Gender and Language: Male Characteristics by Cosmopolitan and Female Characteristics by Da Man
Gender roles which revolve around the conception of male and female characteristics are socially and culturally constructed. A characteristic embedded to one certain sex in a society may be embedded to the other sex in different society. In this case, the conception of male and female characteristics is viewed from magazines as it is known that media are responsible in shaping the point of view of the society. In terms of media, women are traditionally portrayed as passive, nurturing, gentle, cooperative, and sensitive, while men are traditionally portrayed as logical, competitive, independent, assertive, and dominant. This study aims to find out how male characteristics are constructed by Cosmopolitan and how female characteristics are constructed by Da Man. Using the method of qualitative descriptive, this study provides explanation on how male and female characteristics are described from the opposite viewpoint. Upon collecting the data, the process was followed by content analysis. The result shows that men are capable of expressing their emotions and feelings as well as understanding other people's feelings and emotions, value emotional connection with other people, are appreciative, and are capable of performing more than one task at a time besides being strong and dominant. However, men are described as verbally inexpressive and they are not good at making small talks. On the other hand, women are described as hard working, adventurous, and empowering. The traditional characteristic of women that is caring can also be found in Da Man. ABSTRAK Iskandar, Vikri . 2017. ABSTRAK Septianingsih, Naeni. 2018. The Correlation between Students’ Mastery of Past Tense and Their Ability in Writing Recount Texts. Thesis, Departmen of English, Faculty of Letters, Universitas Negeri Malang. Advisors: (I) Prof. Bambang Yudi Cahyono, Ph.D. (II) Dr. Niamika El Khoiri, M.A. Keywords: Past Tense, Grammar, Recount Text, Language Use Writing, Correlation English plays important roles in international communication. In Indonesia, English is taught as the foreign language. There are four skills that the students have to learn, namely listening, speaking, reading, and writing. On the other hand, vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar are also taught to support the students to learn those four skills. In this study, the writer investigated the correlation between grammar and writing, specifically the students’ mastery of past tense and their ability in writing recount text. The study was conducted to 60 tenth graders students of SMA Negeri 8 Malang. The writer used two instruments which were multiple choice and completion test to measure the students’ understanding of past tense and their ability in writing recount text. After the test was conducted, the writer analyzed the validity and reliability so that the test could be used as the data. Then the data were calculated using Pearson’s formula to know the correlation between two variables. The results of analysis showed that the correlation coefficient (rxy) was 0.753. It then interpreted by rtabe using 5% of significance. The result was that the rxy 0.753 was higher than the rtable 0.2144. It meant that the null hypothesis was rejected. So, there is a significant correlation between students’ mastery of past tense and their ability in writing recount text. In addition, there was a significant correlation between students’ mastery of past tense and their scores in language use component in writing recount text. It can be concluded that the higher the students’ mastery of the past tense, the higher their ability in writing recount text and the higher the students’ mastery in past tense, the higher scores they get in language use component in writing recount text. It is then suggested that English teachers pay attention to grammar when teaching writing and hopefully they motivated to make better teaching strategy to teach grammar. And for the future researcher who wants to investigate the same topic, they are suggested combine grammar with the different aspects of writing
The Implementation of SQ3R Technique to Improve the Eighth Graders’ Reading Comprehension of Recount Texts
This study is aimed at implementing the SQ3R technique to solve the classroom problems found in the class 8I in SMPN 8 Malang. The study was conducted on the basis of the preliminary study in which the researcher identified some classroom problems, namely (1) the students had a low ability in their reading comprehension of recount texts, and (2) the students had a low level of participation in the classroom reading activities. Thus, the researcher decided to implement the SQ3R technique because this technique can improve the students’ reading comprehension and level of active participation in the classroom.SQ3R technique is a technique that focuses primarily on reading comprehension through five activities of (1) surveying, (2) questioning, (3) reading, (4) reciting, and (5) reviewing. In implementing the technique, the researcher conducted a classroom action research (CAR) that was carried out in two cycles with total six meetings. The data presented in this study are the students’ scores, which are obtained through reading comprehension tests, and the results of the observation regarding the students’ participation, which are collected from observation checklists. The study results were then analyzed and compared to the criteria of success defined in this study to see whether they were achieved or not.The findings of the study indicated that the implementation of the SQ3R technique was (1) successful in improving the students’ reading comprehension of recount texts and (2) able to increase the students’ participation in reading activities. At the end of the study, 87.5% of the students had achieved at least a 10-point improvement in their reading comprehension test scores compared to their scores in the preliminary test. Furthermore, 92.85% of the students had actively participated in all of the SQ3R activities in the classroom. ABSTRAK Ciptorini, Nanda Putri. 2018. Using Two Stay Two Stray Technique to Improve Students’ Participation in Listening Class of Senior High School. Thesis, Department of English, Faculty ofLetters, UniversitasNegeriMalang. Advisors: Nur Hayati, S.Pd., M.Ed.and Francisca Maria Ivone, M.A., Ph.D. Keywords: Two Stay Two Stray (TSTS) technique, listening class, students’ participation, hortatory texts Students’ participation is significant impact on students’ language performance including their listening ability. The students had low participation in the discussion on what they have listened to. In order to address these issues, the reseacher designed learning activities using Two Stay Two Stray (TSTS) technique to improve their participation. The students’ inability to understand listening texts was also observed in SMAN 1 Turen. The students had difficulties in understanding unfamiliar words, sentence structures, and the speaker’s accent. This study aimed to investigate how the technique can be used to improve students’ participation in listening class of senior high school. The research design of this study was classroom action research which consisted of four stages: planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The subjects of this study were twenty two students of class XI MIA 1. The instruments used to collect the required data were observation checklist, field notes, questionnaire and interview guide. The technique was found to be successful in improving students’ participation that on average, there were 78% of the students participated in the teaching and learning process in terms of asking and answering the questions, giving the opinions, responding to the teacher, and discussing the topics related with hortatory texts. The successful procedure in implementing the technique began with general explanations of hortatory texts, then students’listening on hortatory texts and doing listening exercises using the worksheets. The stages continued to a brief class discussion on hortatory texts using TSTStechnique, a presentation of the hortatory texts they listened to, and ended with an evaluation of the technique. Based on the findings, it is suggested that English teachers implement the TSTS technique as the alternative learning using thedesigned procedure and consider the choice of the listening material sinceit affects the students’ interest. It is recommended that future reseachers conduct a study on TSTS technique with students of different grades and levels of education. They can also conduct a study on TSTS technique to increase the students’ active participation and understanding in different language skills.
