The Centres of Public Power Between the Cities and the Countryside in the Light of the Recent Archaeology (Italian Peninsula, Late 5th-9th Century)

    Get PDF
The paper aims to illustrate, especially through the results of recent archaeological studies, the articulation and forms of the centres of public power between the Gothic and the Carolingian periods, in the dialectic between the city, as a seat of the institutions and their protagonists, and the countryside, which contains the production centres and the natural resources. We will consider the Italian territory, with a focus on Tuscany, and propose some comparisons with the rest of Europe. An architectural, artistic and topographical resilience emerges. It is probably the consequence of the continuity of a series of elements: the public ownership of particular urban and suburban areas and palaces, as well as of rural strategic sites; the use of languages and models of the Late Roman aristocracy, and the economic impoverishment of the early medieval rulers

Gli scritti danteschi di Ernesto Sestan

    Get PDF
ENGLISH: The beginning of the essays examines the reasons why the university teachers of medieval history in Florence (from Gaetano Salvemini to Giovanni Cherubini) paid little attention to the historical figure of Dante. After that, the author examines five essays that Ernesto Sestan wrote on the occasion of the 1965 centenary. The themes under study are Dante’s relationship with Florence, his political thought, his vision of history and the use of historical people in the "Commedia"

ENGLISH: Starting from a review of the work of Michele Campopiano Writing the Holy Land, this paper analyses the forms and the texts used by the friars of the Franciscan convent of Mount Sion in Jerusalem in the construction of a collective memory of holy places mediated through the written word. The paper also emphasizes the effective use of different methodological approaches in the study of the sources present in the library of Mount Sion, which were reused in new compilations and miscellaneous manuscripts

Networks of bishops, networks of texts. Manuscripts, legal cultures, tools of government in Carolingian Italy at the time of Lothar I. Conclusions

The summary highlights the extent to which the articles collected in the volume go beyond previous research on bishops and open up new perspectives: The contributions no longer only ask about the “hard power” of bishops. Instead, they focus on episcopal “soft power”: they impressively show that bishops knew how to use books, pen and ink to manipulate ideas and convictions and to reframe discourses. A basis for this new approach is provided by the scans of medieval manuscripts, which are now made available by libraries in Europe in large numbers and excellent quality

    Creando Sinergia 2019

    No full text

IX-XI)

    Get PDF
ENGLISH: Over forty years of research in the Tuscan Maremma, one of the best archeologically investigated territories in Europe; an ERC-Advanced project, nEU-Med, which made it possible to re-read old data and produce new ones thanks to intense multidisciplinary research; a theme, public goods, in recent years at the center of the interest of the historians of documentary sources, here declined through the material data. These are the starting points of the volume, in which the results acquired from research in recent years within an area chosen as a case study, have been grafted onto those developed in previous decades, with the aim of identifying the material markers of royal assets and understand their formation and management between the IX-XIth and IX-XIth centuries. The results of the research interpreted in a new perspective combine to identify a possible key to interpret the historical realities of this Tuscan area, capable of generating responses linked to broader themes: the role of the publicum in relation to aristocracies and local communities; the transformations of anthropogenic and natural landscapes; the peculiarity of productions and exchanges; the times and methods of the fortification; the economic growth of the countryside before the great leap forward of the IX-XIth century
