Directorium bugiardorum. A Nicolas Eymerich’s story
Beowulf by All. Community Translation and Workbook
This is a community translation of the earliest English epic poem. Beowulf tells the story of a mythical hero in northern Europe in, perhaps, the sixth century. Alongside his story, multiple other shorter narratives are told and many other voices are heard, making it a rich and varied account of the poet’s views of heroism, conflict, loyalty, and the human condition.
The poem is widely taught in schools and universities, and has been adapted, modernized, and translated dozens of times, but this is the first large-scale polyvocal translation.
Readers will encounter the voices of over two hundred individuals, woven together into a reading experience that is at once productively dissonant, yet strangely coherent in its extreme variation. We hope that it turns the common question "Why do we need yet another translation?" on its head, asking instead, "How can we hear from more translators?," and "How can previously unheard, or marginalized voices, find space, like this, in the world of Old English Studies?" With this in mind we invite a new generation of readers to try their own hand at translating Beowulf in the workbook space provided opposite this community translation.
It is often through the effort of translating that we see the reality of the original

ENGLISH: The paper retraces the preliminary cognitive activities and the phases of the restoration site of the church pavement in the Santuario di Maria SS. di Gulfi, in Chiaramonte Gulfi (Sicily).
ENGLISH: The architectural configuration of the Collegio dei SS. Agostino e Tommaso in Agrigento is the result of a centuries-old growth process for aggregations and revisions around the fourteenth
century founding nucleus. Its internal courtyard is therefore defined through a procedural evolutionary path and one of its sides shows the traces of the original Chiaramontes’ Palace. The contribution is intended to present a summary of the reflections that led to the definition of the restoration project, its cultural matrices, the phases of the analytical study of the materials and the salient aspects of the restoration site, with particular attention to the conservation of
the fourteenth-century front, intended as a palimpsest of stratified signs
"Vocabatur vulgo Ingenitus".
ENGLISH: The practice of performing a Caesarean section on a living woman in order to save both mother and child was conceived by the physician and surgeon François Rousset in his short treatise, written in French, at the end of the 16th century. Until then, only the opening of the dead mother’s womb had been discussed and practiced for the safety of the child, with both legal and religious implications. After Rousset’s work, medieval tales about children who had survived the operation came back into consideration in medical and religious texts in order to convince the readers that a “caesarean section” on a dead woman could be successful. But the children mentioned in the tales were uncommon: they were saints or kings and, in the Middle Ages, their survival was perceived as a miraculous event. In the same period, different kinds of miracle tales
related to the “caesarean section” were written, and some even described the opening of a living mother’s womb. The article aims at analysing these stories in the cultural context in which they were written, taking into account coeval medical obstetrical knowledge, as well as dissertations (both religious and legal) and legends on the practice of opening of a pregnant woman’s womb

Irato animo: Performing Anger in Late Medieval Istria
The author analyzes the performances of anger in the context of interpersonal confrontations in the communities of late medieval Istria subjected to Venice. The first part of the study outlines the theoretical, methodological, and conceptual framework within which the study is embedded, demonstrating that the European Middle Ages inherited a moral tradition that saw anger as both a condemnable and praise-worthy emotion. The second part presents the results of the analysis of over a hundred cases of interpersonal conflict in which the performance of anger played a seminal role. The author concludes that the role of anger in these societies was intimately tied to defending one’s personal honor and upholding the existing social hierarchies. Although anger did not acquire a more pronounced legal dimension, it was still tacitly tolerated by the Venetian authorities if it was deemed that it had been properly performed by following a set script of personal confrontations
