ENGLISH: These concluding remarks are devoted to the identification of some keywords – the networks, the town, the sources – and some general historiographical issues that can stimulate a cross-cutting reading of the essays collected in this volume

Information Technologies for Medieval Studies: Some Recent Experiences in Italy

    Get PDF
ENGLISH: The article highlights the relations between Italian medieval studies and digital humanities, starting from researches conducted on Vatican documents and other ecclesiastical sources since the 1980s; then it goes on to discuss some more recent projects, based on various types of sources. A multi-faceted debate emerges, in which the experiences of historians and editors of medieval sources are intertwined with those of archivists and librarians, to face the incessant transformation of Information Technology, from the first “Read-Only” Web to the Web 2.0, from the Semantic Web to the challenges posed to historians by research data and Linked Open Data technologies.

ENGLISH: Since the end of the 19th century, the letters from the Papal Chancery have been edited by the École française de Rome. In 2002, they benefitted from a digital edition published by Brepols in Europe, the United States, and Asia. Researchers residing in Germany, France, and Italy are the most frequent users of this site. Such a publication, which is comparable to the work of the Repertorium Germanicum, offers new possibilities for researchers. The completion of the Fasti Ecclesiae Gallicanae is an example of a composite work partly realised thanks to digital editions

Das Repertorium Germanicum und die hybride Edition des Liv-, Est- und Kurländischen Urkundenbuchs

ENGLISH: The Liv-, Est- und Kurländische Urkundenbuch (LUB) is a basic collection of sources for researchers of medieval Livonia. It was Georg Friedrich von Bunge who began working on the edition in the first half of the nineteenth century; the Freie Universität Berlin is currently promoting an initiative to close the gap between series I and II of the LUB. The Repertorium Germanicum is of great importance as it facilitates an efficient research for relevant sources in the Vatican Archives. The LUB is to be published as a hybrid edition (in print as well as digital).

Female monasticism in Italy in the Early Middle Ages: new questions, new debates

    Get PDF
ENGLISH: This introductory essay consists of two parts. The first is a contextualisation of the overall purpose of the monographic section, as well as a general summary of the questions, issues and themes which we were proposing to debate. The second part is an Appendix, which sets out the guidelines of the database MedItaNunC, which supported some of the research, and now provides not only a large percentage of the source material, but also a methodology about the connections which can be made through the information brought together. The essay looks at the historiography of the subject, including the recent wealth of research published from the perspective of gender studies in this area, and the way in which the Italian material fits into it. It also explains the chosen chronology, and the geographical spread used in the volume, and the important input of archaeology, which has helped propose new questions. Lastly, it sets out the three core themes which run through the other papers in the volume: the links between female monasteries and the city elites, the history of the monasteries concerned in the light of both their foundation and hagiographical myths, their material culture, and their ideological place in the cityscape, and finally, the attempt to identify the difference, if any, between female and male monastic houses. It is hoped that the collection will provide a first panorama of female monasticism across the multiplicity of Italian political and cultural landscape.

ENGLISH: Italian scholarship has already underscored the similarities between the royal foundation of St. Salvatore of Brescia and St. Sofia of Benevento, founded by Arechis, duke of Benevento, before 774. However, St. Sofia is still considered not only as a family foundation but also as the “Lombards’ national sanctuary” in Southern Italy. Taking into account Arechis’ political project and strategies of representation of his public authority, this study aims to reconsider both the family dimension and the political and religious role of St. Sofia in Lombard Southern Italy. During the first half of the ninth century, the role of the monastery changed as a consequence of the political, social and devotional transformations that were taking place in Benevento. The last part of this study, therefore, focuses on the role of St. Sofia and the monastery’s relationship with the princes after the end of Arechis’ dynasty

Comparison Between Analytic Derivative and the Technique of Differential Contributions in Reflectarray Phase-Only Synthesis

    No full text
Many algorithms for the optimization of array antennas need the calculation of a gradient to minimize a cost function. Usually, the best approach is to compute analytically the derivatives, since that way computations are faster. However, sometimes the derivatives are cumbersome to obtain or they cannot be calculated, such as when directly optimizing the layout in reflectarrays for cross-polarization improvement. In those cases, derivatives are evaluated using numerical techniques such as finite differences. In this work, we present the numerical technique of differential contributions (DFC) to accelerate gradient-based algorithms when the derivatives are calculated with finite differences, achieving a complexity time scaling of the same order as the analytical derivatives. The technique is applied to a far field phase-only synthesis for reflectarray antennas using the generalized Intersection Approach, and it is compared with the analytic derivatives and the use of finite differences with the FFT. The DFC technique shows superior performance in all cases, even than the analytic derivative. This work was supported in part by the European Space Agency (ESA) under contract ESTEC/AO/1-7064/12/NL/MH; by the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades under project TEC2017-86619-R (ARTEINE); by the Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad under project TEC2016-75103-C2-1-R (MYRADA); and by the Gobierno del Principado de Asturias through Programa "Clarín" de Ayudas Postdoctorales / Marie Curie-Cofund under project ACA17-09.13th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation (EuCAP
