A study on the effects of sawdust acidity on the growth and production of brown oyster mushroom (Pleurotus cystidiosus O.K. Miller) was conducted from May to August 2012 in the Laboratory of Microbiology, Department of Biology, Faculty of Sciences, Andalas University, Padang. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of acidity (pH) of sawdust media to the growth and production of the mushrooms. This study used experimental method by Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with five pH level of treatments from 4 to 8 and five replication for each pH. The results of the study showed that pH 8 gave the best growth with vegetative growth periods was 21 days, weight of the fruiting bodies was 32,60 g, and diameter of the fruiting bodies was 7,06 cm.Keywords : acidity, growth and production, Pleurotus cystidiosus, sawdust
Variasi Morfometri Papilio polytes L. (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae) di Beberapa Lokasi di Sumatera Barat
The research on morphometry variation of Papilio polytes L. (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae) was conducted on December 2011 until April 2012 in West Sumatera (Padang Panjang, Padang and Marak Island). Papilio polytes were directly collected from the field and morphological measurement was conducted in Genetic Laboratory, Biology Department, Andalas University Padang. The morphological characters were significantly different among males. Those characters were forewings length, hindwings length, antenna length, eyes distance, foreleg length and wing venations. While differentiation also found among females. Those characters were forewings length, hindwings width, foreleg length and wing venations. There was a high of female morphological differentiation between Padang - Marak island and Padang Panjang – Marak Island. Male individual had low variation between that places. Keywords: variation, morphometry, Papilio polytes, West Sumatr
Jenis-Jenis Ektoparasit pada Mamalia Kecil yang ditemukan di Pasar Raya Padang, Sumatera Barat
A study about ectoparasites on the small mammals at Pasar Raya Padang, West Sumatera was conducted from November 2012 to January 2013. The purpose of this study was to know the species variety of ectoparasites on the small mammals. Present study used purpossive sampling method. The results showed that, two classes (Arachnida and Insecta), two orders (Acarina and Siphonaptera), three families (Sarcoptidae, Laelapidae and Pulicidae), and four species of ectoparasites (Echinolaelaps echidninus, Laelaps nuttalli, Sarcoptes scabiei and Xenopsylla cheopis) were found on two small mammal species (Rattus tanezumi and Suncus murinus). The highest number of individuals of ectoparasites was Echinolaelaps echidninus (46 individuals) and the lowest one was Sarcoptes scabiei (9 individuals)
Analisis Histologis Ginjal Ikan Asang (Osteochilus hasseltii ) di Danau Maninjau dan Singkarak, Sumatera Barat
A study on kidney histology of Silver Sharkminnow (Osteochilus hassletii) sampled from Maninjau and Singkarak Lakes, West Sumatra has been done from December 2012 to April 2013 at Animal Structure and Development Laboratory, Department of Biology, Andalas University, Padang. Direct observation and purposive sampling were conducted at four locations around Singkarak Lake (Sumani, Paninggahan, Sumpur, Ombilin) and one location in Maninjau Lake (Tanjung Sani). Histological samples of kidneys were isolated, fixated, dehydrated and embedded on paraffin and stained using Haematoxylin-Eosin. The results showed some histological alterations of kidney samples from all locations. Those alteration varied from cell hypertrophy, lysis, necrosis and emerging of scrape tissues. There were no significant differences on the degree of alteration among all populations. Those result indicated that both lakes had been experienced organic pollutions. Keywords: Silver Sharkminnow (Osteochilus hasseltii C.V), Histopatology, Kidney, Singkarak Lake, Maninjau Lake
Analisis Vegetasi Dasar di Bawah Tegakan Jati Emas (Tectona grandis L.) dan Jati Putih (Gmelina arborea Roxb.) di Kampus Universitas Andalas
The analysis of understory vegetation on Jati Emas (Tectona grandis L.) and Jati Putih (Gmelina arborea Roxb.) stand in Andalas University campus was conducted from May until July 2012. The objectives of this research were: to determine species composition, structure and diversity index of species. The method of this research was quadratic method with line 1 m x 1 m. The results were found 22 families, 43 species and 624 individuals. The highest importance value was dominated by Gleichenia linearis (29.7%) at Jati Emas Stand and Melastoma malabathricum (38.19%) at Jati Putih Stand. Diversity index (H’) had value were 2.88, 2.81, 2.46 and it’s categorizhed as middle diversity. The higher simillarity index was found between Jati Emas and Jati Putih stand (40.74%), next between Jati Emas and without Jati stand (24%) was found as middle simillarity index and the lower similliarity index was found between Jati Putih and without Jati stand (13.04%).Keywords: Understory, Tectona grandis, Gmelina arbore
Penapisan Bakteri Termo-Amilolitik Dari Sumber Air Panas Sungai Medang, Kerinci, Jambi
This study aimed to observe the ability of isolated bacteria from Sungai Medang hot spring in producing amylase and to determine the activity and characteristic of isolated amylolytic bacteria which gave the highest amylolytic index. The water samples were collectied by using purposive sampling based on different level of temperatures. This study has successfully collected 48 bacterial isolated from the hot spring. To find the highest amylolytic activity, we tested ten isolated bacteria which have high amylolytic indices. We found that MV2.7 isolated from 740C of hot spring gave the highest amylolytic activity. The isolated bacteria was positive proteolytic, cellulolytic and negative lipolytic. The isolated bacteria showed higher and more spesific activity on rice starch rather than corn and sago starchKeywords: Screening, thermophilic, amylolytic, activit
Analisis Morfologi Ikan Puntius binotatus Valenciennes 1842 (Pisces: Cyprinidae) dari beberapa Lokasi di Sumatera Barat
The morphological analysis of Puntius binotatus Valenciennes 1842 (Pisces: Cyprinidae) collected from several locations in West Sumatra has been conducted from April to June 2012. Several morphological characters were measured and analyzed using principal component analysis (PCA) and UPGMA. This study found significant morphological variations of the standard length (SL), head length (HL), least depth of caudal peduncle (HCPD), length of caudal peduncle (LCPD), eye diameter (ED), caudal fin length (CFL), caudal fin length up (CFL up), caudal fin length bottom (CFL bottom), length of maxillary barbels (LMB) and length of snout barbels (LSB). Those variations were more likely influenced by elevations and western-eastern side of Barisan Mountain in Sumatra. Keywords: Barisan Mountain, cyprinidae, morphological characters, P. binotatu
