«Per Padum fluvium termino currente usque […] Civitatem Novam atque Mutinam». Consolidation and affirmation of the Church of Modena and its bishops in 9th-century Carolingian Italy
This paper seeks to trace the developments which led the Church of Modena and its bishops to acquire a pre-eminent position in its diocese in the second half of the ninth century and for much of the following one. The analysis sets out from the highly fragmented post-Roman territorial context and from the efforts made by Lombard kings, which were mostly directed towards the fiscal estate of Cittanova, rather than the ancient Roman civitas of Mutina. Particular
attention is paid to the figure of Bishop Leodoin and to the manuscripts attributed to him in the Chapter Library, especially the famous Codex legum (O.I.2), for which a different production context is suggested, prior to its acquisition by the Church of Modena
ENGLISH: In the second half of the 19th century and in the first decades of the following century, historians and literary scholars in the cities of the Veneto region dealt intensively with Dante and his works. Much research was dedicated to the traces of the poet’s presence in this or that place. The role of Verona, Dante’s city par excellence, was central. However, one theme imposed itself: studies on the "De monarchia", in connection with the problem of the relationship between State and Church. This gave rise to debates and contrasts between scholars in the Catholicliberal tradition (such as Carlo Cipolla) and secular scholars (such as Gerolamo Biscaro)
The two versions of the life of Pope Sergius II in the Liber pontificalis. Anti-Frankish feeling in Rome after Louis II’s expedition of 844
The analysis of the two versions of the life of Pope Sergius II (844-847) published by Louis Duchesne in his edition of the Liber pontificalis aims at identifying and discussing the tools developed by the Lateran to illustrate the relationship between the Apostolic See and Carolingian
power at the time of the Emperor Lothar. I will first present the two versions of the life of Sergius and their circulation, then highlight the rhetorical strategies employed by the author to diminish the political significance of Louis II’s journey to Rome (844). Secondly, I will refer to the second part of the so-called Farnesianus version of the life of Sergius II. In this particular
section, the author, before the incomplete report of the Saracen raid on the mouth of the Tiber and the sack of S. Peter’s Basilica (846), critically describes the pontificate of Sergius II, dominated by the negative figure of the pontiff’s brother, Benedict, who imposed his tyranny over
Rome and its territory on behalf of the emperor (most likely as a missus on the imperial side). In this regard, it is interesting to evaluate which are the concealed arguments introduced here to represent the alleged effects of the application of the Constitutio Romana (824) on the socio-political structures of the city and on the history of the Roman Church, to offer a hypothesis on the context of the composition of this version of the life of Sergius II. In particular, I will dwell on the denouncing of the simoniacal heresy, shown to have been triumphant during the pontificate
of Sergius II, as sign of the re-emergence in Rome of a theme particularly strongly felt among the Carolingian reformers, and one which can perhaps be most associated with the pontificate of Sergius’ successor Leo IV (847-855)
Creando Sinergia 2022
On the Use of an Equivalent Currents-Based Technique to Improve Electromagnetic Imaging
Accurate imaging from scattered field measurements is one of the main research topics in the field of non-destructive testing. Different methodologies for inverse scattering have been developed, ranging from backpropagation techniques to full-wave inversion methods. While far-field approaches are valid for the majority of the imaging systems, there are some scenarios where these approaches do not provide accurate modeling of the field radiated by the antennas of the imaging system. This results in some kind of distortion in the resulting output microwave images. To address this issue, proper characterization and modeling of the fields radiated by the antennas are required. This contribution proposes the use of an equivalent currents-based technique to characterize the transmitting and receiving antennas of the imaging sensor. The goal is to calculate accurately the field radiated by these antennas within the imaging domain, using it in the backpropagation algorithm. The methodology described in this contribution is supported by measurements for monostatic and multistatic configurations.

Vitamin D Treatment Prevents Uremia-Induced Reductions in Aortic microRNA-145 Attenuating Osteogenic Differentiation despite Hyperphosphatemia
In chronic kidney disease, systemic inflammation and high serum phosphate (P) promote the de-differentiation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) to osteoblast-like cells, increasing the propensity for medial calcification and cardiovascular mortality. Vascular microRNA-145 (miR-145) content is essential to maintain VSMC contractile phenotype. Because vitamin D induces aortic miR-145, uremia and high serum P reduce it and miR-145 directly targets osteogenic osterix in osteoblasts, this study evaluated a potential causal link between vascular miR-145 reductions and osterix-driven osteogenic differentiation and its counter-regulation by vitamin D. Studies in aortic rings from normal rats and in the rat aortic VSMC line A7r5 exposed to calcifying conditions corroborated that miR-145 reductions were associated with decreases in contractile markers and increases in osteogenic differentiation and calcium (Ca) deposition. Furthermore, miR-145 silencing enhanced Ca deposition in A7r5 cells exposed to calcifying conditions, while miR-145 overexpression attenuated it, partly through increasing α-actin levels and reducing osterix-driven osteogenic differentiation. In mice, 14 weeks after the induction of renal mass reduction, both aortic miR-145 and α-actin mRNA decreased by 80% without significant elevations in osterix or Ca deposition. Vitamin D treatment from week 8 to 14 fully prevented the reductions in aortic miR-145 and attenuated by 50% the decreases in α-actin, despite uremia-induced hyperphosphatemia. In conclusion, vitamin D was able to prevent the reductions in aortic miR-145 and α-actin content induced by uremia, reducing the alterations in vascular contractility and osteogenic differentiation despite hyperphosphatemia

Conspiracies frustrate contemporaries, historiographers, and historians. This article explores
roles, focalization, and confession in three conspiracies related to Italy, from the sixth, fourth, and ninth centuries respectively. The protagonists include Boethius, Silvanus, and Theodulf of Orléans. The main contribution is a philological and historiographical re-evaluation of Theodulf’s role in the revolt of Bernard of Italy against Louis the Pious (817-818), arguing that Theodulf advised Louis about the punishment of the conspirators. Boethius first emerges as a his torico-political exemplum (though his Consolatio) in Modoin’s rescriptum (Theodulf, Carmen
73 [820-821])
