Economic freedom can be defined as freedom in which individuals can perform their economic activities freely without being exposed to the pressures and constraints. The aim of the studies on the classification of countries according to their economic freedoms is to determine the place of the countries in the world or in the continent where they are located. In this way, the status of the countries with sustainable growth and high welfare is determined. In this study, it is aimed to rank Asian countries according to economic freedom data. In contrast to many classifications and sorting studies, the present study attempts to determine the best sorting method by comparing multiple methods. As a result of the economic freedoms published by the Heritage Foundation every year, the conditions of Asian countries between 2015-2019 were determined. Fuzzy C-Means, Gath-Geva and Gustafson-Kessel methods, which are the three most commonly used methods, were used in the fuzzy clustering analysis. The results obtained from all fuzzy clustering methods were compared and interpreted with the results of the Heritage Foundation year by year. According to all analysis results, it can be said that the Fuzzy C-means method is more successful for Economic Freedom data and classification studies. According to the Fuzzy C-Means method, the three best Asian countries were Hong Kong, New Zealand and Australia respectivel

    Get PDF
The study examined the applicability of the Altman Z-score model in predicting bankrupt companies or financially distressed companies on the Ghana Stock Exchange. A sample 10 listed firms were selected and one other company to be used for validation purposes. The validation process involved data for 2016 and 2017 for Aluworks which represented a distressed company and GOIL Ghana Limited which represented non-distressed company. The final analysis was based on a random sample of 10 listed firms using their 2017 financial statement. The results of the initial prediction showed 50 percent of the companies were correctly predicted whiles the others were misclassified. Additional analyses showed that the size of the company influence the probability of bankruptcy whiles the nature of the business does not. The conclusion drawn shows that the Altman Z-score cannot accurately predict financially distressed firms in Ghana but can still be useful in giving signals

A number of studies state that e-government is a "powerful" anti-corruption tool but other researchers still have doubts about the role of e-government. In fact, other researchers claim that e-government is not only a powerful weapon against corruption but also has the potential to create corruption opportunities. Starting from this phenomenon, this study aims to synthesize research results regarding the role of e-government in reducing corruption. This research systematized the results of research over the past 19 years using a systematic review method. This method provides a comprehensive review so it is expected to reduce the bias of literature. This paper reviews 16 articles published in reputable peer-reviewed journals. Most articles use macro-comparative data in all countries, while other articles use surveys, case studies, and conceptual papers. In general, the systematic review result show that e-government can reduce corruption. However, the success of e-government is not universally applicable. There are internal and external organizational factors that influence the effectiveness of e-government functions to againts corruption

Non-linear return to human capital for workers of productive sectors in Indonesia

    Get PDF
This study is aimed to investigate a typical return to human capital for workers of productive economic sectors in Indonesia. Instead of satisfying Mincer’s linearity assumption, we use a piecewise linear spline function in order to trace marginal returns to education and job tenure and to find out how large the returns to both variables could be moderated by certain variables. The research is conducted on 2609 individuals who work for Indonesian top-five productive sectors in 2016, as recorded in National Work Force Survey (SAKERNAS). We implement quantile regression analysis to produce three levels earning model. The result shows that the return to education varies across schooling level and apparently negative for academy schooling. We also find that job training participation does not always enhance the return to education especially for higher earning workers. The return to job tenure is found to diminish during career length. However, graduating from certain college majors significantly slowdown the diminishing return to job tenure and thus promoting better career. Based on these findings, we outline several ideas concerned to developing higher education and job training provision in national scale for more efficient supply of human capital in the productive sectors
