L'arredo scultoreo paleocristiano e medievaledella basilica di S. Giovanni Maggiore a Napoli

    Get PDF
ENGLISH: Archaeological and historical-artistic studies on the basilica of S. Giovanni Maggiore began immediately after the discovery of the ruins of Early Christian worship building in 1870. Then the reconstruction of the church brought to light the apse, the columns and the corbels of the triumphal arch of the basilica founded by the bishop of Naples Vincentius in the second half of the sixth century AD, as well as some elements of the Early Christian, Early Medieval and Romanic marble decoration. Since then the artefacts have been repeatedly mentioned, but never analysed in detail, by the scholars that studied the basilica and the Marble Calendar discovered there in 1742, here I examine the materials as a whole in a systematic way, focusing also on those disappeared, but documented by old photos, and presenting a slab remained unpublished until now. This work is part of a study project started ten years ago with the stratigraphic analysis of the Early Christian apse of the basilica and then continued with the examination of the sources and the re-reading of the old excavations and restorations. As I have already experimented in other contexts in Campania and Naples itself, this method is a valid prerequisite for the resumption of studies on the church of S. Giovanni Maggiore

    Get PDF
ENGLISH: This article analyses two wills drawn up by Manuele Zaccaria, scion of a powerful family of merchants, and brother of Benedetto, in the late thirteenth century. Manuele dictated his first will in April 1271, a few days after promising his daughter in marriage to the son of Oberto Spinola, the newly-elected capitano del popolo. This first document reflects Manuele’s need to protect his wealth in view of this marriage alliance. The second will, drawn up more than twenty years later, is telling of Manuele’s religious inclinations and his concern for saving his soul.
