In Vitro anti-collagenase activity and total phenolic content of five selected herbs: a review

    No full text
Etlingera elatior, Persicaria odorata, Centella asiatica, Senna alata and Phyllanthus emblica were reviewed for their in vitro anti-collagenase activity and its total phenolic contents. Plant herbs play a vital role to promote the production of collagen which is the component of the skin. Different solvents during plant extraction and various plant parts were used to determine anti-collagenase properties and total phenolic content. Generally, anti-collagenase assay and Folin-Ciocalteu method were used to determine the anti-collagenase activity and total phenolic content, respectively. The extracts of these herbs have the potential of inhibiting collagenase activity and they possess total phenolic content. The total phenolic was found to be important elements in collagenase inhibition activity other than flavonoid. The selected herbs are popular in Malaysia and this review can be a useful reference or information for future application in pharmaceutical, food and cosmetics fields

Functional bignay ciders inhibit key enzymes linked to obesity and diabetes for metabolic syndrome protection

    No full text
Metabolic syndrome has become one of the major health issues worldwide. Cider beverages have several functional properties for health, such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antidiabetic effects. In this study, we formulated cider beverages from bignay fruits (Antidesma bunius), identified their compounds, and evaluated their functional effects for metabolic syndrome protection. Ciders were produced from the aqueous extract of bignay fruit powder, fermented using Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Acetobacter xylinum for 3, 7, and 14 days. Compound identification in bignay ciders was done using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Antioxidant activity was done by the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl assay, while enzymatic inhibitory assays were tested against lipase, ?-glucosidase, ?-amylase, and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE). GC/MS profiling showed that most bignay ciders contained major organic acids and amino acids. All ciders exerted high antioxidant activity (>60%). Bignay ciders fermented from A. xylinum demonstrated significant inhibition (>90%) against lipase and ?-glucosidase activities. However, ciders had no functional effect on ?-amylase and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibition. These data suggest that bignay ciders may have potential as functional beverages with antioxidant, antiobesity, and antidiabetic effects for management of metabolic syndrome

Who delivers it and how it is delivered: effects of social-emotional learning interventions on learning anxiety and dropout intention

    No full text
Purpose - Given the prevalence of mental health issues among young adolescents and its detrimental effects on academic functioning, SocialEmotional Learning (SEL) interventions are becoming extremely valuable. The current study aims to investigate the effectiveness of two types of SEL interventions delivered by two different types of teachers to determine their effectiveness for SEL knowledge, learning anxiety, and intention to drop-out. Methodology - This study employed a 2 x 2 factorial and between-subject quasi-experimental design, in which intervention type and teacher type were manipulated to produce four different versions of experiments. A total of 209 students (107 boys, 102 girls) from Grade 8 with a mean age of 14.3 years from Qinzhou City in Southwest China participated in the studyFindings - Factorial and between-group MANOVA revealed that while psychology teacher was more effective in enhancing SEL knowledge and reducing dropout intention, regular teacher was more effective in reducing learning anxiety. TASSEL intervention was more effective in enhancing SEL knowledge while SEL regular intervention was more effective in reducing learning anxiety. Nevertheless, within-group analysis suggested TASSEL with psychology teacher was the best combination in reducing dropout intention while SEL with psychological teacher was the best combination in reducing learning anxiety. Significance - The results have significance for schools and mental health counselling services. The findings can guide the effective design of SEL intervention and appropriate teachers to deliver it

Faktor mempengaruhi penglibatan belia dalam sektor perladangan Kelapa Sawit

    No full text

Investment decision making towards investing in Islamic unit trusts amongst women

    No full text
The differences in skill expectations and knowledge are amongst factors that contribute to the variances when men and women choose financial products. Women are claimed to be risk averse, somewhat insecure, lacking self-confidence and interest in financial investment products. Nevertheless, the evolving working and educational environment has changed this stereotype, wherein women are increasingly more educated, knowledgeable, and are more exposed to investments. Gender equality between men and women in terms of the volume of investments has turned into a requirement that boosts economic growth with people being the most important factor to contribute through investing habit. This cannot be realised if only men are involved in investment. Financial institutions aim certain figures of targeted investment volume each year. As such, this study identified the factors of women investments, particularly in Islamic unit trusts.A total of 201 respondents were selected via the convenience sampling technique. The Likert scale questionnaires were analysed using SMART PLS software. As a result, several investment behaviours, including investment objectives, return expectations, awareness, and risk attitude, emerged as factors that influenced women investors to choose unit trusts. The study outcomes are beneficial in devising effective strategies that may attract women to invest in Islamic unit trust. Besides, certain agencies should conduct campaigns or seminars on financial literacy for this potential sector, so as to enhance their knowledge in investing in Islamic unit trusts
