Reflectarray Pattern Optimization for Advanced Wireless Communications

    No full text
A framework for the design and optimization of large dual-linear polarized, shaped-beam reflectarrays for advanced wireless communications is presented. The methodology is based on the generalized intersection approach (IA) algorithm for both phase-only synthesis (POS) and direct optimization of the reflectarray layout, as well as on the use of a method of moments in the spectral domain assuming local periodicity. A thorough description of the design and optimization procedures is provided. To demonstrate the capabilities of the proposed framework, two examples are considered. The first example is a shaped-beam reflectarray for future 5G base stations working in the millimeter waveband, radiating a sectored-beam pattern in azimuth and squared-cosecant pattern in elevation to provide constant power in the coverage area. The second example is a very large contoured-beam reflectarray for direct-to-home (DTH) broadcasting based on real mission requirements with Southern Asia coverage. This work was supported in part by the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades under the project TEC2017-86619-R (ARTEINE); by the Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad under the project TEC2016-75103-C2-1-R (MYRADA); by the Gobierno del Principado de Asturias/FEDER under the project GRUPIN-IDI/2018/000191; by the Gobierno del Principado de Asturias through the Programa “Clarín” de Ayudas Postdoctorales/Marie Curie COFUND under the project ACA17-09; and by Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte/Programa de Movilidad “Salvador de Madariaga” (Ref. Assessing Controls on the Displacement of Tracers in Gravel-Bed Rivers

    No full text
Particle travel length is one of the main dimensions of bedload and strongly influences river morpho-dynamics, particularly when exploring the interactions between sediment transport and channel morphology. This process has been traditionally studied by using tagged stones that allow tracking the movement experienced by individual grains during transport episodes. In this paper, we relate measured particle travel lengths to flow metrics and river channel parameters. First, we link the event-based bedload volumes to the active-layer dimensions, and the product between the average bedload rates and the duration of competent flows. We then hypothesize that travel length depends on channel width, surface grain-size, particle size, bed structure, flow strength, and duration of competent flow. The results from this approach are, subsequently, tested with a set of tracer observations from eight rivers that were available in the literature. The relationship between travel length and flow metrics was found to be statistically strong and has the potential to allow us to quantitatively assess the one-day dynamics of particles moving along streambeds. We also analyzed the influence of channel morphology and bed structure and identified morphological signatures for particle transport in gravel-bed riversAyuda post-doctoral ACB17-44, ‘Clarín’ -FICYT (Principado de Asturias) / Marie Curie Co-Fund. No genome-wide DNA methylation changes found associated with medium-term reduced graphene oxide exposure in human lung epithelial cells

The presence of nanomaterials in our everyday life is ever increasing, and so too are concerns about the possible health consequences of exposure to them. While evidence of their biological activity is growing, there is still scant knowledge of the epigenetic mechanisms that could be at play in these processes. Moreover, the great variability in the chemical and physical structures of these compounds handicaps the study of their possible health risks. Here we have synthesized reduced graphene oxide (rGO) through the thermal exfoliation/reduction of graphite oxide, and characterized the resulting material. We have then made use of Illumina's MethylationEPIC arrays and bisulphite pyrosequencing to analyse the genome-wide and global DNA methylation dynamics associated with the medium-term exposure of human lung epithelial cells to rGO at concentrations of 1 and 10 µg/mL. The results show no genome-wide or global DNA methylation changes associated with either condition. Our observations thus suggest that medium-term rGO exposure does not have significant effects on the DNA methylation patterns of human lung epithelial cells

ENGLISH: Aided by the Klosterbuch of Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg, expected to appear in 2019, this contribution will present the potential as well as the problems of using the Repertorium Germanicum and the Repertorium Poenitentiariae Germanicum as resource tools. The specific character of the material presented in the Repertorium Germanicum in addition to Repertorium Germanicum-online operating difficulties – which are being solved –, as well as the current state of research concerning the relationship between the northern regions of Germany and the Roman Curia, which requires improvement, all explain why the Repertorium Germanicum is scarcely used for regional studies. Samples show, however, that the Repertorium Germanicum offers as yet hidden potential for research in the area of Schleswig-Holstein

ENGLISH: This paper aims to investigate the presence of female monasteries, and to study religious experiences in the Veronese hinterland from the late Antiquity to the first half of the twelfth century, with a special focus on early medieval foundations. The scarcity of documents, especially for the Lombard period, makes it particularly challenging to study the origins of these monasteries, women’s religious experiences, their social recruitment and their ties with the urban aristocracies. In general, the picture we get of female monasticism is one of a very small group of foundations which gradually disappear by the end of the first millennium. Of special note is the monastery of San Michele in Campagna, which according to local historiographical tradition, was founded in the early Middle Ages, even though the earliest documents mentioning the presence of nuns date to the mid-eleventh century. The favourable position of the monastery in the Campanea not far from the city, near the Adige river and along the via Postumia, led to the development of both a thriving village that included the monastic community in the surrounding rural society, and a network of relationships with urban families who were experiencing rapid upward mobility

Pro honore, utilitate et commodo: The Margraviate of Istria and the Market Privileges of the Aquileian Patriarch Bertrand de Saint-Geniès (1334-1350)

    Get PDF
The paper analyzes the fair privilege issued by the Aquileian patriarch Bertrand de Saint-Geniès to the commune of Buzet. It is argued that the charter had several mutually complimentary purposes that come to light only when contextualized within Bertrand’s overall political program. By comparing the document with similar market privileges issued by the patriarch throughout his turbulent reign, the author argues that the charter to Buzet had both economic and political implications. On the one hand, the privilege forms a part of the series of charters designed to bolster the volume of trade and the income from highway tolls throughout the Patriarchate, while at the same time fostering symbiotic ties between the central government and the subject community receiving the grant. Finally, the paper discusses the administrative structure of the Margraviate of Istria as revealed in the privilege and argues that Istrian possessions were not on the same constitutional level as Friulian ones within the jurisdictional framework of this ecclesiastical principality. The article concludes with a critical edition of the charter and its translation into modern English

ENGLISH: The article examines some compact groups of documents, consisting in a large number of papers, acquired by the hospital of Sant’Andrea di Vercelli in the course of its activities in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The connection of these documentary groups with the credit activities carried out by subjects at different levels of the social scale and the role of the hospital as a collector of credit assets is highlighted. This in a period (about 1280-1330) characterized by bitter political clashes and by the need of the parties in competition to drain resources to finance the struggles, with the consequent accumulation of outstanding credits and the transfer, at the end of the process, of land assets in the hands of creditors or those (religious and charitable institutions) who had inherited the wealth of them
