The Cult of Saints and Legitimization of Elite Power in East Central and Northern Europe up to 1300
While Northern and East Central Europe are often considered to have been peripheral parts of medieval Latin Christendom, they nevertheless embraced many of the same cultural impulses found in more central areas. Key among these was the way in which social elites, in the first centuries after the introduction of Christianity, recognized the potential to exploit the cult of saints as a way of legitimizing their own social standing. Taking this thematic focus as its starting point, this volume explores the intersection of religion, power, and the reception and development of new impulses from abroad within Northern and East Central Europe. It does so by comparing and contrasting cults that emerged locally with cults that were imported to the region. Through this comparative overview, the chapters of this volume not only contribute to a more nuanced understanding of these outlying regions, but also shed new light on Latin Christian Europe as a whole
The issue of multilingualism in the Norman Kingdom of Sicily
is a theme which has been written about extensively: the question of the three “languages of the king” (Greek, Arabic, Latin) has been fascinating enough to stimulate a long historiography - this paper would not reiterate - on the sovereign’s linguistic policy, the nature of its ideology, or on the imperial dimension of its power. We would rather propose a renewed approach on the question
on the basis of the distinction between Imperial languages and languages of Empire that could emphasize the special “imperial” status of Greek and Arabic, and, by contrast, enlighten the least imperial dimension of the Latin
language. This latter conveys definitively less “second-hand imperiality” than the previous ones, at least for the first Hauteville sovereign
Das Mittelalter. Perspektiven mediävistischer Forschung Zeitschrift des Mediävistenverbandes. Bd. 28 Nr. 1 (2023): Die ‚Sieben weisen Meister‘ als globale Erzähltradition/The ‘Seven Sages of Rome’ as a Global Narrative Tradition
ENGLISH: The ‘Seven Sages of Rome’ was one of the most widely distributed story matters of premodernity. It was transmitted in at least 30 languages from Arabic to Russian across Asia, Europe and the Middle and Near East from the 11th to the 19th centuries. Nevertheless, this tradition is still little known and rarely researched in Mediaeval Studies. This special issue proposes that the ‘Seven Sages of Rome’ is ripe for rediscovery, and for bringing together and giving new perspectives on current and interdisciplinary approaches in Mediaeval and Early Modern Studies. This includes transmission studies, intersectional analysis and global approaches to literary history
Das Mittelalter. Perspektiven mediävistischer Forschung Zeitschrift des Mediävistenverbandes. Bd. 28 Nr. 2 (2023): Medieval Animal Studies.
ENGLISH: What is the position of interdisciplinary Medieval Studies within current trends in Animal Studies? What potential do the methods, theorems, and critical reflections of Animal Studies have for the analysis of medieval sources? What contribution can decidedly Medieval Animal Studies make to contemporary discussions and conceptualisations? With these questions in mind, the studies in this issue focus on reflections, imaginations, and forms of practice of human–animal relations in the Middle Ages, which they discuss from different disciplinary perspectives and thus contribute to a historicisation of the concepts of contemporary Animal Studies
ENGLISH: The essay looks into the troubled relationship between sovereign power and feudal power in the

Beni fiscali e attività minerario-metallurgiche nell’Italia centro-settentrionale (secoli VIII-XI)
ENGLISH: The paper intends to compose in an overall synthesis the archaeological and documentary data
on mining and metallurgical production in the main mining areas of the Italic kingdom (Alps, Tuscany including the island of Elba) between the 8th and 11th centuries, in order to assess the level of control and, as far as possible, the way in which this productive sector was managed by the public power. Another focus of attention will be the circulation of essential raw materials such as metals within the economic structure that was under the control of the royal authority, or through properly commercial circuits. The point of arrival is identified in the transition phase
from an early medieval production system – in which the eminent role of the publicum on the exploitation of deposits were probably very binding – towards the fragmentation of production rights in the hands of multiple subjects (late 11th century)
Why fiscal estates matter: some concluding thoughts on the economic importance of public goods
possessori. / ENGLISH: This article offers some food for thought based on the articles in the dossier on tax property in Italy (with a contribution on the Middle Meuse). It points out five specific aspects that deserve discussion: 1° the more or less restrictive definition of the concept of fiscus 2° that of the strategic importance of the control of resources (fuel, ore, energy) in these fiscal properties 3° the problem of the organisation of work and the presence of corvée on fiscal properties 4° the way in which wealth circulated, according to interpretative models alternative to trade before the dissolution of the Ottonian order, in Italy, and the paradigm shift caused by the commercial
boom – with its links with cities 5° the overall economic consequences, in the medium and long term, of the redistribution of fiscal properties into the hands of other owners
ENGLISH:
