning Activities (OCLLA) and their English language achievement. To sum up, this study reveals that the higher the score of the student’s Out-of-class Language Learning Activities (OCLLA), the higher scores of the English language achievement they get.     Konjungsi Subordinatif dalam Teks Berita pada Koran Jawa Pos

    Konjungsi merupakan kata yang berfungsi menghubungkan kata dengan kata, frasa dengan frasa, klausa dengan klausa, kalimat dengan kalimat, atau bisa juga paragraf dengan paragraf. Berdasarkan study awal yang dilakukan pada teks berita koran Jawa Pos penggunaan konjungsi subordinatif lebih banyak dibandingkan dengan konjungsi koordiantif. Dengan demikian, konjungsi subordinatif dapat dinyatakan sebagai jenis konjungsi yang dominan digunakan dalam teks berita. Konjungsi subordinatif dalam teks berita penting untuk diteliti. Hal tersebut dikarenakan penggunaan konjungsi subordinatif yang tepat dalam teks berita dapat menciptakan hubungan antarklausa atau kalimat menjadi lebih padu sehingga proposisi atau ide yang disampaikan penulis dapat tersampaikan dengan baik kepada pembaca. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan konjungsi subordinatif dalam teks berita pada koran Jawa Pos yang memfokuskan pada fungsi konjungsi subordinatif dalam teks berita dan keluasan jangkauan konjungsi subordinatif dalam teks berita secara mendalam. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode deskriptif. Data penelitian ini berupa konjungsi subordinatif. Sumber data dalam penelitian ini berupa teks berita pada koran Jawa Pos edisi penerbitan 21-23 Januari 2019. Dalam penelitian ini peneliti bertindak sebagai instrumen kunci. Teknik pengumpulan data dalam penelitian ini adalah teknik dokumentasi. Data yang terkumpul dianalisis melalui tiga tahap, yaitu reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Reduksi data dilakukan dengan tiga kegiatan yaitu identifikasi, kodifikasi, dan klasifikasi data sesuai dengan fungsi dan keluasan jangkauannya. Kemudian, data yang sudah di reduksi disajikan dalam bentuk kutipan klausa atau kalimat. Data tersebut kemudian dianalisis sehingga diperoleh deskripsi tentang fungsi dan keluasan jangkauan konjungsi subordinatif dalam teks berita pada koran Jawa Pos. Tahap selanjutnya yaitu penarikan kesimpulan. Penarikan kesimpulan didasarkan pada fokus penelitian. Penarikan kesimpulan dilakukan sesuai dengan temuan penelitian tentang fungsi konjungsi subordinatif dan keluasan jangkauan konjungsi subordinatif dalam teks berita pada koran Jawa Pos edisi penerbitan 21-23 Januari 2019. Berdasarkan analisis data, diperoleh hasil penelitian sebagai berikut. Pertama, fungsi konjungsi subordinatif dalam teks berita pada koran Jawa Pos dikelompokkan menjadi tujuh, yaitu konjungsi yang berfungsi menyatakan (1) penyebaban, (2) persyaratan, (3) tujuan, (4) penyungguhan, (5) kesewaktuan, (6) pengakibatan, dan (7) perbandingan. Kedua, keluasan jangkauan konjungsi subordinatif dalam teks berita pada koran Jawa Pos dibedakan menjadi dua, yaitu konjungsi subordinatif intrakalimat dan konjungsi subordinatif antarkalimat. Konjungsi subordinatif intrakalimat terdiri atas tujuh kategori, yaitu (1) penyebaban, (2) persyaratan, (3) tujuan, (4) penyungguhan, (5) kesewaktuan, (6) pengakibatan, dan (7) perbandingan, sedangkan konjungsi subordinatif antarkalimat terdiri atas empat kategori, yaitu (1) penyebaban, (2) penyungguhan, (3) kesewaktuan, dan (4) pengakibatan. Berdasarkan data yang telah disajikan, diperoleh simpulan sebagai berikut. Pertama, fungsi konjungsi subordinatif dalam teks berita koran Jawa Pos dikelompokkan menjadi tujuh, yaitu konjungsi yang berfungsi menyatakan penyebaban, persyaratan, tujuan, penyungguhan, kesewaktuan, pengakibatan, dan perbandigan. Penggunaan konjungsi subordinatif semua sudah tepat sesuai dengan fungsinya. Terdapat beberapa konjungsi yang penempatannya dapat dipidah di awal atau ditengah klausa. Konjungsi tersebut adalah konjungsi karena, gara-gara, kalau, jika, bila, apabila, guna, meski, walaupun, kendati, kalaupun, ketika, saat, sebelum, dan sejak. Konjungsi tersebut dapat dipindahkan ketika konstituen yang mengikutinya juga berpindah. Berpindahnya konstituen disebabkan oleh transformasi fokus. Kedua, keluasan jangkauan konjungsi subordinatif dalam koran Jawa Pos dikelompokkan menjadi dua, yaitu konjungsi subordinatif intrakalimat dan konjungsi subordinatif antarkalimat. Konjungsi subordinatif dalam teks berita pada koran Jawa Pos lebih banyak digunakan sebagai penghubung intrakalimat daripada antarkalimat. Semua penggunaan konjungsi subordinatif intrakalimat dalam teks berita pada koran Jawa Pos sudah tepat dilihat dari konteks klausa yang dihubungkan dan penempatan konjungsinya, sedangkan penggunaan konjungsi subordinatif antarkalimat dalam teks berita pada koran Jawa Pos sebagian dinyatakan tepat dan sebagian dinyatakan tidak tepat. Ketidaktepatan penggunaan konjungsi subordinatif antarkalimat disebabkan oleh penempatan konjungsi yang tidak sesuai. Terdapat beberapa konjungsi yang seharusnya digunakan sebagai penghubung antarklausa, tetapi dalam teks berita pada koran Jawa Pos, konjungsi tersebut digunakan sebagai penghubung antarkalimat. Konjungsi tersebut adalah (1) konjungsi penyebaban yang meliputi sebab, dan karena, (2) konjungsi penyungguhan yang meliputi meskipun, meski, dan walaupun, dan (3) konjungsi pengakibatan yang meliputi sampai-sampai, hingga, dan sehingga. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, dikemukakan tiga saran. Pertama, saran ditujukan kepada guru Bahasa Indonesia. Guru Bahasa Indonesia diharapkan mengerti dan memahami penggunaan konjungsi yang tepat dalam teks berita sebelum mengajarkan materi menulis teks berita kepada peserta didik. Hal tersebut bertujuan untuk meminimalisir kesalahan penggunaan konjungsi khususnya konjungsi subordinatif dalam teks berita. Kedua, saran ditujukan kepada pegiat berita. Pegiat berita diharapkan memahami bagaimana penggunaan konjungsi subordinatif yang tepat dan dapat mengaplikasikannya pada saat menulis teks berita agar hubungan antarklausa atau kalimat dalam teks berita yang ditulis menjadi lebih padu dan logis sehingga proposisi atau ide yang disampaikan dalam teks berita mudah untuk difahami oleh pembaca.     This study was conducted for the purpose of improving Vocational High School students’ ability in reading comprehension on narrative text using story frames strategy. This study used Classroom Action Research (CAR) design. The steps of CAR were planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. It took one cycle consisted of four meetings to achieve the criterion of success.  Data collections were collected using pre-test, final-test and field notes. The subjects of this research were 35 students of X APh2 (Akomodasi Perhotelan) of SMKN 3 Malang in the second of semester of the academic year 2018/2019. The result of this study showed that the use of story frames strategy can improve the students’ reading comprehension on narrative text. It was shown that there were 30 students (86%) had been achieved the criteria of success. Based on the findings of this study, some suggestions can be directed toward the English teacher and future researcher(s). For English teacher, this strategy can be used as one of the strategies to solve reading problem in the class. For further researchers who will conduct the same strategy, they have to allocate sufficient time on doing every activity in story frames strategy

    ABSTRACTThis research was intended to improve thent grade students’ ability in writing recount text by implementing blended learning strategy using Instagram and Edmodo at SMAN 10 Malang. The result of the study indicated that the implementation of Blended Learning Strategy using Instagram and Edmodo successfully improve the students’ quality of writing. This was reflected in the achievement of the criteria of success. Twenty three out of 28 students or 85% of the students achieved the minimum mastery standard, which is 78. In terms of the students’ involvement in the teaching and learning activities, the average score for students’ involvement in four meetings was 92%. Therefore, the implementation of the method and the strategy has proven to be effective in improving students’ ability in writing recount texts.
