    The role of Malay Traditional House and Rumah Gadang as homestays

    In both Malaysia and Indonesia, traditional houses have been used as homestays, as a new type of rural tourism accommodation. This study aims to compare the implementation of rural tourism in Malaysia and Indonesia, to reveal the usage of traditional Malay house and Rumah Gadang as homestays in both countries, and to promote homestay as an alternative for rural tourism commodation. Experiences on participating in both homestays in Kampung Lonek Homestay, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia and Nagari Sumpur, West Sumatra, both majorly populated by the Minang community, are shared and analyzed to achieve these aims

    Kampong, land and its capacity towards subsistence living

    Kampong is a land that compound by conclusive territory and accommodating people\u27s lives and well-being. As there is anecdotal evidence that people are returning to reoccupying houses and working with the landthis study investigates the land and its capacity for these returnees. The main intention is to identify apparent evidence that land in kampong is accessible and available to be reutilized again. The study presents descriptive information about the attended, productive, and unattended land through site observation and fieldwork measurements. The findings illustrate the capacity of the land to absorb the returnees and allow future subsistence that feeds the demand for food, goods and jobs

    Ilmu Qiraat dilihat sudah mula berkembang pada masa kini lebih-lebih lagi terdapat pusat pengajian yang menawarkan program pengajian yang berkaitan dengannya. Namun begitu, tahap penguasaan pengajiannya masih kurang dikaji dengan sewajarnya. Oleh yang demikian, kajian ini dijalankan untuk menganalisis faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi penguasaan pengajian Ilmu Qiraat di Kolej Islam Antarabangsa Sultan Ismail Petra (KIAS). Kajian ini adalah kajian rintis yang berbentuk kuantitatif yang menggunakan set soal selidik sebagai instrumen untuk mendapatkan data dan SPSS 21.0 digunakan untuk menganalisis data. Sampel seramai 30 orang responden telah dipilih dengan menggunakan kaedah persampelan bertujuan (purposive sampling) dalam kalangan pelajar-pelajar yang mengikuti program Diploma Qiraat dan Taranum di Kolej Islam Antarabangsa Sultan Ismail Petra (KIAS) dari tahun 2018 hingga 2020. Sebanyak 15 item yang merangkumi teori dan amali dikemukan dalam soal selidik tersebut. Kajian mendapati tahap penguasaan pelajar-pelajar berkaitan pengajian ilmu Qiraat berada pada tahap sederhana. Hal ini disokong dengan data yang diperolehi dari teori dan amali. Oleh yang demikian, faktor peningkatan proses pengajaran dan pembelajaran secara teori dan amali seharusnya ditambahbaik dan ditingkatkan agar penguasaan pengajaran ilmu Qiraat dalam kalangan pelajar dapat ditingkatkan ke tahap yang lebih baik

    Development of Mathematics Reading Assessment: Psychometric Evaluation Based on SEM and IRT

    The purpose of this study is to evaluate the psychometric properties of mathematics reading assessment based on structural equation model (SEM) and item response theory (IRT). The mathematics reading assessment is conducted in the form of text-reading related to real-life probability and statistics issues. The sample is 789 sixth graders from 13 primary schools in Taiwan. The latent construct of mathematics reading includes three factors which are based on the content area reading components provided by M. C. McKenna and R. D. Robinson. These three factors of mathematics reading assessment in this study are general reading comprehension, prior knowledge of mathematics, and mathematics-specific skills respectively. Firstly, the researcher develops the mathematics reading assessment and confirms the item difficulties, item discriminations, and reliability of assessment. A structural equation model (SEM) is adopted to test the factor construct of the mathematics reading assessment. According to the analysis, it shows that the item difficulties, item discriminations, and reliability are very well. The structural equation model reveals there exist three factors that conform to the assumption of content area reading components mentioned above. Secondly, this study calibrates item characteristics by the three-parameter logistic model of item response theory (IRT). Results indicate that all item fitness performs well. Items belonging to prior knowledge of mathematics have the highest item discriminations. Items of mathematics-specific skills have the highest item difficulties. This study establishes a well-structured mathematics reading assessment. Results could also provide references for instruction and assessment of mathematics reading. Finally, based on the findings of this study, some recommendations and suggestions for future researches and methodologies are also discussed

    Benefits and side effects of energy drink consumption among university students

    Recently, energy drinks are becoming a popular beverage among youths, especially students in tertiary education. It claims to provide many benefits for students such as increased energy and wakefulness. This study was carried out to determine the prevalence, types, benefits, and side effects of energy drink consumption among university students. This cross-sectional study was carried out in Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Puncak Alam Campus, Selangor from April 2019 to July 2020. Students who participated using convenience sampling (n=376) were asked to complete a set of self-administered questionnaires. Data were analysed using IBM-SPSS Statistics (Version 25) to determine the prevalence of energy drinks consumption. A Chi-square test was also used to determine the association between energy drink consumption and gender. Out of 380 respondents, 217 (57.1%) students consumed energy drinks of which 93 (42.9%) were males and 124 (57.1%) were females. For the types of energy drinks, male students significantly consumed more Red Bull and Gatorade compared to females at 68 (53.1%) and 39 (53.4%) respectively (p<0.05). Also, male students reported that energy drinks were effective in improving physical performance (n = 55, 51.4%), increased stamina in exercise or sports (n = 47, 52.8%), increased reaction rate (n = 30, 56.6%) and improved driving (24, 66.7%) (p<0.05). In contrast, females (n = 80, 52.3%) perceived that the drinks were able to improve energy (p<0.05). However, no statistically significant association was found between males and females for the side effects of energy drink consumption (p>0.05). In conclusion, a majority of university students in Selangor consumed energy drinks. Most male students also believed that it is beneficial with few side effects

    Fonologi dan leksikal bahasa orang asli Che Wong

    Masyarakat orang asli di Malaysia terbahagi kepada tiga kelompok utama, iaitu senoi, negrito dan Melayu Proto. suku orang asli Che Wong tergolong dalam kelompok orang asli senoi. sebahagian besar masyarakat orang asli Che Wong tinggal di Pahang terutamanya di perkampungan sungai Enggang Kuala Gandah Pahang. Berdasarkan pemerhatian terdapat pengaruh bahasa Melayu dalam bahasa natif orang asli Che Wong kerana wujudnya dominasi bahasa utama, iaitu bahasa Melayu dalam proses komunikasi masyarakat orang asli Che Wong. Kajian ini memfokuskan aspek bahasa Che Wong yang digunakan sebagai alat komunikasi di Kampung sungai Enggang Kuala Gandah, Pahang. informan dalam kajian ini terdiri daripada penutur natif suku Che Wong. Tujuan kajian ini adalah untuk menghuraikan aspek fonologi dan leksikal bahasa suku orang Asli Che Wong dengan menggunakan pendekatan linguistik struktural. Pengkaji menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif untuk menganalisis data yang diperoleh melalui teknik rakaman dan lafaz. Pentranskripsian dilakukan menggunakan Symbol International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) bersumberkan data kosa kata bahasa Che Wong berdasarkan senarai swadesh dan kelas kata bertema. Berasaskan kajian, didapati bahawa bahasa Che Wong mempunyai lapan fonem vokal dan 20 fonem konsonan. Berdasarkan leksikal bertema pula pengkaji mendapati terdapat perbezaan dan persamaan antara bahasa Che Wong dengan bahasa Melayu. Dalam kosa kata bertema kategori peralatan rumah khususnya terdapat persamaan penggunaan kosa kata antara bahasa Che Wong dengan bahasa Melayu. namun begitu, secara keseluruhan penggunaan kosa kata banyak mengekalkan bahasa Che Wong sendiri. Kajian terhadap bahasa orang asli suku Che Wong yang meliputi aspek fonologi dan leksikal dilakukan agar struktur bahasa ini didokumentasikan secara terperinci, dan memastikan kelangsungan bahasa ini agar tidak pupus ditelan zaman
