ABSTRAK   Pradana, Aditya. 2018. Using Genre-Based Approach to Improve Students' Ability in Writing A Procedure Text. Sarjana's Thesis. Universitas Negeri Malang: Department of English. Advisors: (1) Prof. Dr. Nur Mukminatien, M.Pd., (2) Drs. Andi Muhtar, M.A.   Key words: Text genre, procedure text, approach, method, writing ability. Writing skill is one of the difficult skills in English. Many students struggle to master writing more than the other skills: listening, reading and speaking. In Vocational Schools, learning a procedure text appears to be a need for the students. The students' ability was below the standard reflected on their scores. In order to improve students' ability to produce a procedure text, the use of genre is useful. Thus, this research utilizes the use of genre to specify the learning focus in SMKN 1 Jenangan Ponorogo. The researcher used Classroom Action Research (CAR) design. The data were collected by conducting interview, observation, and analyzing students' writing. In implementing the technique, the researcher used Genre Based Approach (GBA). The instruments were observation sheets, interview guide, and writing test. The researcher found that using genre-based approach can improve the students' ability in writing a procedure text. From the research finding, it can be concluded that there are twenty-one students (65.6%) who have already passed the standard minimum score (75) in final test which surpasses the criteria of success in this study where the target is minimum 60% from the total students. In other words, genre-based approach can improve the students' writing ability in terms of students' final achievement. Some conclusions that can be drawn are the following. First, the use of genre-based approach made students understand the fundamental aspects of the text by implementing two stages which are Building Knowledge of the Field (BKoF) and Modeling of the Text (MoT). Second, the drafting stages applied during the learning process made students write without being afraid to make mistakes and be able to get feedback from others which can be implemented in Joint Construction of the Text (JCoT) and Independent Construction of the Text (ICoT). The researcher suggests for English teachers to use genre-based approach because it gives comprehensive overview and evaluation of using genre-based approach in improving senior high school students' ability in writing, especially in a procedure text

ABSTRAK   Fatiani, Tisyrinul. 2018.The Use of Discourse Marker ‘Like’ by Non-Native Speakers of English. Thesis, Department of English, Faculty of Letters, Universitas Negeri Malang. Advisors: (I)Prof. Dr. Yazid Basthomi, M.A. (II)Dr. Suharyadi, S.Pd., M.Pd.   Key words: Discourse markers, ‘like’, corpus data A number of researchers have continuously done studies on discourse markers (DMs). One of the importantissues are use of discourse marker ‘like’ among native and non-native speakers of English (NNSE). However, despite the previous studies on the use of ‘like’, we do not have enough understanding on the use of ‘like’among non-native speakers of English that is evidenced in corpus data. Therefore, this study aims to provide textual evidence on the use of ‘like’ among the non-native speakers. To do the study, corpus data on discourse marker ‘like’ by NNSE were collected from Michigan Corpus of Academic Spoken English (MICASE). It is one of the largest freely-available corpus of English storing nearly 1.8 million words of transcribed speech. To identify the use of ‘like’, a framework of functional categories of ‘like’ provided by Diskin (2017) was used in this study.  To analyze and present the data, a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches was used. The findings show that from the collected 433 entries, six primary functions of ‘like’ proposed by Diskin (2017) are evident in the data. Illustrator is the most frequent use of like with 173 entries (39.96%), followed by filler with 107 entries(24.71%), like as part of speech with referential meaning with 76 entries (17.55%), and approximative adverb with 48 entries (11.00%). This supports a study conducted by Diskin (2017) stating that these categories are considered as the most common use of ‘like’ with no major differences of use among the non-native speakers of English and the native speakers. In addition, other functional categories of ‘like’ found in the corpus data include exemplifier with 19 entries (4.38%), mitigator with 6 entries (1.38%), and self-corrector with 4 entries (0.92%). Furthermore, in line with Diskin’s (2017) findings,‘like’as mitigator is a discourse-pragmatic marker that significantly belongs to the native speakers meaning that it requires more efforts of adaptation for the non-native speakers to adopt this use of ‘like’. As such, this functional category is found to be the least frequent use of like in this study. The results of this study provide a textual evidence of previous studies on the use of discourse-pragmatic marker ‘like’among non-native speakers of English. For future research, the analysis is suggested to include data from various sources of corpus data. In addition, it is also suggested that future researchers interested in conducting a study with the similar focus can further explore internal and external factors possible to influence the use of ‘like’among NNSE

ABSTRAK   Aziz, Maulana. 2018. Tony Stark and His Directives at Iron Man, The Movie. Sarjana’s Thesis, English Department, Faculty of Letters, State University of Malang. Advisors: (1) Aulia Apriana, S.S, M.Pd, (2) Dr. Suharyadi, S.Pd, M.Pd   Keywords: directive acts, main character, Tony Stark, Iron Man movie Communication is one way to express ideas, feelings, and emotions. The speakers do not only communicate by producing the utterances containing grammatical structures and words, but also perform actions through utterances. Directive speech act is an act which is used to get someone to do something, not merely giving an order or making a request. According to meaning and context of the utterance, there are a variety of actions that can be performed through directive speech act according to Vanderveken (1990), such as requesting, asking, commanding, ordering suggesting, advising, inviting, and so on. This study aims to find out the types and frequency of directive acts employed by Tony Stark in Iron Man movie by using qualitative approach. The data are in the form of Iron Man movie script. Since the object of this study is a film, the main instrument for collecting the data is the writer himself; it means that the writer chose, collected, and analyzed the data (movie script), without using any other instrument such as scales, questionaires, surveys, formula, etc. The data reveals that directive acts performed by Tony Stark in the movie covered 150 utterances. Those are categorized as directive acts of commanding 52 utterances (34.7%), asking of 45 utterances (30%), requesting 18 utterances (12%), advising 12 utterances (8%), ordering 9 utterances (6%), suggesting 8 utterances (5.3%), and forbidding 6 utterances (4%).  Directive acts of commanding and asking are most frequently used by the Tony Stark; for he would like to maintain his status as the leader towards the other characters. On the other hand, there are five types of directive acts which rarely used by Tony Stark, namely, directive acts of requesting, advising ordering, suggesting and forbidding. It can finally be concluded that this research found all of the seven types of directive acts according to Vanderveken (1990) used by Tony Stark of Iron Man movie. Color is one of elements human perceived. In literature, color works as a language, a medium to create a vivid mood or situation as well as to signify the underlying messages. Technically, the exploration of colors in literary works creates/recreates the meaning of colors in the mind of readers. Life of Pi, a novel by Yann Martel is one of the novels which has colors as one of the significant milieus. According to the important role colors have in literature, thus, it is noteworthy to seek the significance of colors in the novel. In order to accomplish the aim of the study, theoretical frameworks are set within the discussion of sign, color imagery and color symbolism. Some previous studies regarding the novel of Life of Pi as well as previous studies on color symbolism in literary works are used as references to amplify the study. In the findings, orange appears as a representation of a mother while green appears as a hint of a duality of the story. White comes up conveying the image of life and blue portrays the nature or, in a broader view, earthling space limit. These findings geared towards the understanding of colors play a big part in reinforcing the intrinsic elements of the novel. This study does not deal with ecocriticism, post-colonialism, color of skin, and feminism issues. It merely concentrates on how colors are constructed with regard to scenery and atmosphere. Therefore, future research on aforementioned issues would be interesting to follow.RINGKASAN Color is one of elements human perceived.
