Alfonso of Aragon, the Magnanimous (1394-1458), when became king of the southern part of Italy in 1443, celebrated a spectacular Triumph. At his court, he gathered around himself the most learned intellectuals of the time, from any place: they completely renewed the political consensus building, adapted to the imperial aspirations of the new ruler. The legitimacy of the new kingdom followed different roads, on all the different power levels investigated by Max Weber: rational, traditional and charismatic. The result was the invention of “Monarchical Humanism”: a Humanism which has identifying characters, innovative, alternative or totally opposed to, but certainly no less important than those of the “Civil Humanism” developed in other places
L’incoronazione nella rappresentazione letteraria di Pietro da Eboli: legittimazione e delegittimazione del sovrano
Coronations, as a liturgical ritual cooperating in consent organization around sovereigns and imperators, are able to justify power assumption. This event, expression of divine favor and predestination, ratified the right to rule, and ceremony description, done by poets and historiographers, was a powerful expedient of legitimation, but also a sharp instrument of delegitimation. This function is evident also in the manuscript containing Petrus de Ebulo’s Carmen de motibus Siculis, which provide to us an elaborated description about Henry VI’s ceremony of imperial consacration and Tancredi’s from Lecce coronation as king of the Regnum. In the work, we can attend the evident inversion of colors that poet uses to dye two differents perspectives: on the on hand the usurper Tancredi, who is mocked and sneered by Peter, on the other Henry VI, celebrated and lauded as a divin expression of God
Bâtards e bâtardise nella Napoli aragonese: la "dignissima prole" di Ferrante I
The majority of Italian and European Renaissance princes were of spurious origins. Even the King of Naples Ferrante I, the illegitimate son of Alfonso the Magnanimous, had eight bastards. This research intends to analyse the phenomenon of the Aragonese bastardy, highlighting its peculiarities and the differences with other royal families within the Europe
We can follow the academic career of Gioacchino Volpe through the story of hisrecruitment, from the first test, that dates back to 1899 to the achievement of the titleof professor. Besides, we investigate the development of his relationship and then thebreakdown with his master, Amedeo Crivellucci, as well as with his friend GaetanoSalvemini, who was his competitor on a couple of occasions. The research was carriedout in the light of disagreements derived from their changing relationships. Atthe same time, we investigate the consequences of these connections, once marred, onthe end of the review «Studi storici» and on the first steps of the emerging «NuovaRivista Storica»
Support Vector Regression to Accelerate Design and Crosspolar Optimization of Shaped-Beam Reflectarray Antennas for Space Applications
A machine learning technique is applied to the design and optimization of reflectarray antennas to considerably accelerate computing time without compromising accuracy. In particular, Support Vector Machines (SVMs), automatic learning structures that are able to deal with regression problems, are employed to obtain surrogate models of the reflectarray element to substitute the full-wave analysis tool for the characterization of the unit cell in the design and optimization algorithms. The analysis, design and optimization of a very large reflectarray antenna for Direct Broadcast Satellite applications are accelerated up to three orders of magnitude. This is here demonstrated with three examples: one showing the design of a reflectarray; and two for the crosspolar optimization, one with one coverage for each linear polarization (Europe and the Middle East) and another with a Middle East coverage working in dual-linear polarization. The accuracy of the proposed approach is validated by means of a comparison of the final designs with full-wave simulations based on local periodicity obtaining good agreement. The crosspolar dicrimination and crosspolar isolation are greatly improved using the SVMs while considerably reducing computing time. This work was supported in part by the European Space Agency (ESA) under contract ESTEC/AO/1-7064/12/NL/MH; by the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades under projects TEC2017-86619-R (ARTEINE); by the Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad under project TEC2016-75103-C2-1-R (MYRADA); and by the Gobierno del Principado de Asturias through Programa "Clarín" de Ayudas Postdoctorales / Marie Curie-Cofund under project ACA17-09
Effects of continuous embankments and successive run-of-the-river dams on bedload transport capacities along the Rhône River, France
This study was aimed at untangling the relative impacts of successive phases of human modifications on changes in bedload transport along a 430 km-long river reach: the Rhône River from Motz dam to the sea. We used a 1D hydraulic model to solve for water lines across a range of discharges and all along the reach. Next, using grain sizes measured in the channel, we estimate flow competence and mean annual bedload transport capacities using the Recking (2013) bedload transport equation. In addition, we used the Generalized Threshold Model to estimate the relative fine and coarse fractions of the load. Bedload transport estimates were carried out under present-day hydraulic conditions and compared to estimates based on model runs simulating an unimpeded flow regime and using grain sizes measured in bars as a proxy for conditions prior to armouring.
Our results show that present-day bedload transport along the Rhône is significantly fragmented by multiple closely spaced dams. Mean annual bedload capacity varies between 2500 and 16,300 m3/year over all the reaches, with an average of 4700 m3/year. Results of the GTM analysis suggest that this load is composed of 89% fines. We find bed sediment mobility to be very low in most reaches, and that potentially mobile sediments are finer than the median grain size in the riverbed even at high flows. Our results suggest that bedload capacities were 25–35 times higher prior to bed armouring and flow modifications; dams had an impact 2–3 times more important on transport capacities than channel embankments, and bed armouring was foremost a response to channel embankments. Based on an analysis of the ratio of sediment yields to transport capacities, we propose a conceptual scheme illustrating how bedload supply, channel morphology, and surface texture coevolved in the Rhône over the past century and half. This study was conducted within the Rhône Sediment Observatory (OSR), a multi-partner research program funded through the Plan Rhône by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Agence de l'eau RMC, CNR, EDF and three regional councils (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, PACA and Occitanie). Correlation of Micro-Computed Tomography Assessment of Valvular Mineralisation with Histopathological and Immunohistochemical Features of Calcific Aortic Valve Disease
Aortic valve stenosis is a serious disease with increasing prevalence in developed countries. Research aimed at uncovering the molecular mechanisms behind its main cause, aortic valve calcification, is thus crucial for the development of future therapies. It is frequently difficult to measure the extent of mineralisation in soft tissues and some methods require the destruction of the sample. Micro-computed tomography (µCT), a non-destructive technique, was used to quantify the density and volume of calcium deposits on cusps from 57 explanted aortic valves. Conventional and immunostaining techniques were used to characterise valve tissue degeneration and the inflammatory and osteogenic stage with several markers. Although most of the analysed cusps came from severe stenosis patients, the µCT parameter bone volume/tissue volume ratio distinguished several degrees of mineralisation that correlated with the degree of structural change in the tissue and the amount of macrophage infiltration as determined by CD68 immunohistochemistry. Interestingly, exosomal markers CD63 and Alix co-localised with macrophage infiltration surrounding calcium deposits, suggesting that those vesicles could be produced at least in part by these immune cells. In conclusion, we have shown that the ex vivo assessment of aortic valve mineralisation with µCT reflects the molecular and cellular changes in pathological valves during progression towards stenosis. Thus, our results give additional validity to quantitative μCT as a convenient laboratory tool for basic research on this type of cardiovascular calcification. This work was financed by the Spanish National Plan for Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation 2013-2016; ISCIII–FEDER/ERDF (PI1800694); Thematic Network for Collaborative Research in Health RETICS REDinREN from ISCIII (RD16/0009/0005); and Fundación Asturcor. Reflectarray Antennas for 5-G Indoor Coverage
A reflectarray antenna at 28 GHz is proposed to be used as a base station in 5-G indoor communications. The reflectarray is integrated in an office and the near-field radiated over a desktop surface is simulated. Since the near-field is not properly focused on the area defined for 5-G coverage, an optimization of the reflectarray is required. The generalized Intersection Approach algorithm is employed to optimize the radiated field at the plane of the desktop surface in order to improve the coverage area. Then, a comparison between the near-field before and after the optimization is carried out, showing a significant improvement of the coverage area. In addition, other planes are analyzed, allowing to extend the results from the optimized plane to others. This work has been supported in part by the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades under project TEC2017-86619-R (ARTEINE); by the Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad under project TEC2016-75103-C2-1-R (MYRADA); and by the Gobierno del Principado de Asturias through Programa "Clarín" de Ayudas Postdoctorales / Marie Curie-Cofund under project ACA17-09.13th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation (EuCAP
