The article reconstructs the career and activities of Andrea Gloria, who from around the
1850s to the end of the century was not only lecturer in Paleography at the University of
Padua, but also in charge of the cultural institutions of the city. These institutions (the
museum, the Archivio civico antico, the civic library, the art gallery) took shape in the early
decades of the nineteenth century and were later integrated in the Museo Civico, directed
by Andrea Gloria.

ENGLISH: The article addresses antiquarianism in Naples between 1840 and 1880. It starts from the VII Congress of Scientists (1845), an exceptional gathering opportunity for southern scholars, and then illustrates the main venues for cultural debate in Naples: the city archives and the Società
dello Stato unitario italiano.
ENGLISH: The paper emphasizes the importance of the connection between urban antiquarianism, the organization of culture and the construction of the Italian unitary state. Particular emphasis is placed on the necessary problematization of the center-periphery relationship in Italian history, starting
precisely from the role played by local cultural institutions (libraries and archives) and the density
of the intellectual networks that connected the various territories of the Italian Peninsula
The Middle-Class Entrepreneurial Elite in Šibenik and Split (15th Century)
The paper explores the entrepreneurial elite of late medieval Šibenik and Split, based on the examples of prominent businessmen in the historical records preserved in the
notarial records of the two cities
ENGLISH: Thanks to a particularly fortunate situation in terms of documentary preservation (as concerns both the antiquity and the amount of available material), Liguria’s two chief cities, Genoa and Savona, are an exceptional starting point for an attempt at establishing the actual income of a medieval notary. The research has been conducted on the fragments, both edited and unpublished, of registers belonging to 24 notaries, beginning from the oldest surviving cartulary (of Giovanni scriba, 1154) up to those dating from the first quarter of the thirteenth century. By collecting references to fees paid for different types of contracts it has been possible to reconstruct a draft of a “price list”. This draft has been used as a basis to calculate an approximate income. A comparison of this data with the “cost of living” during this period allows to evaluate the economic status of this professional category, the way notaries invested their incomes, and their social status
ENGLISH: This paper analyses the role played by the female religious community of San Zaccaria in the political,
social and religious context of the Venetian Dogado during the Early Middle Ages. On the one hand, by comparing the convent with the other Venetian male and female monasteries, the study clarifies that the community exercised a more or less incisive role in representing first the doge’s family, then the entire city, during a specific timeframe. On the other hand, the analysis reveals to what extent the functions the monastery exercised were influenced by events external to the Dogado or by developments within San Zaccaria itself
Chromatin regulation by Histone H4 acetylation at Lysine 16 during cell death and differentiation in the myeloid compartment
Histone H4 acetylation at Lysine 16 (H4K16ac) is a key epigenetic mark involved in gene regulation, DNA repair and chromatin remodeling, and though it is known to be essential for embryonic development, its role during adult life is still poorly understood. Here we show that this lysine is massively hyperacetylated in peripheral neutrophils. Genome-wide mapping of H4K16ac in terminally differentiated blood cells, along with functional experiments, supported a role for this histone post-translational modification in the regulation of cell differentiation and apoptosis in the hematopoietic system. Furthermore, in neutrophils, H4K16ac was enriched at specific DNA repeats. These DNA regions presented an accessible chromatin conformation and were associated with the cleavage sites that generate the 50 kb DNA fragments during the first stages of programmed cell death. Our results thus suggest that H4K16ac plays a dual role in myeloid cells as it not only regulates differentiation and apoptosis, but it also exhibits a non-canonical structural role in poising chromatin for cleavage at an early stage of neutrophil cell death
Barley-ss-glucans reduce systemic inflammation, renal injury and aortic calcification through ADAM17 and neutral-sphingomyelinase2 inhibition
In chronic kidney disease (CKD), hyperphosphatemia-induced inflammation aggravates vascular calcification (VC) by increasing vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) osteogenic differentiation, ADAM17-induced renal and vascular injury, and TNFa-induction of neutral-sphingomyelinase2 (nSMase2) to release pro-calcifying exosomes. This study examined anti-inflammatory beta-glucans efficacy at attenuating systemic inflammation in health, and renal and vascular injury favoring VC in hyperphosphatemic CKD. In healthy adults, dietary barley beta-glucans (B beta glucans) reduced leukocyte superoxide production, inflammatory ADAM17, TNF alpha, nSMase2, and pro-aging/pro-inflammatory STING (Stimulator of interferon genes) gene expression without decreasing circulating inflammatory cytokines, except for gamma-interferon. In hyperphosphatemic rat CKD, dietary Bssglucans reduced renal and aortic ADAM17-driven inflammation attenuating CKD-progression (higher GFR and lower serum creatinine, proteinuria, kidney inflammatory infiltration and nSMase2), and TNF alpha-driven increases in aortic nSMase2 and calcium deposition without improving mineral homeostasis. In VSMC, B beta glucans prevented LPS- or uremic serum-induced rapid increases in ADAM17, TNF alpha and nSMase2, and reduced the 13-fold higher calcium deposition induced by prolonged calcifying conditions by inhibiting osteogenic differentiation and increases in nSMase2 through Dectin1-independent actions involving B beta glucans internalization. Thus, dietary B beta glucans inhibit leukocyte superoxide production and leukocyte, renal and aortic ADAM17- and nSMase2 gene expression attenuating systemic inflammation in health, and renal injury and aortic calcification despite hyperphosphatemia in CKD
