ABSTRAK   Rochmadi, Pasmardedi A. 2017. V for Vendetta: An Ecranisation Study. Thesis, English Department, Faculty of Letters, State University of Malang. Thesis Advisors: (I) Drs. Kukuh Prayitno S., M.A, (II) Inayatul Fariha S.S., M.A.   Keywords: graphic novel, movie, ecranisation, adaptation, film Ecranisation is a process of literary adaptation where an adapted novel or graphic novel undergoes a development process that employs specific selection of a part or an essence of the story to appear in the cinematic version. V for Vendetta is a graphic novel that undergoes such ecranisation process which results in a movie adaptation whose storyline, context, and characters are different from those of the original version. In certain points, the original storyline which revolves around moral ambiguity changes into a story of revolutionary heroism, and several parts of the plot and character traits change to further support the idea of the heroic story.       Based on the above explanation, this research is conducted to see what reasons underlying the difference. To help the research, McFarlane's“Novel to Film: An Introduction to the Theory of Adaptation” (1996) is used as references to study some factors in adaptation. In addition, Moore’s (2003) and McCloud’s (1993) respective points of view toward graphic novel or comic is used to illustrate a point that the adaptation of the graphic media into cinematic media is quite possible without substituting or reducing the fidelity of original source, due to the characteristics of movies and graphic novels are not much apart. There are three points discussed in this study: the political setting, the four major characters, and the plot of the story. From the research finding, it can be concluded that the difference of the context and political settings that underlies the making of V for Vendetta are present. The cinematic adaptation chooses to use the political situation in the U.S. over the course of Bush’s administration that last from 2001 to 2009, which is more recent and acceptable to viewers at the time (viewers that were dominated by American audience). The theme of moral ambiguity in the original work is also altered by the film maker in order to strengthen the story of a hero who emerged amid the oppression. Therefore, the emphasized element in the adaptation is the moral value of the hero versus the villain, in which respectively made the character of V and Adam as well as other element become different in the process.

Making requests is one of the essential elements in communication, and there are many previous studies that have been conducted on this topic. However, the present study takes different aim which only focuses on analysing the strategies that the English Foreign Language (EFL) learners use towards their lecturers and fellow students in a university setting.             In this study, a descriptive qualitative method was used and the data were gathered from 30 students (15 females and 15 males) of English Language and Literature (ELL) Program 2014, Universitas Negeri Malang. Moreover, Discourse Completion Test (DCT) was used as the instrument to collect the data. The DCT was in the form of questionnaire that consisted of ten different scenarios which were adapted from some situations in the real life of a university setting. In the scenarios, EFL learners were asked to make five requests that were directed to the lecturers and the other five requests directed to the fellow students. The findings reveal that; 1). EFL learners used different types of request proposed by Blum-Kulka (1989). Conventionally Indirect strategy was the most preferred by EFL learners. Direct strategy placed the second level, while the most rarely used by EFL learners in making requests was Non-conventionally Indirect strategy. Besides, various kinds of Request modifications were also found in their requests that works to mitigate the illocutionary force of the request. 2). The most preferable strategy in making request used by EFL learners towards the lecturers and fellow students was Conventionally Indirect strategy, especially Query Preparatory strategy. 3). Several factors found that affect Conventionally Indirect strategy to be the most preferable strategy used by EFL learners. First, the use of various formulas of Query preparatory strategy to make indirect requests. Second, social variables and degrees of imposition also influence EFL learners in making requests. Third, the choice of the strategy in making a request is also affected by Indonesian culture.             It is suggested that the students of Department of English and other future researchers use this study as a valuable reference in conducting research on this topic. Accordingly, further research is needed to broaden the knowledge around this issue, especially in Indonesian context since it is an interesting topic in which language is related to politeness and culture.ABSTRAK   Making requests is one of the essential elements in communication, and there are many previous studies that have been conducted on this topic. ABSTRAK   Subtitlesin audio-visual media i.e. a movie in English is very helpful in the process of learning English for L2 students. The comparison of the scores appeared from the test conducted by many researchers shows that learners'word knowledge developed rapidly when subtitle is attached to the movie they were watching. Knowing that subtitle can assist learners to improve their word knowledge, it seems important to figure out more on what subtitle language can facilitate learners better to acquire new words, whether it is English or translated language (mother-tongue language of L2 students). This research was conducted in Pirayanawin Klonghin Wittaya Junior High School, Pattani Province, southern Thailand, with a view to know the different perception of students towards their word knowledgeas well as to figure out which subtitle is more effective between the translated subtitle and English subtitle in facilitating learners in learning word. Since this research was conducted in Thailand, this research compared a subtitle with Thai language-as the translated language or mother-tongue language of L2 students-to a subtitle with English language which is provided in the movie. This study was conducted by implementing Vocabulary Knowledge Scale (VKS) in the pretest and posttest where the researcher were applying the test to two groups which are equalas it is needed in this study. This study showed that the group which was provided with an English subtitle in the movie improved more significant in terms of their word knowledge compared with those who watched the movie with translated subtitle, Thai language. That is because they were listening-while-reading simultaneously, which means they acquired the language input efficiently. This is also interpreted by researchers as a process where learners can develop their skills not only devoted to the improvement of word knowledge, but also reading and listening comprehension skills towards an idea in such text or story

The data were taken from July 2016 up to September 2017. After getting 50 data, the researcher used 3 stages of analyzing data, namely (1) reading the memes, (2) categorizing the memes into their sub-maxim, and (3) analyzing for their violations as the last step. The finding and discussion showed that the frequency of each maxim violations were different. There were 4 types of violation of maxims (1) violation of maxim of quantity occurred because most of the speakers did not explain information clearly (3 data, 6%),  (2) violation of maxim of quality arose due to the speakers were not being truthful and provided the wrong information (21 data, 42%), (3) violation of maxim of relation happened because the participants were not being relevant while uttering information (4 data, 8%), (4) violation of maxim of manner caused by the speakers were not being brief and orderly which can cause ambiguity (22 data, 44%). In addition, the implications which appeared in the set-up can be the effect of those violations. The implications might be something humorous because in the punch-line, the speakers were taking the reader by surprise which trigger laughter. It can finally be concluded that this study could be adopted by future reserachers to investigate further on conversational implicature in other topics and media which are rarely explored in providing supplementary perspective of knowledge in the field of pragmatics, especially conversational implicature. It is also suggested for future researchers to develop more ideas in order to give better understanding about implicature
