Low-level predation by lytic phage phiIPLA-RODI promotes biofilm formation and triggers the stringent response in Staphylococcus aureus.
An important lesson from the war on pathogenic bacteria has been the need to understand the physiological responses and evolution of natural microbial communities. Bacterial populations in the environment are generally forming biofilms subject to some level of phage predation. These multicellular communities are notoriously resistant to antimicrobials and, consequently, very difficult to eradicate. This has sparked the search for new therapeutic alternatives, including phage therapy. This study demonstrates that S. aureus biofilms formed in the presence of a non-lethal dose of phage phiIPLA-RODI exhibit a unique physiological state that could potentially benefit both the host and the predator. Thus, biofilms formed under phage pressure are thicker and have a greater DNA content. Also, the virus-infected biofilm displayed major transcriptional differences compared to an untreated control. Significantly, RNA-seq data revealed activation of the stringent response, which could slow down the advance of the bacteriophage within the biofilm. The end result would be an equilibrium that would help bacterial cells to withstand environmental challenges, while maintaining a reservoir of sensitive bacterial cells available to the phage upon reactivation of the dormant carrier population. This study was supported by grants AGL2012-40194-C02-01 (Ministry of Science and Innovation, Spain), AGL2015-65673-R (Program of Science, Technology and Innovation 2013-2017), GRUPIN14-139 (FEDER EU funds, Principado de Asturias, Spain). Calcium looping CO2 capture system for back-up power plants
This paper analyses a CO2 capture system based on calcium looping, designed for power plants that operate with very low capacity factors and large load fluctuations, including shut-down and start-up periods. This can be achieved by decoupling the operation of the carbonator and calciner reactors and connecting them to piles filled with CaO or CaCO3. When the power plant enters into operation, calcined solids are fed into the carbonator to provide the necessary flow of CaO for capturing CO2 and storing the carbonated solids. An oxy-CFB calciner designed to have a modest thermal capacity and operate continuously refills the CaO pile. Mass and energy balances of the entire system, combined with state-of-the-art performance criteria for reactor design, have been solved to identify suitable operating windows. An analysis of the effect of the CaO reactivity of the material stored in the piles indicates that temperatures of around 500–600 °C in the carbonator are compatible with the storage of solids at low temperature (<250 °C). This, together with the low inherent cost of the material, allows large piles of stored material. Electricity costs between 0.13–0.15 per kWhe when forced to operate at low capacity. The proposed concept could be integrated into existing power plants operating as back-ups in renewable energy systems in preference to other CO2 capture technologies that are heavily penalized when forced to operate under low capacity factors
Asymmetric biocatalytic synthesis of fluorinated pyridines through transesterification or transamination. Computational insights into the reactivity of transaminases.
The synthesis of a family of pyridines bearing a fluorinated substituent on the aromatic ring has been carried out through two independent and highly stereoselective chemoenzymatic strategies. Short chemical synthetic routes toward fluorinated racemic amines and prochiral ketones have been developed, which served as substrates to explore the suitability of lipases and transaminases in asymmetric biotransformations. The lipase-catalyzed kinetic resolution
via acylation of racemic amines proceeded smoothly giving conversions close to 50% and excellent
enantioselectivities. Alternatively, the biotransamination of the corresponding prochiral ketones was investigated giving access to both optically pure amine enantiomers using transaminases with complementary selectivity. High to quantitative conversion
values were achieved, which allowed the isolation of the amines in moderate to high yields (40–88%). A deeper understanding of the latter process was enabled by performing theoretical calculations on thermodynamic and mechanistic aspects. Calculations showed that the biotransamination reactions are highly favoured by the presence of fluorine atoms and the pyridine ring

Negación enfática y gramaticalización en asturiano: estructuras con "ná"
The reduced form of the negative quantifier nada, na, generates in Asturian the pattern of emphatic negation nun_V_na, in which the particle loses its quantitative content and, as a consequence of a grammaticalization process, it behaves as an intensifier of the sentential negation. This phenomenon of syntactic microvariation has been recorded in South Central Asturias, where ambiguous structures in which na can express quantity or negation coexist with others in which this item can only be interpreted as a postverbal negative marker with emphatic value (interpolation in verbal periphrasis and compatibility with negative DOs).Programa de ayudas postdoctorales Marie-Curie-Clarín-Cofund ACA14-11 (2014-2016)

Ritorno a Castelseprio. La ripresa delle indagini nel castrum e nel borgo
This report summarizes the activities and results of the archaeological investigations conducted by the Catholic University of Milan in Castelseprio (Varese) in 2016 and planned activities for 2017. An excavation was carried out in the medieval house in the south-western sector of the castle and two different phases of occupation have been documented. A sample excavation identified the underlying stratigraphy, allowing to retrieve data and finds from late ancient and early medieval settlement. A survey around the church of Santa Maria foris portas recognized some ancient accumulations, which proved to be collapsed walls of medieval buildings. These finds are the first traces of the "village" outside the castle and in the vicinity of the small church, well known for its important paintings
