Sicily has always been a territory under dispute by multiple peoples that eventually managed to mold the culture of the inhabitants of the island. As a result, the Sicilian language absorbed the language of the ensuing settlers, particularly Spanish and French. In view of this, this article addresses the analysis of the Spanish, French and Occitan traces, three Romance variants that, through the semantic superstratum, have had an impact on the linguistic configuration of the Sicilian language. With the focus on the dialectal lexicon used by the Palermitan writer, Giuseppina Torregrossa, in her debut novel, L’Assaggiatrice, this study confirms what previous specialized autho-rities on the field observed in past times: that the Ibero-Romance and Gallo-Romance influence have been, and still are, key to the shaping of the Sicilian language, a linguistic variant that is most frequently used in insular literature regardless of the growing social interest in standard Italian after the unification.

Micromachining of PMN-PT Crystals with Ultrashort Laser Pulses
Lead–magnesium niobate lead titanate (PMN-PT) has been proven as an excellent material for sensing and actuating applications. The fabrication of advanced ultra-small PMN-PT-based devices relies on the availability of sophisticated procedures for the micro-machining of PMN-PT thin films or bulk substrates. Approaches reported up to date include chemical etching, excimer laser ablation, and ion milling. To ensure an excellent device performance, a key mandatory feature for a micro-machining process is to preserve as far as possible the crystalline quality of the substrates; in other words, the fabrication method must induce a low density of cracks and other kind of defects. In this work, we demonstrate a relatively fast procedure for the fabrication of high-quality PMN-PT micro-machined actuators employing green femtosecond laser pulses. The fabricated devices feature the absence of extended cracks and well-defined edges with relatively low roughness, which is advantageous for the further integration of nanomaterials onto the piezoelectric actuators
A subset of low density granulocytes is associated with vascular calcification in chronic kidney disease patients
Inflammation is central to chronic kidney disease (CKD) pathogenesis and vascular outcomes, but the exact players remain unidentified. Since low density granulocytes (LDGs) are emerging mediators in inflammatory conditions, we aimed to evaluate whether LDGs may be altered in CKD and related to clinical outcomes as biomarkers. To his end, LDGs subsets were measured in peripheral blood by flow cytometry and confocal microscopy in 33 CKD patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis and 15 healthy controls (HC). Analyses were replicated in an additional cohort. DEF3 (marker of early granulopoiesis) gene expression on PBMCs was quantified by qPCR. Total CD15+ LDGs and both CD14lowCD16+ and CD14-CD16- subsets were expanded in CKD. The relative frequency of the CD14-CD16- subpopulation was higher among the CD15+ pool in CKD. This alteration was stable over-time. The increased CD14-CD16-CD15+ paralleled Kauppila scores and DEF3 expression, whereas no association was found with CD14lowCD16+ CD15+. Both subsets differed in their CD11b, CD10, CD35, CD31, CD62L, IFNAR1 and CD68 expression, FSC/SSC features and nuclear morphology, pointing to different origins and maturation status. In conclusion, LDGs were expanded in CKD showing a skewed distribution towards a CD14-CD16-CD15+ enrichment, in association with vascular calcification. DEF3 expression in PBMC can be a marker of LDG expansion
L’ipotesi di un matrimonio della principessa longobarda Gerberga con Carlomanno risulta suffragata da una serie di elementi che restituiscono una lettura meno lineare delle relazioni politiche tra il regno dei Franchi, il papato e il regno dei Longobardi nell’intervallo compreso tra il 768 e il 772 ca. / ENGLISH: Recent studies on Charlemagne and Desiderius have prompted reflections on the controversial issue, which has been long debated by historians, of the supposed marriage between Charlemagne and one of the daughters of the last King of the Lombards. The aim of this article is to overturn the conclusions that the most historians have drawn about this marriage, and to demonstrate that it did not take place between the Lombard princess and Charles, but between the former and Charles’ brother Carloman. Einhard’s Vita Karoli is the first source to claim that the Lombard princess married Emperor Charles. After a critical analysis of this biography, the article assesses all those sources that are chronologically closer to the event, and which until now have either received little attention or not been explored at all. A picture emerges that completely contradicts the traditional understanding of the Lombard-Frankish marriage. This new hypothesis of a marriage between the Lombard princess Gerberga and Carloman is supported by several clues that provide a far more nuanced and less linear interpretation of the political relationship among the Franks, the papacy and the Lombard Kingdom between 768 and 772
ENGLISH: In the 8th century, the juridical organisation for dispute and conflict resolution in the Lombard duchy of Benevento made use of different legal institutions: legal procedure, written law, the principle of aequitas, custom, transactions. The extant judicial documentation demonstrates that Lombard juridical organization was neither “primitive” nor “rudimentary”. On the contra- ry, it was very complex and presupposed the coexistence – within a single “state” – of multiple legal subsets, with distinct institutions and authorities in charge of enforcing them. Apart from reconstructing the judicial organization of the Lombard duchy, this inquiry aims at identifying the different judiciary offices, their internal structure, their competences in terms of subject matter and territory, and, lastly, their internal hierarchy
ENGLISH: The paper illustrates the relationship of mutual support and motivation that developed in the
mid-nineteenth century between the milieu of the Deputazione subalpina di storia patria (in which Luigi Cibrario played an important role) and the scholars of the Piedmontese cities (most of them members of the Deputazione themselves), who in the 1870s published several local histories,
making broad used of unpublished documentation. Among others, the paper considers Casimiro Turletti (Savigliano), Giuseppe Manuel di San Giovanni (Dronero), Vittorio Mandelli

Curial Sources and Digital Humanities. Long term projects in international comparison. Introduzione
ENGLISH: In March 2018 a conference took place at the German Historical Institute (DHI) in Rome about the significance of the Digital Humanities for the evaluation of the curial sources. The Repertorium Germanicum (RG) as part of the above-mentioned institute edits the source material of
the Archivio Segreto Vaticano and of further, mainly Roman archives concerning the history of the territories and dioceses of the German Empire, which reach far beyond the borders of modern Germany. Due to these dimension of the RG a Europe-wide comparison of similar projects is made by seven case studies of authors from five countries.
