    Get PDF
ENGLISH: Starting from the most important results of Campopiano's work, the contribution highlights how the recipients of the cultural memory shaped by the friars of Mount Sion were a much wider circle than the “pilgrims” who went to the Holy Land. It then discusses three main issues. Firstly, it considers the different social and political profiles of the European pilgrims, the variety of expectations of the people who visited Mount Sion, supported with money these places, sustained the status of the Franciscan Custody with political and diplomatic activities carried out in the European chancelleries. Within this framework it is examined the multiplicity of factors that urge the friars of the 14th c. to build the geographical and cultural centrality of the Holy Land entirely re-sacralised in Franciscan terms, implementing it during the next three centuries. Finally, it is proposed the enlargement of the texts that must be examined and correlated with the fundamental sources analysed by the author. Above all, the texts produced by the Franciscans of the Custody should be investigated, in order to organize their economic and political life within the Muslim territories dominated first by the Mamluks and then by the Ottoman sultans

    Get PDF

Lothar’s manuscripts, manuscripts for Lothar, manuscripts of Lothar’s time

    Get PDF
This paper aims to give an account of some of the manuscripts related to Lothar. In its first section an attempt is made at retracing a set of books that could have belonged to Lothar’s library, nowadays known only from secondary sources. In the second section some display codices are discussed, either commissioned by Lothar, or dedicated to him, such as Lothar’s Gospel Book MS Par. lat. 266 or those traditionally referred to as the Lothar-Gruppe, whose actual connection both to Lothar and to each other is questioned here. The third and last part of the paper contains some considerations on the manuscripts produced during the years of Lothar’s government in Italy, that essentially coincide with the second quarter of the ninth century

Cassiodorus’ Variae in the 9th Century

    Get PDF
The fate of Cassiodorus’ Variae during the Early Middle Ages is largely unknown, since the manuscript tradition begins with the eleventh century, and long quotations taken from them are attested only from that period. However, words or expressions reminiscent of the Variae occur more than once in Charlemagne’s letters to Byzantium, in the works of Paschasius, and in the Donation of Constantine. The author of the epistles sent by Charlemagne to the East Roman em- peror was aware of the ideological context of Variae I, 1, and the same is true for the Donation of Constantine. At the same time, Paschasius used Cassiodorus as a source of elegant words and expressions, thereby treating him like a classical author. It is impossible to ascertain whether Carolingian writers had access to all books of the Variae, or only to a substantial selection of letters (similar for instance to the manuscript containing the Epistolae Austrasicae), but there is a high degree of likelihood that they knew quite a few epistles of Cassiodorus, and were able to appreciate the political messages conveyed by them

Representations of Lothar I in the Liber pontificalis Ravennatis

Lothar looms large in the Liber pontificalis of Ravenna, an episcopal gesta composed after 846 by a local cleric of that city named Agnellus. In its prefatory verse, Lothar was tied to the memory of his grandfather Charlemagne, and afterwards was presented as an ally of the city and its church, a relationship sealed by the service of the bishop George (837-846) as godfather to Lothar’s daughter Rotruda. Furthermore, upon the death of Louis the Pious, as part of an embassy attempting to resolve the conflicts between Lothar and his brothers, George sought to affirm Ravenna privileges on the eve of the battle of Fontenoy, an event described quite differently from other sources. Completed following these struggles, the Liber pontificalis of Ravenna used this image of Lothar to further claims of the special status of the city, especially in its independence from Rome and longstanding imperial connections, and actively sought to legitimize Lothar’s own position through a juxtaposition with Charlemagne. Although preserved in the accounts of the bishops of Ravenna, the singular efforts to elevate and memorialize Lothar differ from other contemporary institutional chronicles, and underscore the tension inherent in the narrative

ENGLISH: On his way back to Austrasia after the imperial coronation in Rome (800), Charlemagne ordered to transfer to Aachen the bronze equestrian statue depicting the Arian king Theodoric that was placed in front of the palatium in Ravenna. Scholarship argued that this choice does not seem coherent with Charles' role as a Catholic ruler and defender of the Church of Rome, and that it should be solely explained with the emperor’s appreciation for the monument's aesthetic qualities. By pursuing a different approach, this essay argues that the transfer of the statue from Ravenna to Aachen should be considered as an essentially political decision, which in turn is to be interconnected with the various meanings of Theodoric's equestrian monument

ENGLISH: The essay studies the course of Dante studies of the historian Ovidio Capitani (1930-2012). The historian of the Middle Ages in fact began his interest in Dante Alighieri as an undergraduate under the impulse of Bruno Nardi, in Rome. Later, Capitani selected a small personal Dante anthology (mostly from the "Monarchia", and less from the "Commedia") on which he continued to study until the end of his career. Likewise, Capitani’s bibliographical interlocutors as a Dante scholar were strictly selected by the historian. Between 1961 and 2007, therefore, Ovidio Capitani’s Dante activity represented a singular and intricate hermeneutic circle; with, perhaps, the historian rather than the Poet at its centre
